Transmigrated into a Novel as the Female Lead’s Ex-Husband

Chapter 28 – The Phoenix Order Assembles

The transfer was supposed to take a week.

Director Vale had explicitly given Emily seven days to hand over her pending cases, clear her desk, and mentally prepare for her reassignment. But in the Bureau, timelines were only suggestions waiting to be broken by the ugly reality of the city.

Barely twenty-four hours after the transfer order—and mere hours after her world-shattering System awakening—her encrypted Bureau phone had buzzed with an emergency assembly code.

The address provided did not lead to the towering, glass-and-steel Bureau headquarters. It led to an abandoned subway terminal deep beneath the city's financial district.

Emily drove her car down a restricted service ramp, passing through three separate, heavily armed checkpoints. Her mind was a storm of calculated thoughts, completely focused on the glowing blue interface that now resided in her mind. She had spent the entire night analysing the System, testing its limits, and accepting the impossible burden it had placed on her.

She parked her car in the subterranean garage and walked toward a heavy steel blast door.

The System said I have to protect a newly registered awakener named Jack, Emily thought, swiping her Bureau credentials on the scanner. It said my first power awakening is the reward. If I'm going to survive the 10th Trial, I need that power.

The blast doors hissed open, revealing a sprawling, state-of-the-art underground command centre. The air smelled of ozone, cold concrete, and gun oil. Holographic tactical maps floated over polished black tables. Rows of weapon lockers lined the walls, filled with advanced, anti-awakener armaments—stun batons, suppression cuffs, and rifles loaded with energy-piercing rounds.

"You made it in good time, Agent Emily."

Emily looked up. Standing by the central holographic table was Team Leader Arlen—her previous boss, and a man she respected deeply. He looked more tired than usual, reviewing a rapid stream of data on a tablet.

"Team Leader," Emily greeted him, walking over. "I thought we had a week before this unit went active."

"We did," Arlen sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "But the underworld didn't get the memo. Villain activity spiked aggressively tonight, and corporate strike teams are mobilising across three different sectors. Headquarters hit the panic button and authorised an emergency assembly. The Phoenix Order goes live tonight."

Emily nodded, turning to look around the room as the rest of her new team began to gather.

The composition of the Phoenix Order was fascinating. Like a standard Bureau team, it was a functional hybrid of awakened power users and non-awakened specialist agents. But the ratio here heavily favoured high-tier combatants. This wasn't an investigation squad; it was a heavy-assault unit built for war.

"Let me bring you up to speed on the roster," Arlen said quietly, following her gaze. "We are heavy on firepower tonight, which means the non-awakened agents need to be flawless on tactical support."

Arlen gestured to a massive man standing near the armoury. He was easily six-foot-five, with a chest like a bank vault and a shaved head. He was currently strapping a heavy, shock-absorbing gauntlet to his forearm.

"That's Vance," Arlen explained. "Awakened. Metal manipulation and physical density enhancement. He’s our frontline shield. If something hits too hard for body armour to stop, you stand behind him."

Sitting on a crate next to Vance was a woman with sharp, angular features and hair pulled into a tight, practical braid. She was not awakened, but the way she expertly stripped and reassembled a high-calibre sniper rifle spoke volumes about her lethality.

"Elena. Overwatch and precision marksman," Arlen continued. "Non-awakened, but she shoots custom suppression rounds that can punch through a mid-tier energy barrier from a mile away. Beside her is Agent Thorne—our combat medic and tech specialist. Also non-awakened, but he can patch a severed artery in the back of a moving transport."

Thorne, an older man with greying temples, gave Emily a curt, professional nod before going back to counting medical supplies.

It was a brutally efficient group. The awakened provided the raw, overwhelming force, while the agents provided the precision, the intelligence, and the life support.

Then, Emily’s eyes landed on a young man standing awkwardly near the edge of the group.

He was thin, wearing an oversized hoodie, and constantly adjusting his glasses. He looked incredibly nervous, sweating despite the cool temperature of the underground base. He did not look like a hardened Bureau operative.

A familiar, mechanical chime rang in Emily's head. A translucent blue text box materialised over the boy’s head.

[Target Locked: Jack.]

[Classification: The Guide (Support / Psychic Resonance).]

[Status: Vulnerable. Survival Probability: Low.]

So that’s him, Emily thought, her eyes narrowing slightly. He didn't look like the saviour of the world. He looked like a college student who had stumbled into a warzone.

"And that," Arlen said, lowering his voice, "is Jack. He awakened three days ago. His combat capability is zero, but he has a highly unique psychic sensory network. He can feel energy fluctuations through solid concrete and map enemy positions in his head. He’s drafted strictly to act as our radar."

"H-hi," Jack stuttered, noticing them looking and offering a weak, trembling wave. "I really don't know why I'm here. I've never even held a gun."

"You won't need to," Emily said, stepping toward him. Her voice was calm and steady, projecting the kind of absolute certainty that panicking rookies needed to hear. "You stay behind me, keep your head down, and tell us where they are. We'll handle the rest."

Jack let out a shaky breath, looking incredibly relieved that at least one person in the room was treating him like a human being rather than a piece of equipment.

Suddenly, the heavy blast doors hissed open again.

The moment the newcomer stepped inside, the temperature in the massive room violently spiked.

It wasn't a subtle warmth. It was an oppressive, suffocating heat that dried the back of Emily's throat instantly.

Walking into the command centre was a young man in his early twenties. He moved with the effortless, absolute arrogance of someone who had never lost a fight in his life. His hair was a brilliant, striking shade of golden-red, and his eyes burned like actual embers. He wore a high-end, heat-resistant combat uniform, customised to accommodate the fiery aura that naturally bled from his skin.

Arthur. Heir to the legendary Phoenix Bloodline.

As Emily looked at him, her System interface violently glitched. The blue screen turned a harsh, warning crimson.

[WARNING: Extreme Destiny Weight Detected.]

[Target: Arthur Pendelton.]

[Classification: Top-Tier Combat Anomaly (Phoenix Flame).]

[Note: This individual’s fate is highly volatile. His actions will drastically alter the survival probability of the 10th Trial. Approach with extreme caution.]

Emily’s breath hitched, but she forced her expression to remain perfectly stoic. Destiny's weight? The System was practically screaming at her that this arrogant kid was a walking weapon of mass destruction.

Arthur strode past the support staff without so much as a glance. He completely ignored Emily, Jack, Elena, and Thorne, acting as if non-combatants were entirely beneath his notice. He gave a brief, respectful nod to Vance—acknowledging the only other high-tier Awakened in the room—before walking straight up to Team Leader Arlen.

"I was told there was an emergency, Arlen," Arthur said, his voice smooth but dripping with aristocratic boredom. "I left a very comfortable dinner for this. I hope it's worth my time."

"It is," Arlen replied calmly, completely unbothered by Arthur's haughty attitude. Arlen knew how to manage powerful egos; it was why he had been chosen to lead this volatile mix of people.

Emily kept her distance, standing near Jack and observing Arthur silently. She didn't like members of the bloodline families after how they took Luke from her; her dislike toward them increased.

"Listen up, everyone," Arlen called out, his voice echoing through the bunker. The scattered team members, both agents and power users, gathered around the central table.

Arlen tapped a button, and a holographic map of the industrial district flared to life. A specific warehouse glowed red.

"Thirty minutes ago, our informants confirmed that a mid-level smuggling syndicate known as the Iron Crows received a shipment of extremely rare alchemical materials," Arlen briefed them, his tone sharp and authoritative. "We were preparing a standard raid to seize the goods for evidence. But the situation just changed."

Arlen tapped the console again, showing a secondary blip moving rapidly toward the warehouse.

"Silver Moon Corporation," Arlen said, his face darkening. "They want those materials for their R&D division. They’ve deployed a corporate strike team to hit the Iron Crows and steal the cargo before we arrive. We cannot let that happen. If Silver Moon secures those materials, they vanish into corporate black sites forever."

Arthur’s eyes lit up with violent, predatory excitement. "Corporate rats. Finally, something worth burning."

Emily’s heart pounded in her chest.

Silver Moon.

That was Luke's new employer.

Before she could process the implications, the blue screen in her mind flashed urgently.

[System Alert: Hostile Factions converging on target coordinates.]

[Warning: The Guide (Jack) is required for operational tracking, but his combat survival capability is 0%.]

[Objective: Deploy to the industrial district. Keep Jack alive during the ensuing crossfire.]

"Suit up and get to the transports," Arlen ordered, grabbing his own heavy tactical vest. "We are moving in immediately. Arthur, Vance, you are our primary breach. Elena, get high ground. Agents, secure the perimeter and lock down the cargo. Jack, stay in the middle of the formation and keep your sensory network wide open."

"Y-yes, sir," Jack stammered, swallowing hard.

Emily quietly drew her Bureau-issued sidearm, checking the chamber with practised, mechanical precision. Her eyes drifted to the holographic map one last time.

Silver Moon Corporation. A warehouse raid.

The board was set. The pieces were moving. And Emily stepped toward the armoured transport vehicle, ready for the storm.
