Chapter 289: The Secret of the Basement
When he arrived at the basement, he found the conditions there to be deplorable—a foul stench permeated the air.
The water pipes and electrical circuits had been maliciously sabotaged. Some instruments and equipment had been destroyed, and a number of files had been burned.
According to the security team, someone had tried to rescue Zhao Feihu. After being repelled, they had sabotaged the dungeon's electrical systems on their way out. But they assured him it would be repaired soon.
Two days later, Chen Qingdi arrived as scheduled and stepped into the company's dungeon. He wore a black suit, his presence as solid as a mountain, and he exuded a daunting aura. Behind him followed a squad of expressionless guards.
Iron chains were pierced through Zhao Feihu's clavicles, pinning him to the wall without a shred of dignity. His face was pale and his eyes were bloodshot; he had clearly not eaten in two days. Yet despite the pain, a strange resolve shone in his eyes, as if he had no fear of death.
Chen Qingdi walked up to Zhao Feihu and asked with a chuckle, "What do you have left now?"
Zhao Feihu glared at Chen Qingdi, a fierce will to survive blazing in his eyes. He stated bluntly, "If you don't kill me today, then the day I get out of here alive, I'll be the one to kill you."
The corners of Chen Qingdi's mouth lifted into a cold smile. "Oh, you'll die, that's for sure. But I won't let you die so easily. I'm keeping you around because you still have your uses."
With that, he turned to the guards and ordered, "As long as you don't kill him, beat him to within an inch of his life." Then he turned and left, leaving Zhao Feihu to suffer endless pain and torment alone in the cell.
Zhao Feihu watched Chen Qingdi's departing figure, a cold smile touching his lips. 'He knew this man was trying to destroy his will with endless pain, but he would never let him succeed.'
In the days that followed, Zhao Feihu endured countless vicious beatings and torment. His body became covered in wounds, but the look in his eyes never changed. That resolute belief and endless hatred seemed to have seeped into the very marrow of his bones.
Chen Qingdi would come to see him from time to time, and each time he would ask the same question. "What do you have left now?" And Zhao Feihu would always give the same response. "If you don't kill me today, then the day I get out of here alive, I'll be the one to kill you."
Chen Qingdi began to grow impatient. He realized this man possessed an unimaginable degree of tenacity and perseverance. So, he ordered the guards once more, "Beat him to within an inch of his life. I want to teach him how precious life is."
The guards subjected Zhao Feihu to another brutal beating, but this time they seemed to hold nothing back. Zhao Feihu's body had reached its limit, and his consciousness began to fade.
However, just as he was about to lose consciousness, a voice echoed in his mind. 'You cannot die here. You have more important things to do.'
The voice jolted Zhao Feihu's spirit. He gritted his teeth and forced himself to endure the rest of the beating.
Though his body was at its absolute limit, his gaze was sharper and more resolute than ever before.
When Chen Qingdi heard the news, he was utterly stunned.
He realized he had underestimated this man. He went to the dungeon himself, his eyes filled with doubt and unease as he looked at Zhao Feihu.
The city's prosperity and tranquility intertwined as waves gently lapped against the coastal reefs. But beneath this seemingly peaceful surface lay a world of secrets.
On the outskirts of the city lay Medical God Island, once a place of mystery and order. Its Island Master, Wu Tian, had long maintained that order through his wisdom and cunning. Now, however, he faced an unprecedented crisis.
Wu Tian sat in his luxurious office in the Island Master's Mansion, his expression grim. He gazed at the ocean view, but his heart was filled with anxiety.
He knew that Chen Qingdi's very existence was a threat. With his cunning and power, the young man could shatter the island's balance at any moment.
"Uncle, what's wrong?" Yang Wei asked as he walked in, noticing Wu Tian's worried expression. As Wu Tian's nephew, Yang Wei had always been his closest confidant.
Wu Tian sighed and turned to look at Yang Wei. "You know the situation on the island, don't you?"
Yang Wei nodded. "I've seen some things. Everyone seems a bit surprised by Chen Qingdi's resurrection, but Uncle, didn't we already make arrangements for him?"
Wu Tian frowned. "Yes. Our original plan was to make Chen Qingdi disappear, but now he's somehow come back to life. It has me worried. I'm starting to fear the consequences of my own decisions."
Yang Wei moved to Wu Tian's side. "Uncle, what we need to do now is reassure everyone. Chen Qingdi's return might have been an accident, but we have to use this opportunity to show the people of the island our determination."
Wu Tian took a deep breath. "You're right. We need a plan." He looked at Yang Wei. "Do you have any suggestions?"
Yang Wei mulled it over for a moment. "Uncle, we're at a disadvantage right now, so we need to find a reliable ally. I heard the island's assassin organization, Lone Wolf, recently took a job from you. If we can offer a high enough price, they might be willing to help us."
A flicker of doubt crossed Wu Tian's eyes. "An assassin organization? Are you sure that will work?"
Yang Wei smiled. "Uncle, we don't have any other choice. Besides, I have a connection with the leader of Lone Wolf. Perhaps we can negotiate."
The next day, Yang Wei took an exquisite gift box to the secret headquarters of the assassin organization Lone Wolf, located on the other side of the city. The organization's leader, codenamed Lone Wolf, was a mysterious and ruthless man.
Lone Wolf looked at Yang Wei. "You've come. What is it?" His voice was low and gravelly.
Yang Wei opened the gift box. "A token of our Island Master's respect. He hopes to reach an agreement with you."
Lone Wolf raised an eyebrow. "Oh? I'm listening."
Yang Wei detailed Wu Tian's plan for Lone Wolf, who listened quietly without offering any opinion. When Yang Wei had finished, he finally spoke, his voice slow. "Your plan sounds... interesting. But why should I trust you?"
Yang Wei smiled. "Because we have a common enemy. Besides, the compensation we're offering is more than enough to pique your interest."
Lone Wolf fell silent for a moment. "I'll need to think about it." His words were laden with threat and insinuation.
Yang Wei didn't back down. "Of course. We also need time to prove our resolve. I look forward to a successful collaboration." He rose and left, leaving Lone Wolf alone in the room.
In the time that followed, Lone Wolf began to plan his attack on Chen Qingdi, but he understood this would be no simple task.
