Eternal Forge: Starting with a SSS Rank talent and a Myth Rank Class

Chapter 43- Mjölnir and the Corruption.

Next day.

Leo woke long before dawn.

He rose from his bed and walked to the window. Outside, the sky stretched into an endless expanse of darkness. The palace lay wrapped in the profound silence of the quietest hour.

Unable to remain still, he left his room. The corridor stretched empty before him, illuminated only by flickering torchlight that danced across the ancient stone walls, sending shadows twisting and leaping in its wake.

The entire palace slept. Only the night-shift guards remained awake.

When they saw him, they straightened and saluted. Leo returned the gesture with a nod and continued toward the throne room.

He pushed open the heavy gates leading to the inner chamber where Mjölnir rested, then descended the long, winding stairs.

The chamber looked exactly as he remembered—gloomy, cold, and steeped in the weight of ages. Mjölnir lay upon its stone pedestal, silent and imposing. Leo approached until he stood three feet away.

He had come to examine the hammer once more.

He stepped closer, near enough to trace the fine cracks and faintly glowing runes etched into its surface. A deep chill radiated from the metal, far colder than any ordinary iron or steel.

Beneath that unnatural cold lurked something darker... something unmistakably evil.

His passive scan revealed nothing unusual, so he activated Forge Sight.

The world shifted. Colors and energies unfolded in new, vivid layers. When he turned his gaze fully upon Mjölnir, he saw something else within the hammer.

The hammer was not merely broken or worn by time. Something was actively preventing its repair, steadily draining the power of its runes.

The metal appeared corroded, as though eaten away from within rather than rusted by age. This damage had not come from centuries of erosion but from something deliberately chipping away at it and consuming it.

With his heightened senses, Leo detected a presence inside—an existence that was neither truly living nor dead, but something else entirely.

It pulsed. It breathed.

The corruption... was alive.

Dark veins of energy moved slowly through the hammer like blood through veins. They fed steadily on the metal and runes, converting them into fine ash. With every passing moment, the corruption grew stronger, spreading micrometer by micrometer.

Curious yet cautious, Leo reached out with his hand, seeking to touch and understand it.

At Leo’s touch, the corruption recoiled instantly. It writhed and curled like a serpent. Then it split in two—and one part lunged straight at him.

The impact struck like an icy wave, sharp and piercing. It invaded his mind, clawing at his thoughts.

The hand that had touched the hammer began to blacken. His vision blurred. His head throbbed violently.

Pain tore through his body as the corruption spread, feeding greedily on both flesh and mind.

[Warning!]

[Foreign entity detected...]

Shit— I know! Leo thought through the pain.

[Expel the entity...]

"I’m trying!" he snarled between clenched teeth.

"Fuck, it’s spreading fast.... Ahhhhhhhhh"

Leo screamed. The corruption surged toward his shoulder and raced for his heart. But the moment it drew near his heart, the Eternal Fire within surged in response.

The dormant fire awoke.

It erupted from his heart in a roaring blaze....

Flames engulfed his entire body and mind, yet they did not burn him. Instead, they incinerated the corruption.

The invading entity shrieked in agony, desperately trying to flee, but the fire consumed it completely, reducing it to nothingness.

The remaining corruption inside the hammer shrank back, retreating deep inside and hiding itself once more—undetectable.

Leo channeled the Eternal Fire directly into Mjölnir, attempting to purge the entity at its source. But his flames were not strong enough to destroy it.

It only succeeded in clearing the traces of corruption from his own body.

His vision cleared.

The pounding in his head ceased. The burning pain vanished.

He stumbled back several steps, heart hammering wildly. Fear lingered in his eyes, and his whole body trembled from the ordeal.

Thank the gods it feared the Eternal Flame, he thought, or I would have been in some serious shit.

"Leo?"

A light, quick voice broke the silence behind him. Freya emerged from the stairs, wearing a simple nightgown, her hair falling loosely over her shoulders.

"What are you doing here so early?" she asked, approaching him.

Leo turned. He tried to smile, but it came out bitter and exhausted. His voice shook. "I couldn’t sleep."

As she drew nearer, Freya’s expression shifted from concern to alarm. She took in the blood stains on his hands, his disheveled hair, and his deathly pale face.

"What happened to you?" she gasped. "You’re injured? You look like you’ve seen a ghost."

"It was worse," Leo replied quietly.

He meant to explain, but his legs buckled. Freya caught him, pulling his arm over her shoulder to support his weight.

"What do you mean by worse?" she pressed, her voice tight.

"The corruption inside the hammer... it attacked me."

Leo told her everything: how the entity had recoiled, then lunged; how it had tried to corrupt his mind and body; and how the Eternal Flame had burned it away. Freya listened in silence, her face carefully expressionless, though her hands clenched tightly at her sides.

When he finished, she remained quiet for a long moment.

Finally, she spoke.

"The Inverse... it is not merely darkness or corruption. It is a realm. A place where things that should not exist continue to live."

She paused, her hand hovering just above Mjölnir without touching it.

"When Thor fought the Inverse, he did not battle mere shadows. He fought beings. Creatures without bodies, without fixed forms, without names."

Leo’s throat tightened. "And one of them is inside Mjölnir?"

"Yes," Freya said, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "When the hammer was thrown back, it came with it. It has been feeding on Mjölnir for years, consuming it from within, trying to break it apart."

Leo’s mind reeled. This was no simple damage. It was a living creature from another realm—a parasite slowly devouring the legendary weapon.

"How do I get it out?" he asked.

Freya shook her head. "I don’t know. No one does."

"Someone must have tried."

"They did," she said softly. "And it consumed them."

Leo turned back to Mjölnir, staring at its cracked surface and lifeless runes. He still needed to repair it before he could return home.

"I still need to try," he said.

"Leo..." Freya’s eyes widened in alarm.

He raised a hand, cutting her off gently. "I know it’s dangerous, but I can’t leave until this is done. The entity fears my fire. If I can strengthen the Eternal Flame, I’ll have a real chance."

"You can’t just—"

"I’m not going to attempt the repair right now," Leo said firmly. "First, I need to understand it. I’ll map its patterns and learn its weaknesses."

With that, he lifted the Starfall Hammer and pressed it against Mjölnir. Metal met metal with a resonant clang.

The corruption reacted instantly. It surged through the point of contact, violent and ravenous, attempting to devour the Starfall Hammer and invade Leo’s mind once more.

Leo held firm. Instead of fighting with raw force, he channeled Mnemos—the Rune of Memory—to record everything.

The rune blazed to life. Brilliant light erupted.

The corruption twisted and recoiled. A torrent of flashes flooded his mind: a void of pure darkness, formless shapes writhing, Thor’s final desperate throw, the hammer spinning through the air as the creature was dragged back with it.

Everything was being recorded.

The corruption recoiled, but Leo pressed on. He channeled the Logos Rune, seeking to analyze the creature.

The rune burned brighter. He perceived its structure: veins and roots woven through the metal like a grotesque nervous system.

It possessed consciousness. It had a center.

He reached for that center with the Rune of Curiosity.

The corruption screamed. Pressure built behind his eyes. A metallic taste of copper and ash flooded his mouth.

Then it showed him a memory.

Loneliness. Hunger. Fear. Endless years trapped in suffocating darkness. No voice. No form.

Blood dripped from Leo’s mouth and nose.

Seeing his deteriorating state, Freya panicked.

"Leo! Stop!" She grabbed his arm.

Gasping, Leo pulled back. His hands burned. His head throbbed. The Starfall Hammer dimmed, its runes fading.

Silence fell over the chamber. Leo willed the eternal fire through the hammer and the corruption receded.

He sat on the cold floor, back against the wall, his body still trembling. Freya knelt beside him, her hands resting gently on his shoulders. Her face had gone pale.

"Are you okay?" she asked softly.

Leo nodded, pressing a hand to his throbbing head. "I saw it again. The entity. It has no true form—only darkness, twisted and ravenous. I felt its endless hunger, its will to destroy and consume... and its fear."

"Fear?" Freya repeated, as if she had misheard.

"Yes, fear," Leo said. "I don’t think it chose to stay inside Mjölnir. The hammer is keeping it trapped. But it is the very incarnation of destruction and hunger, slowly eating away at the weapon to survive."

He met her gaze. "It’s not just a prisoner. It might even be sentient."

Freya remained silent for a long time.

"Even if it is sentient," she said at last, "it won’t matter. We captured one during the invasion. There was no way to communicate or reason with it. In the end, we had to destroy it through a joint effort."

Leo said nothing. His mind raced with possibilities.

Maybe it can be understood. Maybe it can be negotiated with. Maybe it can be freed rather than destroyed.

He kept these thoughts to himself.

Freya clearly harbored a deep, personal hatred for these creatures. He would try to reach it first. If that failed, he would eradicate it.

As dawn broke, they returned upstairs together. After a quick shower and a simple meal, Leo made his way to the Royal Archives—the vast repository holding every record and fragment of knowledge preserved in Asgard.

He needed information on the Inverse and its history. He also sought any source of spirit fire or similar power that could strengthen his Eternal Flame.

The archives were immense. Towering stone walls stretched high, lined with countless shelves groaning under scrolls, books, and tablets—thousands of years of accumulated wisdom, forging techniques, history, and lore.

Leo pulled the first scroll toward him and unrolled it carefully. Ancient runes and intricate diagrams of hammers and anvils met his eyes. He studied it thoroughly, then reached for another, and another.

There were hundreds of scrolls. Thousands of years of knowledge.

He felt the absence of the hammer’s full awakening keenly—an awakened AI companion would have made this search immeasurably easier.

Shaking his head, he continued reading.

Hours slipped by as sunlight drifted across the high windows.

He learned how Mjölnir had been forged by the sons of Ivaldi from dying star iron and the blood of giants. He read accounts of Thor’s legendary battles, the invasion from the Inverse, and the cataclysmic clash that had shattered the hammer.

He discovered records of forty-seven previous repair attempts. Every blacksmith had failed. Some had gone mad. Others had died.

None had ever attempted to communicate with the corruption.

Then, in a promising passage near the end of a particularly ancient scroll, he found details about the creatures of the Inverse—how they could bind themselves to objects, hints on how they might be freed, and the known methods of their destruction.

Leo kept reading, his determination burning brighter than ever.
