Investing in My Yandare Villainess Fiancée:Each Reward Fuels My Growth

Chapter 89: Investment 89: The New Rival

Kael Vantressor, as it turned out, had been placed directly into three of Elliot’s second-year classes—a coincidence that struck Elliot as considerably too convenient to actually be one.

"Advanced Spellcraft Theory," Seria muttered, scanning the schedule posted outside their first class of the day. "Combat Applications. Environmental Mana Studies. All three of your electives, exactly matched."

"Maybe he’s just talented in the same areas I am," Elliot offered, though even he didn’t sound convinced.

"Or someone made sure he’d be positioned to watch you constantly," Seria said flatly. "I know which explanation I find more plausible."

They found Kael already seated in Advanced Spellcraft Theory when they entered, occupying a desk with the kind of casual confidence that suggested he’d already mapped every exit, every classmate’s approximate combat capability, and probably the professor’s teaching patterns within the first five minutes of arriving.

"Elliot Reingard." Kael’s dark eyes tracked them as they entered, a faint, assessing smile curving his lips. "And Seria Ale Migalison. I was hoping our paths would cross properly before the day was through."

"You know our names," Elliot said carefully, taking the seat beside him with deliberate calm despite Seria’s visible tension at his shoulder.

"Everyone at Adonite knows your names, at this point," Kael said. "The students who survived a dungeon expedition that killed fifteen of their classmates and somehow walked away having personally slain a Bug Lord tend to become somewhat notable figures."

"You heard about that from your previous academy?" Seria asked, taking the seat on Elliot’s other side, ice-blue eyes narrowed with barely veiled suspicion.

"Word travels," Kael said simply, offering no further elaboration.

The professor’s arrival interrupted further conversation, and the class settled into the familiar rhythm of lecture and note-taking, though Elliot found himself repeatedly, distractedly aware of Kael’s presence beside him—not overtly threatening, but watchful in a way that set every one of his hard-won instincts on edge.

It was during the class’s practical portion, when students paired off to practice basic mana-shaping exercises, that Elliot finally got his first real glimpse of exactly what Kael Vantressor was capable of.

"Care to spar properly?" Kael asked, once the professor had moved on to observe other pairs. "I find these basic exercises rather beneath both our skill levels, don’t you?"

Elliot hesitated, glancing toward Seria, who gave the barest of nods—watchful, ready to intervene, but clearly as curious as he was to see this stranger’s actual capabilities firsthand.

"Sure," Elliot said. "Nothing lethal."

"Wouldn’t dream of it," Kael said, already stepping back to create proper distance, a faint smile playing at his lips. "Merely a friendly demonstration."

The exchange that followed left Elliot’s breath caught somewhere in his throat. Kael moved with a precision and economy of motion that rivaled even Rose’s disciplined swordwork, his spells forming and releasing with a speed that suggested years of formal, rigorous training well beyond what any typical second-year should possess.

Elliot’s ward flared automatically twice during the brief spar, deflecting strikes that would have otherwise landed cleanly, and by the exercise’s end, both combatants stood breathing hard, the rest of the classroom having paused entirely to watch.

"Impressive," Kael said, genuine respect coloring his voice for the first time. "That defensive barrier—I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Some kind of unique inherited technique?"

"Something like that," Elliot said carefully, unwilling to reveal more than necessary.

"Fair enough." Kael’s expression turned thoughtful, calculating. "I imagine a family capable of producing techniques like that has interesting stories behind it."

"Everyone’s family has interesting stories," Seria cut in smoothly, stepping closer with deliberate, protective intent. "Yours included, I’d imagine, given how quickly Adonite’s administration seems to have fast-tracked your transfer."

Something flickered behind Kael’s dark eyes—amusement, perhaps, or a flicker of genuine surprise at being so directly challenged.

"Sharp," he said, sounding almost pleased. "I did hear the Ice Queen’s reputation preceded her. Rest assured, Lady Migalison, my transfer was entirely above board. My family has simply maintained a longstanding relationship with several members of Adonite’s board."

"Which family, exactly?" Elliot pressed.

Kael’s smile widened, revealing nothing.

"House Vantressor," he said simply, as though the name should carry obvious significance. When neither Elliot nor Seria showed any recognition, something almost like disappointment flickered across his expression. "Ah. A minor house, admittedly, outside the capital’s immediate political circles. I imagine that’s precisely why the headmaster considered it discreet enough for what he had in mind."

"Which was?" Seria pressed.

The bell signaling the class’s end rang before Kael could answer, and he simply gathered his belongings with unhurried grace, offering a final, unreadable smile.

"Perhaps that’s a conversation for another day," he said. "I do hope we’ll have the opportunity to speak further, Elliot. I suspect you and I have considerably more in common than either of us currently realizes."

He left without waiting for a response, disappearing into the crowded hallway beyond, leaving Elliot and Seria standing amid the classroom’s slowly dispersing students, unease settling heavy and unresolved between them.

"I don’t like him," Seria said flatly.

"I don’t trust him," Elliot corrected. "There’s a difference. And I think, whatever he’s actually here for, we’re going to find out sooner rather than later."

"House Vantressor," Seria murmured, testing the name aloud as though hoping repetition might jog some buried memory. "I don’t recognize it either. And I’ve studied the noble registries fairly extensively, given my own family’s standing."

"Maybe it really is as minor as he claimed."

"Or maybe," Seria said, "it’s minor enough that nobody’s bothered digging into it properly, which would make it the perfect cover for exactly the kind of quiet, discreet arrangement he described."

Elliot considered that, the unease in his chest deepening further. "You think the headmaster placed him here deliberately. The same way he placed Jin."

"I think," Seria said slowly, "that a boy who moves like a trained soldier, spars like he’s been doing it his entire life, and gets fast-tracked into your exact three electives, doesn’t happen to Adonite Academy by coincidence. Not this term, of all terms."

They gathered their own belongings in thoughtful silence, the classroom emptying steadily around them.

"I’ll ask Jin," Elliot said finally, as they made their way toward the door. "If anyone knows what the headmaster’s actually planning, it’s him."

"Good," Seria said. "Because I intend to keep a very close eye on Kael Vantressor regardless of what answer we get."
