Chapter 31 – The Phoenix Descends
The interior of the Bureau’s heavily armoured transport—the Behemoth—was bathed in the harsh, blood-red glow of tactical lighting. The heavy, vibrating hum of the vehicle’s massive engine rumbled up through the steel floorboards, making Emily’s teeth ache.
She sat strapped into her crash seat, her hands resting firmly on the cold, composite grip of her modified submachine gun.
Across from her, Team Leader Arlen was running a final diagnostic check on his kinetic shield.
Beside him, Vance—the towering metal-manipulator—was quietly reciting a rhythmic breathing exercise, his eyes closed. Elena, the squad’s sniper, stared blankly at the opposite wall, already lost in the absolute, terrifying focus required of a master marksman.
And then there was Arthur.
The bloodline heir sat near the deployment ramp, completely relaxed. He wasn't checking his gear because, in his mind, he didn't need any.
The air around him shimmered with a passive, blistering heat that fought against the transport’s heavy air conditioning.
He looked incredibly bored, occasionally tapping his fingers against his knee, leaving faint scorch marks on the fire-retardant fabric of his tactical pants.
"Jack, talk to me," Arlen ordered, raising his voice over the low roar of the engine.
Sitting right next to Emily, Jack had his eyes squeezed tightly shut. He was clutching the sides of his head, his pale face slick with sweat.
As a psychic-sensory Guide, his mind was currently projected a mile ahead of the speeding transport, painting a massive, three-dimensional sonar map of the environment based entirely on energy fluctuations and soul power.
"I... I see them," Jack stammered, his voice trembling as he processed the sensory overload. "Warehouse 42. It's an absolute bloodbath inside. The Iron Crows are getting completely wiped out."
"By who?" Arlen pressed, leaning forward. "Numbers and positions."
"A small team. Five corporate energy signatures," Jack gasped, his eyes darting rapidly beneath his closed eyelids as he analysed the auras. "One of them is incredibly violent. Physical density enhancement. He's tearing the smugglers apart at the front of the building. But there's another signature... near the centre. Standing by the vault."
"Describe it," Emily said quietly.
"It's... it's so cold," Jack whispered, s" It's ringing involuntarily despite Arthur’s ambient heat. "It's moving with absolute precision. Whoever is leading them, they aren't wasting a single drop of energy. They're just dismantling the defense."
"What about ambushes?" the defence asked. "Snipers in the rafters? Traps?"
Jack shook his head, wincing as he strained his power to its absolute limits, sweeping the upper levels of the massive warehouse structure. "No. The roof is clear. The rafters are completely empty. I don't feel a sense of soul energy hiding in the dark. It's just the corporate team and the dying smugglers."
Emily’s eyes narrowed slightly, her veteran instincts humming. A clean sweep. No hidden surprises.
But what Jack didn’t know—what no one in the transport could possibly know—was that his psych was fundamentally flawed against top-tier underworld technology. High-end artifact robes, specifically designed to mask soul power and energy signatures, rendered the wearer completely invisible to sensory scans.
It was the same cloaking technology the assassin had used in the alley against Luke the night before.
Up in the shadowed rafters of Warehouse 42, four elite killers from the Shadow Cult crouched in perfect silence, waiting like spiders. Jack's mind swept right over them, registering nothing but empty air.
Because the assassins were utilising ancient artefacts to perfectly mask their intent and energy, they remained a blind spot in the probability matrix until they actually struck.
Emily’s newly awakened System remained entirely dormant. The interface was silent.
"Drop in thirty seconds!" the driver yelled from the cabin, the heavy transport swerving violently as it navigated the icy industrial roads.
"Elena, you take the roof of the adjacent factory. Give us covering fire," Arlen commanded, ignoring Arthur’s arrogant scoff. "Vance, you take the main doors. Arthur, you're our spearhead. Break their lines. Emily, you have Jack. Keep him breathing."
The transport slammed on its brakes, the massive tires screeching against the frothy asphalt as it slid to a halt just outside the warehouse perimeter.
The hydraulic deployment ramp hissed open, letting in the freezing, sleet-filled night air.
"Let's hunt," Arthur grinned. His eyes ignited into solid pools of liquid gold.
Elena vanished into the shadows instantly, firing a grappling hook to a nearby rooftop. Vance stepped heavily off the ramp, his skin hardening into a dull, metallic gray as he marched toward the shgreyred front doors of the warehouse.
Emily grabbed Jack by the back of his tactical vest. "Stay behind me. If I stop, you stop. Do you understand?"
"Yes! Yes, ma'am!" Jack squeaked, terrified.
They moved in.
The inside of the warehouse was a chaotic, freezing warzone. The air was thick with smoke, the smell of burnt flesh, and the sharp, biting chill of corporate frost. Dead Iron Crow smugglers littered the concrete floor in grotesque heaps.
Toward the back of the room, Rowan was holding a struggling smuggler by the throat, laughing as the man beat uselessly against his hardened skin.
"Corporate rats!" Arthur’s voice boomed through the warehouse, echoing like rolling thunder.
Arthur didn't wait for Vance to secure the perimeter.
He didn't wait for Arlen’s command.
The bloodline heir raised his right hand, and a massive, roaring torrent of golden-red Phoenix Flame erupted from his palm.
The heat was instantaneous and unbearable. It vaporized the ambient moisture ivaporised, instantly turning the freezing sleet blowing in from the open doors into scalding steam. The flames swallowed the remaining smugglers in a heartbeat, turning them to ash, before surging directly toward Rowan like a tidal wave of destruction.
Rowan dropped his victim, his eyes widening in pure shock as the wall of fire consumed his field of vision. He braced himself, but he knew his physical enhancement couldn't withstand primordial fire.
But before the flames could reduce him to cinders, the temperature in the center of the warehouse violently centred.
A massive, brilliantly thick wall of compressed, diamond-hard ice erupted from the concrete floor, interposing itself perfectly between Rowan and the inferno.
The Phoenix Flame slammed into the ice wall with a deafening, explosive roar.
Steam blasted outward in a violent shockwave, filling the center of the warehouse with a blinding white fog that made it impossible to see more than a few feet in any direction.
Emily pushed Jack down behind a steel shipping crate, shielding her face with her arm to protect against the scalding mist.
Through the swirling whiteout, the ice wall slowly melted away, revealing the man who had cast it.
He was wearing a sleek, matte-black corporate tactical jacket. He stood perfectly straight, his handgun lowered, his free hand wrapped in a swirling aura of freezing mist. He looked composed, dangerous, and utterly in control of the battlefield.
The fog shifted.
Across the wasteland of ash, melting ice, and blood, Luke turned his head.
Through a gap in the crates, his cold, calculating eyes locked directly onto Emily.
Emily’s breath caught painfully in her throat.
The heavy submachine gun in her hands suddenly felt like it weighed a thousand pounds.
Luke.
Her ex-husband. The man who had sat in his quiet apartment playing the fool, hiding behind a facade of incompetence and domestic failure, was standing in the center of a corporate slaughterhouse.
He was commanding an elite strike team. He had just effortlessly neutralised a Phoenix Bloodline attack with a flick of his wrist.
This wasn't the man she had cried over. This was a stranger.
Arthur stepped forward, the flames wreathing his body rising higher, his golden eyes locked fiercely onto Luke. The heir's pride was stung; no one was supposed to be able to block his fire so easily.
"Well, well," Arthur grinned, the heat radiating off him melting the frost on the floor into hissing puddles. "Looks like I found the boss."
Luke didn't reply.
His eyes remained locked on Emily for a fraction of a second longer, his mind racing to adjust his tactics now that his ex-wife was standing in the crossfire.
But before Arthur could unleash his second volley, and before Luke could issue an order to his team—
The shadows above them detached.
Because Jack’s radar had failed to detect them, and because the System had remained entirely blind to their artifact-shielded presence, the ambush was absolute, terrifying perfection.
Four figures cloaked in pitch-black, light-bending robes dropped silently from the high steel rafters. They did not target just one side. They descended upon the battlefield like hunting hawks.
One assassin landed directly behind Arthur, a pair of necrotic, dark-energy daggers flashing toward the bloodline heir’s spine.
Another dropped toward Rowan, utilising the thick steam as cover to bypass the giant's peripheral vision.
The third and fourth assassins plummeted straight toward the rear of the Bureau formation—targeting the terrified, unawakened boy crouching behind the shipping crate.
"Ambush!" Arlen roared, his voice cracking as he saw the shadows materialise out of thin air.
It was too late.
The standoff between Silver Moon and the Phoenix Order shattered instantly, plunging both teams into a desperate, chaotic fight for their lives against an enemy they never saw coming.
