Chapter 26: The Chosen and Unchosen
After the selection, only a few notable people were chosen.
Enough that they could be counted on a single hand.
Leon, the radio operator that had good knowledge about the frequencies and was responsible for digging out the first broadcast about the Ohio base.
Toby, the slim and lanky guy with glasses. He always acted like a genius and turned out to be one in reality as well. He was a medical student and thus an obvious addition to the group.
Clara, the blonde cheerleader girl who had great gymnastic skills and also connections with higher ups in the real world outside. It may come very useful in the Ohio base, so she was welcomed with open arms.
Tom, Dickens and Harry, the three engineers who had different specializations but would be indisposable at the time of finding vehicles outside and operating different machines.
Charlie, the buff teenager who was already pre selected due to his strength.
And finally, Sarah and Olivia, two young women who were selected on the basis of their cooking skills as well as their proclaimed household chores that they could do most of them.
In nicer terms, they were chosen as maids and yet, they felt glad about it.
One look at the remaining people, and they knew that they would rather leave with the awakeners than stay behind with these... savages.
Fortunately, every woman in the shelter had been selected.
Naomi, Andrea, Rhea were with Fredrinn. Sarah, Olivia and Clara with Jacob and Christine had already gotten together with Max.
All that were remaining were guys who had no remarkable skill that could be called worthy.
Sales, rich, authors, none of the professions were something that would be coveted in the apocalypse.
Before the chaos could spread, Max walked towards the front with his Uzi resting in his hands threateningly.
"Thank you, Jacob. I am assuming that you’ve seeded out the most useful out of them?" He spoke to the neon-jacket wearing man.
Jacob hummed, "Yes."
But then, some guys from the side shouted, "No he hasn’t! We could also do household chores! We can cook bread, pasta, noodles and everything that those girls can do but better! Then why were they chosen?"
It was obvious that Leon and all the other specific professions were important and irreplaceable. But the maids?
Weren’t they only chosen because they were girls?
Sophia and Olivia both trembled hearing the shouts.
Clearly those two were being targeted the most as even Clara was important to the group, considering her connections.
It wasn’t known if she was lying or not, but she did have the numbers to some politicians and Jacob had already warned her that she would be shot down if she was found lying.
So the doubts were quite low.
Max listened to the complaints before turning to look at the frightened girls.
It was obvious what would happen to the two of them if they were left behind.
The guys were slowly losing their humanity and were only restrained because of the fear of guns and awakeners.
The moment that fear was removed from the equation... bad things would happen.
"They were chosen because I cannot trust you bastards with the lives of two beautiful women." Max spoke calmly, "If you have any complaints then go die and become a woman in the next life, maybe I will protect you too, but for now... we are done."
And before anyone else could shout profanities at the twisted logic of the jacked, gun carrying man, Max continued.
"If any of you have any problems, then come to the front and I will answer those myself."
From his tone, it was clear that his method of answering the problems would be... dangerous.
Thus, none of the remaining guys dared to try anything funny.
They only kept glaring at Max and Jacob as they stayed silent.
"I think it’s done now." Andrea whispered behind Fredrinn as she walked slightly forward, standing near him instead of behind, "It’s crazy how a random group entering our hiding place changed so much. For better or for worse, I wouldn’t know."
Fredrinn glanced at her and hummed, "Yeah. I believe in going with the flow, so it is what it is."
Andrea giggled at his reply, bumping him into the side with her hips as she looked up, "Of course you do. You don’t even have much of a choice than to go with the flow."
He coughed in response. He nearly forgot that he told her about his lost memories.
"Yeah right."
But if only the mood was as light and casual throughout the storage room.
Fredrinn and his teammates weren’t worried, and neither were Max’s original teammates along with Christine, but for everyone else, the mood was somber.
Max and Jacob were barking orders, telling the chosen people to move some shelves to form a barrier from the other men who weren’t chosen.
In addition, the chosen were tasked to ransack the entire store room and pack everything useful that they could find.
The stock was a lot and plentiful, but one must not forget that nothing is infinite.
The valuable foods like instant noodles, chips, biscuits, chocolates or low effort items were coveted by both the unchosen and the chosen.
But with the threat of the gun, Max had forced the unchosen onto the backfoot, forcing them to watch as the others grabbed everything.
By the time the looting was finished, the clock had ticked to 11 PM already and everyone needed a good night’s rest if they wanted to start their journey in the morning.
There were no blankets or mattresses, so Andrea suggested the idea to use cardboard boxes as the mattress, which was at least better than laying down on the cold tiles.
Max had returned to his original group after managing the unchosen and erecting the barrier, as Jacob moved towards Fredrinn’s group, the chosen members following after Jacob.
After all, by now they had learnt the hard way that sticking by the awakeners was the safest way to survive in current times.
"So, my friends, how are y’all planning to rest? We need some people to stay awake and keep watch, no? I don’t trust those guys." Jacob spoke eloquently.
