The Great Overthrow [A Souls-like LitRPG]

Chapter 5: The Tyrant’s Nest

The Royal Forest did not naturally give way to clearings; it had to be violently hollowed out.

As the Vagabond crept deeper into the abyssal dark, the towering obsidian trunks began to warp and bend outward, as if physically repelled by a localized epicenter of immense pressure. The necrotic green fungi faded, replaced by the deep, pulsating, crystalline blue glow he had seen from afar.

He stepped through a jagged archway of petrified roots and entered the Sacred Nursery.

It was a crater, nearly a hundred yards across, sunken into the earth. The walls of the depression were lined with massive, jagged geodes of raw, unrefined mana crystal. They jutted from the soil like the broken teeth of a subterranean leviathan, casting harsh, azure shadows across the floor.

The air here was radically different. It was freezing, yet it crackled with static electricity that made the hairs on the Vagabond’s arms stand on end. The smell of rot was gone, replaced entirely by the sharp, metallic tang of pure ozone and the musky, overpowering scent of an apex predator.

In the absolute center of the crater lay the nest.

It was not woven from twigs or leaves. It was a fortress constructed from shattered petrified logs, pulverized boulders, and the crushed, twisted remains of heavily armored Capital Knights who had foolishly wandered too close over the centuries.

And resting atop this bed of ruin was the Mother of Shadows.

The Vagabond’s breath caught in his throat. He stopped moving entirely, his muscles locking in a state of primal paralysis.

She was gigantic. If she were to stand, her shoulder would easily clear the height of a two-story tavern. Her fur was a shimmering, impossible mixture of midnight black and frost-bitten silver. She was curled into a massive crescent, her head resting on her front paws. With every slow, drawn-out exhalation, a visible wave of freezing mist washed over the crater floor, causing frost to bloom rapidly on the crystal formations before melting away as she inhaled.

Scars crisscrossed her snout and flanks—pale, hairless ravines that spoke of ancient, cataclysmic wars against things far worse than Exiled Soldiers.

The Vagabond’s eyes moved past the terrifying maw of the sleeping god, tracing the curve of her belly. There, nestled securely among the crushed gold breastplates and soft silver fur, were the eggs.

There were three of them. They were massive, easily the size of a master-crafted iron anvil, and covered in a thick, leathery hide rather than a brittle shell. Two of the eggs were a dull, lifeless grey, blending into the shadows.

But the third...

The third egg was alive. It thrummed with a dark, sapphire-blue aura that pulsed in perfect synchronicity with the Vagabond’s own racing heartbeat. The heavy, magical frequency radiating from it was intoxicating. It was a royal beast of the highest pedigree, waiting to be bound.

He had to move.

The Vagabond reached under his cloak, shielding the dim light of the pages, and checked the Magic Book.

Four percent. He had less than two minutes before his footsteps would ring out like hammer strikes on an anvil.

He unclasped his sword belt entirely, laying it silently on the soft moss at the edge of the crater. The weapon was dead weight here; if the Mother woke, steel would not save him. He needed absolute mobility. He tightened the straps of his leather jerkin, took one final, agonizingly slow breath, and stepped into the crater.

The Step of Silence swallowed the crunch of the frost beneath his boots.

He descended the slope, navigating the maze of jagged crystals and discarded, rusted weaponry. The closer he got to the Mother, the colder the air became. It bit through his tunic, numbing his fingers and biting at the fresh scar tissue on his left shoulder.

Fifty paces. Thirty paces. Ten.

He stood at the edge of the nest. The sheer, physical pressure radiating from the sleeping beast felt like standing at the edge of a cliff in a hurricane. Her breathing was a rhythmic hurricane, blasting him with sub-zero mist that crystallized the sweat on his forehead.

He stepped up onto the perimeter of the nest, his left boot resting cautiously on a crushed silver breastplate. The magic vacuum beneath his sole maintained the absolute silence.

He reached his arms out. The blue egg was nestled securely against the Mother's thick fur. The Vagabond leaned forward, his chest inches from the beast’s flank. He could feel the terrifying, thunderous beating of her heart.

He placed his gloved hands on either side of the leathery, pulsing shell.

It was warm—shockingly warm compared to the freezing air—and it vibrated with a wild, untamed energy. He slid his fingers underneath the heavy base of the egg, gripping it firmly.

He needed to lift it, step backward, and flee.

He took a breath, bracing his core, and pulled the egg upward.

It was staggeringly heavy. It weighed at least sixty pounds. The sudden, immense shift in his center of gravity threw him off balance. To keep from falling forward onto the sleeping Mother, the Vagabond instinctively stepped back, putting his full, combined weight—his body and the heavy egg—onto his right leg.

His right boot came down hard on a brittle, hollowed-out mana crystal hidden beneath a layer of frost.

At that exact millisecond, a cold, mechanical jolt shot through his spine.

The vacuum vanished.

The hollow crystal beneath his heel shattered under the immense weight.

CRACK.

In the absolute, dead silence of the subterranean crater, the sound of the shattering crystal echoed like a siege cannon discharging in a cathedral.

The Vagabond froze, the heavy egg clutched against his chest. His blood turned to ice.

The Mother of Shadows stopped breathing.

The freezing mist hanging in the air suddenly evaporated. The ambient temperature of the crater plummeted so violently that the Vagabond’s breath instantly turned to a flurry of snow before his face.

Slowly, deliberately, the massive beast lifted her head.

The Vagabond didn't move. He couldn't. The sheer terror radiating from the creature pinned him to the spot, a primal override shutting down his motor functions.

The Mother turned her head. A singular, colossal eye snapped open, a mere three feet from the Vagabond’s face.

It was an eye of molten gold, split by a vertical, bottomless black pupil. There was no feral confusion in that gaze; there was ancient, calculating intelligence, and an absolute, world-ending rage. She looked at the tiny, insignificant creature standing in her nest, and she looked at the sapphire egg clutched in his arms.

A low, vibrating growl began deep within her chest. It wasn't a sound; it was a localized earthquake. The sheer frequency of it shattered the smaller mana geodes around the crater, raining blue glass down upon the nest.

Survival instinct finally shattered the Vagabond’s paralysis.

"Move," his mind screamed.

He didn't try to draw a weapon. He didn't try to cast a spell. Clamping the heavy egg against his chest with his left arm, he threw his entire body backward, launching himself off the crushed breastplate just as the Mother’s jaws snapped shut exactly where his torso had been.

The sound of her teeth colliding was like two iron vault doors slamming together. The concussive force of the air escaping her jaws physically blasted the Vagabond backward.

He hit the frost-covered ground rolling, the heavy egg bruising his ribs, but he didn't let go. He scrambled to his feet, ignoring the screaming protests of his depleted stamina.

Behind him, the Mother of Shadows rose to her full, terrifying height.

She threw her massive head back, and the Royal Forest truly woke up. The roar she unleashed was cataclysmic. It tore through the canopy, shattering petrified branches and shaking the very bedrock of the Great Land miles away. It was a promise of absolute, inescapable death.

The Vagabond ran. He didn't look back to retrieve his sword belt. He sprinted up the crater's incline, his boots tearing through the moss, clutching the pulsing blue jewel of the tyrant to his chest.

The hunt had begun.
