Chapter 12: The Hunter and the Hunted
The descent from the Warden’s Outpost was a suffocating spiral into the bowels of the Great Land. The Vagabond moved with the deliberate, silent grace of a predator, his heavy leather boots making no sound against the ancient, cracked stone. Ahead of him, the narrow corridor plunged into absolute darkness, a void so complete it felt physical. But for the Vagabond, the darkness was a canvas. The Silver Ring of the Weeping Willow on his right index finger pulsed with a faint, icy rhythm.
Through the lens of his newly acquired [Perception] stat, the pitch-black corridor was rendered in hyper-detailed, monochromatic grayscale. He could see the intricate spiderwebs clinging to the vaulted ceiling.
He could see the jagged edges of the broken floor tiles. More importantly, he could see the tracks. To the naked eye, the dust on the floor was undisturbed. But to the Vagabond, the faint, smeared footprints of a heavy boot were glowing with a dull, residual luminescence. Someone had walked down this corridor recently. They were moving fast, their strides long and careless, fueled by the arrogance of a hunter who believed he was alone. "Careless," the Vagabond breathed, his voice a ghost of a whisper. He glanced down. Shadow was glued to his left leg, its mismatched eyes—one molten gold, one abyssal violet—locked onto the darkness ahead. The wolf pup’s hackles were raised, a silent, vibrating growl trapped deep within its throat. Shadow could smell what the Vagabond could see. The metallic tang of fresh blood from the murdered mercenary upstairs was still clinging to the killer's clothes.
The Vagabond nocked a heavy, iron-tipped arrow to the Whisperer's Recurve, the dark ash-wood groaning softly under the tension. He was no longer playing a survival game against mindless, rotting monsters. He was playing a game of chess against a human being. A Player Killer. A mercenary who had realized that hunting his own kind was a far more lucrative method of farming Spiritual Energy and Lira than risking his neck against the horrors of the First Kingdom. The corridor began to widen, the claustrophobic stone walls giving way to a massive, circular antechamber. The Vagabond stopped at the threshold, pressing his back against the cold granite, melting into the shadows. He peeked around the corner. The antechamber was dimly lit by a cluster of sickly, pale-yellow crystals growing from the ceiling. In the center of the room, surrounded by shattered pillars and mounds of ash, was a heavy, iron-bound chest. And standing in front of it was the killer.
He was a hulking man, heavily armored in a customized version of the Secret Alliance’s boiled-leather gear. He had reinforced his shoulders and chest with jagged plates of rusted iron scavenged from the crypts. In his right hand, he held a massive, serrated falchion—a brutal weapon designed to tear flesh rather than slice it. But what caught the Vagabond’s attention was the man’s left hand. It was glowing.
The killer was holding his palm over the heavy iron lock of the chest. A swirling, violent cluster of orange sparks danced across his fingertips, slowly superheating the metal mechanism. An Active Skill, the Vagabond realized, his eyes narrowing. He’s unlocked an elemental trait. The killer was murmuring to himself, his voice echoing slightly in the vast chamber. "Come on... melt, you ancient piece of trash.
Just give me the loot." The Vagabond’s mind worked with terrifying, cold efficiency. This was not a duel of honor. There were no referees in the Sunken Catacombs. There was only the living and the looted. The man had heavy chest and shoulder armor, but his neck, the back of his knees, and his glowing left hand were completely exposed.
The Vagabond had an [18 DEX] stat and a bow designed for silent, lethal precision.
He didn't hesitate. He stepped out from behind the wall, drawing the bowstring back to his cheek in one fluid, practiced motion. He exhaled slowly, watching the man’s glowing hand through the grayscale clarity of the ring. Twang. The sound of the bowstring snapping forward was muffled by the sheer velocity of the arrow. The iron-tipped shaft crossed the thirty yards of the antechamber in a fraction of a second. It didn't aim for the man's chest.
It struck exactly where the Vagabond intended. The arrow drove straight through the back of the killer’s unarmored left knee, shattering the joint and exiting through the kneecap with a sickening crunch. The massive man roared in sudden, blinding agony. His glowing hand flared uncontrollably as he collapsed backward, the elemental fire fizzling out as his concentration shattered. He hit the stone floor hard, dropping his falchion, his hands clutching desperately at the wooden shaft protruding from his leg.
"Who?!" the man screamed, his voice cracking with panic and pain. He blindly reached for a throwing knife on his belt, his eyes darting frantically into the shadows. "Show yourself, you coward!" The Vagabond didn't speak. He calmly drew a second arrow and nocked it.

Before the man could pull the knife, a blur of pitch-black fur and dark violet mist launched from the darkness. Shadow didn't bark. The wolf pup hit the man’s chest like a cannonball, its serrated jaws snapping shut around the killer's right wrist. The man shrieked as bone cracked under the pup’s incredible bite force. The throwing knife clattered uselessly to the floor. Shadow planted its heavy paws on the man’s sternum, pinning him down, its mismatched eyes staring directly into the killer's terrified face, a low, demonic growl rumbling in its chest.
The Vagabond stepped fully into the dim yellow light, his bow lowered, his right hand gripping a fresh, iron-tipped arrow from his quiver like a makeshift dagger. He walked toward the writhing man with slow, measured steps. "You..." the killer gasped, blood dripping from his lips, his eyes wide with a mixture of rage and terror. He looked at the Vagabond’s armor, recognizing the insignia.
"You're Alliance... We're on the same side!" "The man you stabbed in the back of the neck upstairs," the Vagabond said, his voice as cold and dead as the surrounding crypt. "Was he on your side?" The killer’s eyes darted nervously.
"He... he drew on me first! It was self-defense! Listen, man, the system is rigged. The beasts down here are too strong. We have to take what we need to survive! I have Lira.
I have potions. I'll give you everything, just call off the beast!" The Vagabond looked down at the pathetic, bleeding man. This was what the Great Land did to people. It stripped away the thin veneer of civilization, leaving only desperate, ravenous animals fighting over scraps.
"I'll take it anyway," the Vagabond said softly. He adjusted his grip on the arrow's wooden shaft, the iron tip glinting in the dim light. "No! Wait! The Alliance will—" The Vagabond didn't let him finish.
He drove the iron-tipped arrow downward, piercing the man’s throat, severing the vocal cords and the carotid artery in a single, mercifully quick thrust. The killer convulsed once, his eyes rolling back in his head, before going completely still. The silence rushed back into the antechamber, heavy and oppressive. Shadow released the dead man’s wrist, licking a drop of blood from its snout, and looked up at the Vagabond, waiting for the next command. The Vagabond knelt beside the corpse.
He felt no remorse. In this world, hesitation was death. He wiped the bloody arrow on the dead man’s leather cloak, returned it to his quiver, and began to search the body. He found a heavy leather pouch tied to the inside of the man's belt.
He opened it. Inside were twenty-five Lira coins, a small vial of red liquid that smelled heavily of copper, and finally—the prize. A heavy, jagged piece of dark iron. The lower half of a broken key. The Vagabond pulled the upper half of the broken key he had found on the assassinated mercenary upstairs. He held both pieces in his gloved hands. As he brought the jagged edges close to one another, the dark iron began to hum.
A faint, magnetic pull dragged the two pieces together. With a sharp clack, the metal fused perfectly, leaving no seam, no crack. It was whole again. A massive, terrifying iron key topped with the skull of a weeping king. The Vagabond unhooked the Magic Book from his hip. He didn't even need to open it.
As he held the book near the dead killer’s body, a chilling phenomenon occurred. The dead man’s chest began to glow with a sickly, pale blue light.
Wisps of spiritual energy—the accumulated souls of the monsters and mercenaries this man had killed—leaked from his lifeless mouth and chest. The energy swirled in the air for a second before violently rushing into the pages of the Vagabond’s closed book. The leather cover grew warm, vibrating with a surge of stolen power. The Vagabond opened the book. The glowing ink rapidly formed new text.

The Vagabond stared at the glowing number. +8 Spiritual Energy. Killing a massive, nine-foot Drowned Crypt-Warden had given him energy, but killing a human had yielded a massive, concentrated dose. The system wasn't just a tool; it was a meat grinder, designed to encourage the mercenaries to slaughter one another for faster progression. The Secret Alliance wanted a bloodbath. He closed the book, his jaw set in a hard, unforgiving line. He stood up, looking past the dead body and the iron chest, toward the far end of the antechamber. There, standing fifty feet tall, was a massive, terrifying door made of black steel, bound in thick iron chains. In the center of the door was a single, skull-shaped keyhole. The Sunken Sovereign was waiting. "Let's go, Shadow," the Vagabond said, his hand gripping the heavy iron key. "We have a vault to open."
