The Great Overthrow [A Souls-like LitRPG]

Chapter 22: The Glass Labyrinth

The descent from the Oracle's towering mountain peak was a slow, freezing plunge into the abyss. The bitter wind of the Great Land howled through the jagged rocks, tearing at the Vagabond's ragged leather cloak. Beneath the heavy fabric, the [Phantom's Silver Cuirass] remained hidden, absorbing the freezing ambient temperature and turning the metal into a slab of ice against his chest. Yet, he did not shiver. His mutated biology, sustained by the two Complete Energies locked in his core, regulated his vital functions with mechanical efficiency.

The Ash-Steed moved with the heavy, rhythmic gait of a veteran engine of war. It was a massive, brutal beast, bred not for speed or elegance, but for pure, unadulterated endurance. Each time its thick, iron-plated hooves struck the uneven stone path, a dull, resonant thud echoed into the empty air.

Behind the Vagabond, resting securely on the broad, flat expanse of the beast's rear saddle, was Shadow.

The juvenile Royal Wolf was not standing guard; he was fast asleep. The sheer biological toll of absorbing six concentrated points of raw Spiritual Energy in a matter of minutes had forced the wolf's system into a state of rapid evolutionary hibernation. Shadow's thick, newly grown muscles twitched occasionally, expanding and setting as his royal blood digested the souls. His heavy head rested against the base of the Vagabond's spine, the wolf's steady, incredibly hot breath radiating through the Vagabond's cloak, providing the only source of warmth in the freezing night.

The Vagabond allowed the wolf to sleep. The Obsidian Canyons below were no place for paws, no matter how tough the beast was becoming. The glass would flay the wolf's pads to the bone. For now, the Vagabond would carry the burden of vigilance alone.

As the mountain path finally leveled out, the terrain shifted abruptly. The dull, grey limestone gave way to the Obsidian Canyons.

It was a landscape born of ancient, catastrophic heat. The canyon walls towered hundreds of feet into the air, composed entirely of smooth, black volcanic glass. The floor was a treacherous sea of jagged, shattered obsidian shards that glittered with a dark, iridescent menace under the struggling moonlight. It was beautiful, and it was entirely lethal.

The moment the Ash-Steed stepped onto the canyon floor, the sound was deafening.

CRUNCH.

The horse's heavy, iron-plated hooves shattered the thick glass shards into black powder. In the dead, absolute silence of the wasteland, the sound of breaking glass echoed off the towering obsidian walls like a collapsing chandelier.

The Vagabond's jaw tightened. The [Nerve Override] trait immediately suppressed the spike of human anxiety that flared in his chest, replacing panic with cold, calculating logic. He pulled back slightly on the thick leather reins, forcing the massive horse to slow its pace to a agonizingly deliberate walk.

Crunch. Pause. Crunch. Pause.

He needed to minimize the acoustic footprint. He was a mercenary trained in the art of the silent kill, riding a two-ton beast covered in iron through a valley of broken glass. It was a tactical nightmare.

The Vagabond's eyes, enhanced by the [Perception +3] trait of the Willow Ring, scanned the reflective, kaleidoscopic walls of the canyon. The glass warped and twisted the shadows, creating false movement in the periphery of his vision. Every jagged outcropping looked like a crouching knight; every reflection of the moon looked like a drawn blade.

Hours bled into the night. The air grew perceptibly thicker, carrying the acrid, choking stench of sulfur and burning coal. They were getting closer to the Iron City. The Ash-Steed let out a low, rattling wheeze, its massive lungs struggling to filter the increasingly toxic atmosphere.

Suddenly, the Vagabond pulled hard on the reins, bringing the horse to an absolute halt.

Shadow, sensing the sudden shift in momentum, stirred behind him, letting out a soft, questioning grunt. The Vagabond reached back, resting his gloved hand on the wolf's flank, silently commanding him to remain still.

Three miles ahead, near a narrow choke point in the canyon, the darkness was violently pierced by a beam of harsh, unnatural white light.

It was a magical revealing torch. The beam swept across the canyon floor, turning the black glass into a blinding mirror, reflecting the light a hundred times over.

Then, a second beam ignited. Then a third.

The Capital Knight Scout Patrol.

Through the enhanced vision of his silver ring, the Vagabond magnified the distant figures. They were not ordinary soldiers. They were towering men, clad head-to-toe in heavy, interlocking plate armor that gleamed with an offensive mix of polished steel and First Kingdom gold. Their helmets were completely sealed, featuring narrow, glowing visors that projected the sweeping white light. They moved not as individuals, but as a perfectly synchronized, highly disciplined killing unit.

There were five of them. Four holding the heavy, halberd-like lances that glowed with suppressed arcane energy, and one walking slightly ahead---the Captain---holding a massive kite shield and a short sword.

They were sweeping the canyon methodically, their magical lights designed to burn away illusions, shadows, and stealth cloaks.

I cannot fight five Capital Knights in an open field, the Vagabond analyzed coldly. My iron arrows will shatter against their golden plates like twigs. My mana is depleted. If they spot me, I die. If I try to gallop away, the sound of the glass breaking will echo for ten miles, and they will run me down with arcane speed.

He looked at the towering obsidian walls around him. To his left, there was a deep, narrow fissure carved into the glass---a natural fault line created by tectonic pressure. It was incredibly tight, barely wide enough for the massive Ash-Steed, but it offered total darkness.

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

With precise, gentle pressure from his knees, the Vagabond guided the horse toward the fissure. The beast, bred for the horrors of war, understood the need for silence. It stepped carefully, the iron hooves crushing the glass with agonizing slowness.

They slipped into the narrow crevice just as the sweeping beam of a revealing torch passed over the spot they had occupied seconds prior.

The Vagabond dismounted smoothly, his boots making a soft crunch on the pulverized glass dust inside the fissure. He stood at the entrance of the crack, pressing his back flush against the cold, smooth obsidian wall, pulling the dark fabric of his cloak tightly around his silver armor to kill any chance of reflection.

Behind him, Shadow finally stood up on the saddle. The evolutionary slumber was over. The wolf was fully awake, its mismatched golden and violet eyes locked onto the entrance of the fissure. The beast did not growl. It knew they were the hunted.

The heavy, rhythmic thud of armored boots marching over broken glass grew louder. The patrol was approaching the choke point.

The Vagabond held his breath, slipping his Whisperer's Recurve from his shoulder. He did not draw an arrow. He just held the wood, waiting.

"Hold formation," a deep, magically amplified voice echoed through the canyon. It was the Captain. "The magical residue from the Blackwood theft trails in this direction. The anomaly crossed here. Keep your revealing lenses active. Do not trust the reflections."

The heavy footsteps paused. The Vagabond could see the blinding white beams sweeping across the entrance of his fissure, missing by mere inches. The light was so intense it physically heated the glass near his face.

"Captain," a second, slightly higher voice spoke. "There is pulverized glass near this fault line. Fresh tracks. Something heavy passed through here within the hour."

The Vagabond's grip on his bow tightened until the ash-wood groaned. They had spotted the Ash-Steed's tracks.

"Outrider," the Captain commanded. "Investigate the fissure. The rest of you, maintain the perimeter lock."

A single set of heavy, armored footsteps broke away from the main group. The crunch, crunch, crunch of steel sabatons on glass grew unbearably loud. The Outrider was walking directly toward the narrow crack where the Vagabond was hiding.

The Vagabond's mind raced through a thousand tactical simulations in a fraction of a second. If I let him look inside, he yells, and four more rush me. If I shoot him, the arrow might not pierce his breastplate, and he yells. I must kill him before his brain registers my presence. Total central nervous system failure.

He reached over his shoulder and slowly, silently, pulled a heavy iron-tipped arrow from his quiver. He nocked it to the bowstring. He didn't draw it back yet; the tension of the string might make a sound.

The blinding white light of the Outrider's visor spilled into the entrance of the fissure. The heavy golden pauldron of the knight appeared around the corner.

The Vagabond didn't hesitate. Relying entirely on the monstrous, unformatted strength of his [STR: 14] and [DEX: 18], he drew the heavy bowstring back to his ear in a single, fluid microsecond.

He didn't aim for the chest. He aimed directly at the glowing white lens of the knight's visor.

THWACK.

At point-blank range, the sheer kinetic force of the Vagabond's draw was devastating. The heavy iron tip of the arrow shattered the magical glass of the visor, punching straight through the knight's eye and driving deep into his brain cavity.

The knight's body went completely rigid. The blinding light of his visor flickered and died instantly.

But a massive man in heavy steel and gold armor does not fall silently. He was about to collapse backward onto the canyon floor, a crash that would instantly alert the Captain standing fifty feet away.

Before the Vagabond could reach out to catch the falling corpse, a blur of pitch-black fur and violent dark violet mist launched over his shoulder.

Shadow didn't bark. The juvenile Royal Wolf leaped from the saddle of the Ash-Steed, clearing the Vagabond's head entirely. The beast's massive, heavily muscled jaws snapped shut around the armored knight's throat.

The bite force of the evolved wolf was terrifying. Even through the chainmail gorget protecting the knight's neck, Shadow's fangs found purchase. With a brutal, silent twist of its massive neck, Shadow ripped the falling knight forward, dragging the heavy armored body into the dark fissure before it could hit the open canyon floor.

The knight's body hit the dust inside the crevice with a muffled, heavy thud, pinned entirely under the weight of the juvenile wolf. The Vagabond immediately stepped forward, pressing his boot onto the knight's armored chest to prevent any death spasms from causing the armor plates to clatter.

Silence rushed back into the canyon.

Outside, the Captain's voice echoed. "Outrider? Report."

The Vagabond held his breath, his hand resting on his knife. If the Captain came to check, he would have to fight a chaotic, close-quarters battle in the dark.

"Outrider!" the Captain barked, a hint of annoyance in his amplified voice.

There was a tense, agonizing pause.

"Probably chasing a glass-lizard again," another knight muttered. "His comm-link is offline."

"Leave him," the Captain ordered coldly. "If he wants to wander the obsidian in the dark, let him find his own way back to the garrison. We maintain the sweep pattern. Move out."

The heavy, synchronized footsteps resumed, slowly marching away from the fissure, their blinding lights fading down the canyon.

The Vagabond exhaled a long, slow breath. He looked down. Shadow was standing over the dead knight, the wolf's fangs still locked onto the man's throat, ensuring absolute silence.

"Good boy," the Vagabond whispered, a rare sliver of genuine praise in his cold voice.

Shadow released the throat, his tail giving a single, short wag before he stepped back.

The Vagabond knelt beside the corpse. The iron arrow was lodged deep inside the skull; retrieving it would require breaking the helmet and making noise. He left it.

His Magic Book vibrated softly against his hip, absorbing the essence of the fallen knight.

Target: Capital Knight Outrider.

Spiritual Energy Harvested: +5 SE.

Current Spiritual Energy: 5 / 10 SE.

He had gained five points, but he was down to twenty-one arrows. The economy of the Great Land always demanded a toll.

He stood up and walked back to the Ash-Steed. The massive horse was trembling slightly, its breathing becoming ragged. The air inside the fissure was stagnant, heavy with the toxic smog blowing in from the east.

"We need to move," the Vagabond said, grabbing the reins and leading the horse out of the crevice.

Shadow did not jump back onto the saddle. The wolf was fully awake now, its juvenile muscles primed for action. It took up a flanking position beside the horse, its dark violet mist blending perfectly with the dark glass of the canyon floor.

For the next two hours, they moved relentlessly through the labyrinth of obsidian, avoiding two more distant patrols by using the deep shadows cast by the canyon walls.

Slowly, the towering black glass began to recede, giving way to barren, ash-choked earth. The moonlight vanished entirely, swallowed by an impenetrable, suffocating canopy of thick, crimson-tinged industrial smog.

The Ash-Steed stumbled, letting out a wet, painful cough. The beast's lungs were failing rapidly in the toxic atmosphere.

The Vagabond pulled the reins, bringing the horse to a halt at the crest of a massive ridge. He looked down, and the true scale of his nightmare revealed itself.

There, sprawling across a blasted, lifeless valley, was the Iron City.

It was a brutalist monument to suffering. Walls of black iron, hundreds of feet high and thick enough to withstand a siege of dragons, encircled a sprawling metropolis of smoke, fire, and grinding gears. Massive pipes leaked glowing, radioactive runoff into a dead river. The sound of a million hammers striking anvils drifted up the ridge, a chaotic, unending heartbeat of war.

Directly below them, leading to the massive, heavily fortified main gate, was a colossal bridge suspended over a canyon of fire. The bridge was heavily guarded by hundreds of Capital Knights, their white magical torches cutting through the smog.

The Vagabond patted the neck of the exhausted, wheezing Ash-Steed. The horse had served its purpose perfectly, delivering him to the gates without shattering his boots on the glass. But it could go no further.

He dismounted, his boots hitting the ash-covered earth. He looked at the impenetrable gates of the Iron City, then at the juvenile Royal Wolf standing at his side, its eyes reflecting the hellish fires of the foundries.

He had no army. He had no magic. He had twenty-one arrows and a wolf.

"Time to find the rust," the Vagabond muttered, pulling his ragged cloak tightly around his silver armor, and began the long walk down toward the gates of hell.
