The Great Overthrow [A Souls-like LitRPG]

Chapter 8: Five Days of Ash

Survival in the Great Land was not a grand, sweeping act of heroism. It was a monotonous, grinding equation of caloric intake versus energy expenditure.

Day One.

The Vagabond awoke on the cold, hard stone of the sealed sanctuary. The ambient blue glow of the cave moss provided the only illumination. His chest ached with a dull, phantom throb—a lingering memory of his shattered ribs, fully repaired by the brutal mathematics of his only Complete Energy point.

He sat up slowly, his joints popping in the damp air. He checked his internal ledger.

Spiritual Energy: [0]. Complete Energy: [0].

The numbers were a cold bucket of water over his psyche. He was entirely mortal. A single misstep, a minor laceration from a rusted blade, or a bite from a feral hound would spell his absolute end.

Beside his thigh, a tiny ball of pitch-black fur shifted. The newborn Royal Beast let out a high-pitched, pathetic whine. It was roughly the size of a large river rat, entirely dependent, shivering slightly despite the stabilization of its core temperature.

The Vagabond didn't offer it affection. He offered it pragmatism. "You need fuel," he rasped, his voice echoing in the hermetically sealed cavern. "We both do."

He pushed himself up and walked to the subterranean stream that bisected the cavern. The water was crystal clear, freezing, and teeming with small, blind silver fish. Relying on his extraordinary agility [DEX: 18], he pinned four fish to the shallow riverbed with his hunting knife.

He sparked a small, smokeless fire using petrified roots. He ate his portion roasted. The newborn beast, driven by deep primal instinct, sank its tiny teeth into the raw silver scales of the remaining fish, eating messily. They had fuel. But they could not stay here forever.

Day Two.

The grinding phase began.

The Vagabond needed to rebuild his magical reserves, and he needed currency to afford a ranged weapon. The forty-six Lira in his pouch felt painfully insufficient.

He approached the solid stone wall where the entrance used to be. He pressed the heavy, petrified leather of the Magic Book against the granite. The latent magic recognized the artifact. With a deep, tectonic groan, the massive stone slab slid sideways, opening a fissure just wide enough for a man to slip through. The roar of the waterfall invaded the sanctuary.

Leaving the sleeping pup inside, the Vagabond slipped through the crack. The stone ground shut behind him, sealing the sanctuary flawlessly.

He immediately activated his Step of Silence. The skill consumed a small fraction of his naturally regenerating [Mana]—the blue fuel of the arcane that replenished over time. But Mana was merely tactical fuel; it could not knit flesh or mend bone. For absolute biological repair, he needed Spiritual Energy, which could only be harvested from the souls of the slain.

His first hunting run was an exercise in absolute paranoia. It took him two hours to find an isolated target: a mutated Scavenger Hound feeding on the rotting carcass of an Exile soldier.

The Vagabond dropped from a slate outcropping directly onto the hound’s back. Before the beast could yelp, he jerked its head to the side and drove his six-inch hunting knife into the base of its skull, severing the spinal cord. Zero damage taken.

Spiritual Energy Harvested: +4. Total: 4/10. He cut a rotting leather coin purse from the dead Exile soldier. Three tarnished Lira. Total Wealth: 49 Lira.

He returned to the sanctuary. He fished, he ate, he slept.

Day Three and Four.

Time blurred into a routine of calculated murder. The Vagabond made two short hunting runs each day, targeting only the weak and the dying. He assassinated a crippled Ash-Crawler. He ambushed another lone hound.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

Spiritual Energy Harvested: +4. Total: 8/10. Currency Looted: +5. Total Wealth: 54 Lira.

Eight points of Spiritual Energy. He stared at the ledger in the blue light of the cave. The grinding was yielding results, but it was agonizingly slow. Eight points were not enough to form a Complete Energy. He was still walking a tightrope without a net, but at least the net was taking shape.

Inside the cave, the changes in the Royal Beast were becoming impossible to ignore.

The biological laws of the Great Land did not apply to the lineage of the Mother of Shadows. Furthermore, the massive infusion of the Vagabond's Spiritual Energy on the night of its hatching had violently hyper-accelerated its early development.

By the end of the fourth day, it was no longer a rat-sized newborn. It had grown to the size of a sturdy, thick-chested hunting pup. Its black fur was thick and coarse, while the faint violet tips seemed to leave a slight, ethereal trail when it moved. Its teeth had become sharp, serrated instruments designed for tearing flesh.

"You need a designation," the Vagabond said, watching the pup effortlessly catch a silver fish from the freezing stream.

The pup snapped its massive head up. Its mismatched eyes—one molten gold, the other abyssal violet—locked onto the mercenary.

"Shadow," the Vagabond muttered.

The pup’s ears snapped forward. It let out a short, guttural huff, dropping the half-eaten fish, and trotted over to the Vagabond.

The mercenary picked up a broken, petrified branch from the cave floor. "Let's see what the Usurper's tyrant bred into your bones, Shadow."

He tossed the heavy stick across the cavern floor. It clattered loudly.

Shadow didn't eagerly chase it like a domesticated dog playing fetch. The wolf did not play. It lowered its head, its muscles coiling like steel springs. In an explosive burst of kinetic speed, the beast cleared the distance. Its jaws snapped around the petrified wood with a sickening CRACK. It didn't retrieve the stick; it obliterated it into splinters.

The Vagabond raised an eyebrow. Lethal intent. Good.

He stood up, deciding to test the beast's tactical intelligence. He raised his open left hand. "Stay," he commanded softly.

Shadow froze instantly, its eyes locked onto the Vagabond’s hand.

The Vagabond moved behind a large stalagmite, breaking the line of sight. He waited for ten seconds. He heard no clicking of claws. The beast held its position with military discipline.

He stepped out and pointed sharply toward a dark corner of the cave. "Flank."

Shadow didn't run in a straight line. The beast darted to the side, hugging the cavern wall, using the darkness as a cloak, until it reached the designated corner, instantly turning to face the Vagabond, ready to strike an unseen enemy's blind spot.

A grim, genuine smile touched the corners of the Vagabond's scarred lips. The wolf inherently understood the advanced geometry of tactical combat. It was a weapon, not a pet.

Day Five.

The Vagabond stood near the sealed entrance, packing his meager belongings. He sharpened the hunting knife one last time. He checked his internal ledger.

He looked down at Shadow. The wolf pup was standing by the stone wall, sniffing the microscopic crack. It barely reached the Vagabond's knee, but it was fiercely alert.

"Fish won't sustain you for long, Shadow," the Vagabond said quietly. "If you're going to grow into a terror, you need to consume the corrupted flesh and spiritual essence of the monsters outside. We are leaving the sanctuary."

He pressed the Magic Book to the granite wall. The stone ground open, welcoming the heavy, gray smog of the Great Land.

The Vagabond stepped out, the ash swirling around his ruined boots. He checked the weight of the fifty-four Lira in his pouch. The metallic scent in the wind had grown stronger over the last few days, carrying the maddening smell of old incense.

He pointed his knife toward the desolate horizon.

"Keep your head down, Shadow," the Vagabond whispered into the smog. "It's time to find the Mad Merchant. We are buying steel."

And somewhere, miles away, hidden deep within the drifting ash and the rusted ruins of the Great Land... the Mad Merchant had already begun to smile.
