Of course, washing the dishes didn’t take long. Even after Lu Cheng brushed his teeth and washed his face, not much time had passed.

So, Lu Cheng was soon back at the bedroom door.

Lu Cheng knew, of course, that Shen Nian was already inside the bedroom. If he went in now, he would be able to see her—he could even sleep in the same bed with her.

During the days he and Shen Nian had been apart, Lu Cheng hadn’t stopped thinking of her for a single moment. He had even found himself fantasizing about this very scene from time to time.

However, now that it was all right in front of him, his for the taking with just a single step forward, Lu Cheng found that he was starting to grow nervous.

Lu Cheng’s nervousness wasn’t about anything else, of course. He was just afraid that this was all a dream—that when he woke up, he would still be away on his mission, and Shen Nian would still be a great distance away from him.

Before long, however, the yearning in Lu Cheng’s heart overcame all his stray thoughts.

’So what if this really is just a dream? Even if it is, I want to look at Shen Nian a little longer, to be a little closer to her.’

With that thought, Lu Cheng walked toward their bedroom.

Huddled under the covers, Shen Nian could hear the sounds from outside even more clearly.

She heard Lu Cheng’s footsteps, the sound of water from the kitchen and bathroom, and finally, the sound of him pushing the door open to enter.

Lu Cheng came in and walked to the bed. He lifted the covers and lay down beside her.

Shen Nian sensed the entire process with extraordinary clarity.

In an instant, Lu Cheng’s scent seemed to envelop Shen Nian, filling the entire room.

Shen Nian stirred, her head poking out from under the covers. She looked up, and her eyes met Lu Cheng’s.

At the same time, Lu Cheng’s hand was reaching toward her, about to pull back the very covers that concealed her head.

One could say they’d had the exact same thought. If that wasn’t being perfectly in sync, what was?

Shen Nian, of course, saw what he was about to do and couldn’t help but smile. She then went ahead and slipped out from under the covers completely, leaning back against the headboard.

"All bundled up so tight. Weren’t you afraid you’d suffocate in there?"

"But I have you, don’t I?"

Shen Nian said with a smile as she looked at Lu Cheng. ’See? I wasn’t under there for long before you came to my rescue!’

After she spoke, Shen Nian scooted closer to Lu Cheng until her entire upper body was nestled in his arms.

"It’s so good to have you back."

Shen Nian smiled with contentment and closed her eyes, savoring the profound sense of security and destiny that came with having Lu Cheng by her side again.

As Shen Nian leaned into him, Lu Cheng’s body stiffened slightly.

It wasn’t as if he hadn’t held Shen Nian before—he had, more than once.

But he had almost always been the one to initiate it. And when he’d held her while they slept, he had always behaved himself.

Now, however, the roles were reversed. Shen Nian was the one taking the initiative, and she was shifting about in his arms.

’He was a man, and the woman now in his arms was the one he had loved deeply for so long. How could his mind possibly be a blank slate?’

His heart began to pound, and his breathing grew uneven.
