The Reading Must Survive
The first line appeared before Gauss lifted his hand from the container.
Leo turned his eyes away before the rest could form.
“Wait.”
Gauss withdrew his hand. The seals remained intact.
“Can we go over the test first?” Leo said. “What can this prove?”
Gauss rested both hands at his sides. “I want you to identify the function of whatever is inside without opening the container. The laboratory will compare your answer with a stored functional profile. It will not expose the preserved measurement.”
“And if it reacts to me?”
“While the seals remain intact, no physical effect has been recorded. It may affect the way you perceive it. I cannot promise more than the records support.”
No recorded physical effect. In Meridian, that was not the same as safe, but it was more warning than most doors had given him.
“What if the container changes?”
“We stop and move it away from you.”
“All right. Let's try it.”
Leo looked back at the black metal. The waiting lines completed themselves.

Leo read it twice. The container remained a dark metal block with intact seals and no visible display. Whatever it had been built to protect, it had outlived the person expected to read it.
“Well?” Gauss asked.
“It keeps one measurement from changing until the assigned reviewer acknowledges it.” Leo kept his eyes on the container. “The original result. Not what anyone thought it meant, and not whether the result was correct. If you open this, the protection ends.”
Gauss kept his hands clear of the seals.
“Which measurement?”
“It doesn't say.”
That answer bothered Leo more than the rest. A number could remain exact for years and still become useless if nobody remembered what had been measured. Its unit, subject and intended reader were gone. Leo had delivered unlabeled parcels with more useful paperwork.
Gauss entered a command on the table. A narrow status panel lit along one edge of the container.
FUNCTIONAL MATCH: CONFIRMED.
AUTHORIZED ACKNOWLEDGMENT: PENDING.
The seal stayed closed. No measurement appeared.
“Did it match?” Leo asked.
“Exactly. I knew what the container was supposed to retain. I did not know what you would perceive through it.”
“Now we both know,” Leo said.
Gauss placed a small recorder on the table. Its indicator turned white. The screen copied Leo's answer, the sealed state and the result of the comparison. A fourth field remained empty.
IDENTIFICATION METHOD: NOT PROVIDED
“How did you identify it?” Gauss asked.
Leo remembered the commander's expression after every failed explanation, the same blank frustration returning as soon as Leo stopped speaking. A machine could keep his words. That did not mean a person could keep their meaning.
“I wish I could explain it. I don't know how to make the explanation stay clear.”
Gauss watched him for a moment, then ended the recording without pressing. The empty field stayed empty.
“But the result stays?” Leo asked.
Gauss indicated the confirmed match on the container. “The result can be tested without knowing your method.”
Leo nodded at the container. “Is this what you meant when you said anomalies could help you remember?”
“It is one example,” Gauss said. “This one preserves a measurement, not a person's understanding.”
Gauss reattached the container to the upper position on his back rack. Three others waited beneath it, just as sealed and just as unknown.
“You passed the test,” he said.
Leo glanced from the confirmed match to the recorder's empty field. “Good. Around here, that usually means a door opens into something worse.”
“Not this time,” Gauss said. “This one leads to the equipment bay. Come with me.”
The equipment bay opened off the same main corridor. Across from it, another door led to a small room with a bed and an attached washroom. Farther down, the deeper laboratory panels remained closed.
Leo noticed the bed first. Only then did he check for a second exit. Meridian had taught him that much. Apparently even good news here needed a drawback.
Inside the equipment bay, a gray exoskeleton stood open on a support frame. A rifle, a heavier short-barreled weapon and a broad-backed knife rested in separate wall clamps. Cases of ammunition occupied the lowest shelf.
Gauss walked past all of them and picked up a compact sensor pack.
“I expected you to start with the guns,” Leo said.
“A gun is most useful after you know where you are.”
“I was hoping it could solve both problems.”
“If you find one that can, bring it back.”
Gauss closed the sensor pack around Leo's forearm. A wrist-sized display unfolded above it. Six flat marker beacons sat in a charging strip beside them.

“A route detector?” Leo asked.
“A route-seam detector. It finds carriers and local contradictions in space. It does not create a break, choose a destination or keep a passage open.”
“So it tells me a door is wrong.”
“If the disagreement lasts long enough to measure.”
“Does it tell me where the wrong door leads?”
“No.”
Leo lifted one marker from the charging strip. The display labeled it MARKER 1: UNASSIGNED.
“This holds one side of a route?”
“It records where you placed it and lets the detector recognize the same measured side again. It cannot hold a break or pull you back through one.”
Leo returned the marker. A breadcrumb that could confirm the floor under his shoe, not the way home. There were six of them.
The display showed a simple plan of the laboratory's open section. The entry gallery, medical bay, operations room, equipment bay and guest quarters all sat where Leo remembered them. A green line marked the protected boundary. Beyond the short test bay, a closed field-service lock ended the map.
In one corner, FILTERED glowed in small letters.
“Filtered against what?” Leo asked.
“The surviving physical plan and readings that remain consistent over time. Raw mode keeps contradictions the system would normally classify as noise.”

“Yes.”
Leo turned the detector in his hand. “That seems like an unfortunate place to hide contradictions.”
“It is also an unfortunate place to follow every bad reading through a door.”
Leo's thumb stayed over RAW, then moved away. Following every bad reading was how people ended up in corridors that did not return them. He still wanted to know what the filter removed before he relied on it.
Leo released the detector's clasp and returned it to the bench. Gauss moved to the exoskeleton. It was less complete than his own suit: dull gray plates over a black support frame, thinner protection around the joints and no rack for containers. Narrow collector lines ran along the spine and limbs. The helmet remained raised above the collar.
“Standard professional field model,” Gauss said. “It assists movement and load, filters part of the corruption entering through the environment, and provides ordinary armor. Inside Meridian, functioning collectors keep it powered.”
Leo looked through the open back of the suit. Contact pads followed the spine and ribs. A maintenance display listed the measurements it expected from its wearer.
Pulse. Breathing. Tremor. Gait. Balance correction. Reaction delay.
At the bottom, REMOTE ARCHIVE: ACTIVE waited beside an empty user field.
“Who gets the archive?”
“The laboratory. I review it after each deployment.”
“So you see all of this afterward.”
“Yes.”
Leo looked at the opaque visor of Gauss's helmet. “Can the recording be disabled?”
“The same sensors keep the frame from moving against your body. The suit will not provide field assistance without them, and its safety record is copied automatically when it reconnects to the laboratory.”
Leo read the list again. The sensors could not see his thoughts. They would know when his hands shook, when his balance failed and when a door made him hesitate.
“Without the archive, no assistance.”
“Correct.”
Leo left his hand on the frame. It was still armor.
Gauss touched the suit's status panel. A calibration notice appeared.
“Your current strength exceeds the model's ordinary profile,” he said. “We will spend two days adjusting the assistance and teaching you how to move in it. If the frame adds force at the wrong point, it can turn a stumble into an injury.”
Leo had doubled what his body could do because the alternative had been remaining helpless. Now the suit needed adjustment and he needed practice before either could safely keep up with the other. It would record every hesitation. Embarrassing, perhaps. Less permanent than dying.
“Two days,” Leo said. “That's enough?”
“For a safe fit. We will not use field routes during calibration.”
“Better than learning while something is chasing me.”
“Things that chase people make poor instructors.”
Gauss entered the two-day block into the laboratory schedule without bargaining. The field-service lock changed from AVAILABLE BY AUTHORIZATION to TRAINING HOLD.
The new rifle was unloaded when Leo removed it from the wall clamp. An empty hard case waited on the shelf beneath it. The basic firearm skill he had given himself made the safety and action familiar. The model's balance and recoil were still guesses. It was heavier than D-17's damaged weapon and built for use with an assisted frame. After checking the action, he returned it to the clamp.

The short-barreled weapon used thick six-round cassettes instead of magazines. Four sealed cassettes filled the fitted slots beneath it. When Leo touched the status catch, 24 FLECHETTE CARTRIDGES appeared beside an empty charge bar and a red thermal limit.
“Electromagnetic shotgun,” Gauss said. “The capacitor recharges from the suit or the local field.”
The cartridge count did not change. Neither did the heat limit.
Leo left it in the clamp. A weapon that promised close-range power was also a weapon that assumed the threat had already reached him. He could learn its weight tomorrow.
The knife was nearly long enough to deserve another name. Its reinforced spine and plain edge made its purpose clear: cutting, prying, and surviving impacts that would ruin the utility knife in Leo's pocket.
The fourth mark on his left arm remained still. He did not need to activate Technician's Frenzy to know the blade would carry a charged impact better than his hand.
A maintenance drawer held ordinary suit tools, a cleaning kit and replacement seals. Nothing there promised to save him. It only reduced the number of stupid failures that could kill him before an anomaly had to try.
Gauss watched him consider it and asked no question.

Gauss showed him the guest quarters last. The room held a bed, a narrow desk, clean clothes and a washroom. The inner door could be locked, though an emergency override remained connected to the laboratory.
“Can I lock it from inside?” Leo asked.
“Yes. I can override it during a medical or boundary emergency.”
Leo looked at the bed. “Anything else in here I should be afraid of?”
“The mattress is conventional,” Gauss said. “Its comfort is not guaranteed.”
“I think I can survive that.”
Leo returned to the equipment bay. The suit, detector and weapons waited in their frames. The kit would make the next trip less suicidal. When Leo returned, its records would show Gauss what had nearly gone wrong, giving both of them a chance to prevent it next time.
“I'll use the equipment,” he said. “Training first. If the detector finds a route, we inspect the reading before we make a plan.”
Gauss gave a small inclination of the helmet. “Agreed.”
Leo looked over the suit, the weapons and the ammunition Gauss had put aside for him. “This is more help than I expected to find in Meridian. Thank you.”
“You're welcome, Leo.”
For once, the next step came with time to prepare and someone willing to prepare him. The feeling that followed was unfamiliar enough that Leo needed a moment to recognize it as relief.
The route detector still lay on the bench. Leo picked it up, took the empty rifle case from the lower shelf and changed FILTERED to RAW.
Most of the clean map dissolved beneath pale interference. For a moment the device appeared to justify its own filter. Then one narrow reading steadied beside the field-service lock beyond the test bay.
SPATIAL MISMATCH: PERSISTENT

Gauss stepped closer. “It was not present on the last raw survey.”
Leo carried the detector and the empty case into the test bay, then set the case on the floor beside him. The service lock remained closed. Its status light showed a normal seal, and the wall plan placed an ordinary freight approach beyond it.
The raw carrier strengthened when Leo lifted the rifle case clear of the test-bay floor. It weakened when he set the case down in the same place.
Leo changed back to FILTERED. The entire change disappeared beneath TRANSIENT STRUCTURAL ERROR.
“What's on the other side?” Leo asked.
“The physical approach should be there,” Gauss said. “The mismatch has no confirmed destination.”
“Then the lock stays closed,” Leo said.
“For two days,” Gauss said.
“After two days, we measure it again.”
Gauss set a two-day timer on the lock.
Leo returned the detector to RAW and lifted the case once more. The carrier climbed at once and fell when he set the case down.
After he returned the detector and case to the equipment bay, the raw history still retained both identical rises. The filtered history showed neither.
The service lock had stayed closed. The mismatch beside it had answered the same weight twice.
