The Great Overthrow [A Souls-like LitRPG]

Chapter 2: Oracle of the Weeping Temple

For three hours, the Vagabond walked northwest, his boots carving a solitary, dragging path through the endless dunes of pulverized bone and ash.

The Great Land did not change; it merely festered in different ways. The further he moved from the site of his last skirmish, the denser the smog became. It hung in the air like dirty wool, limiting his visibility to no more than forty paces. The cold had deepened, biting through the seams of his leather jerkin, seeking the fresh, hyper-accelerated scar tissue on his left shoulder.

He moved with hyper-vigilance, his right hand resting perpetually on the pommel of his sword.

His internal ledger was unforgiving. His stamina had recovered during the walk, but his magical reserves were starved. Two Spiritual Energies. It was a pathetic sum. If a wandering pack of corrupted hounds ambushed him now, he would have to rely entirely on cold steel and perfect parries. One deep bite, one lacerated tendon, and the Magic Book would have no fuel to stitch him back together.

A silhouette broke through the grey fog ahead.

The Vagabond stopped instantly, lowering his stance. He slipped behind the rusted, half-buried husk of a massive siege shield left over from a war no one remembered.

It wasn't a soldier. It was a Scavenger Hound.

The beast was the size of a starved bear, its body entirely devoid of fur. Its skin was a sickly, translucent grey, stretched so tightly over its protruding ribs that the dark, sluggish pumping of its organs was visible beneath. Its jaw was unhinged, dripping corrosive, black saliva that hissed as it hit the ash.

It was sniffing the air, its blind, milky eyes rolling wildly. It was smelling the fresh blood that had soaked into the Vagabond's tattered cloak from the earlier fight.

Distance: Twenty paces. Threat level: High mobility. Armor: None.

The Vagabond didn’t wait for it to howl and summon a pack. He took the initiative.

He lunged from behind the iron shield, covering the distance in three explosive, stamina-draining strides. The hound snapped its head toward the sound, its jaw snapping shut with the force of a bear trap, and lunged forward to meet him.

The Vagabond slid on his knees through the powdery ash, dodging beneath the beast’s lethal leap. As the heavy body sailed over him, he angled his sword upward, letting the hound’s own terrifying momentum do the work. The medium steel blade sliced cleanly through the creature’s soft underbelly, tearing it open from sternum to groin.

A shower of hot, foul-smelling organs and black blood rained down on the ash. The hound crashed behind him, twitching violently before going completely still.

The Vagabond stood up, wiping the corrosive saliva from his leather spaulder before it could eat through the material. He didn't waste a second. He pulled out his hunting knife and approached the corpse. Hounds didn't carry Lira, but they had swallowed things that belonged to those who did.

He drove his knife into the beast's ruptured stomach lining and twisted. Amidst the half-digested bones and rusted metal fragments, he found a small, partially dissolved leather pouch. He ripped it open.

Seven tarnished brass coins spilled into his gloved hand.

Seven Lira.

He wiped the stomach acid off the coins on the hound's hide and added them to his pouch. Twenty-two Lira in total.

He drew the heavy, imposing tome from his cloak. The Magic Book hummed to life as the pale blue wisps of the hound's potent Spiritual Energy drifted into the air, instantly sucked into the parchment. The ink boiled and rewrote the ledger.

Ten points. He was solvent again. He let out a long, slow breath, feeling a fraction of the tension leave his neck.

He put the book away and continued northwest.

Within an hour, the oppressive, suffocating smog began to physically thin. The Vagabond noticed the change in the air first—the taste of sulfur was abruptly cut by the scent of damp earth and old, cold stone.

Looming out of the mist was a monolithic rock formation, a jagged mountain of dark slate that seemed to pierce the low clouds. At its base was a narrow, jagged fissure, barely wide enough for a man in armor to slip through sideways. Faint, bioluminescent blue light pulsed from within.

A Rest.

The Vagabond squeezed through the crevice. The transition was violent in its suddenness. The howling wind of the Great Land was silenced the moment he crossed the threshold, replaced by an absolute, profound stillness. The air inside was warm and pure.

He had entered a massive subterranean cavern. The walls were choked with thick patches of glowing, pale blue moss, casting long, serene shadows. This was the Weeping Temple.

In the center of the cavern lay the ruins of a grand, ancient cathedral, its stone pillars shattered and reclaimed by the earth. At the heart of the ruins stood a colossal statue of a forgotten king, sitting upon a throne of stone. The statue had been decapitated, the head nowhere to be seen. From the jagged stone of the severed neck, crystal-clear, pure water bubbled up and trickled down the massive chest, pooling into a shallow basin at the statue's feet.

Drip... drip... drip...

It sounded exactly like quiet, eternal sobbing.

The Vagabond walked toward the basin, the tension finally leaving his muscles. He unclasped his sword belt, laying the weapon on a smooth stone bench, and sat down heavily. Safe zones were absolute. The ambient spiritual radiation of the Great Land could not penetrate the luminous moss. He closed his eyes, allowing his stamina bar to fully replenish, his breathing returning to a slow, restful rhythm.

"The blood of the Usurper's dogs stains your cloak, but you do not smell like them."

The voice was raspy, echoing off the cavern walls like dry leaves scraping against stone.

The Vagabond’s eyes snapped open. His hand darted to his sword hilt, but he did not draw it.

Stepping out from behind the massive pedestal of the Weeping Statue was an old man. He wore tattered, filthy grey robes that dragged along the wet stone. A thick, stained linen cloth was wrapped tightly around his eyes, blindfolding him completely, yet his head tilted precisely toward the Vagabond’s seated form.

"Peace, wanderer," the Seer croaked, raising two frail, empty hands with painfully long fingernails. The blind man took a deep breath through a crooked nose, his chest rattling. "Ah... yes. Under the smell of ash and hound's blood... there it is. The scent of antique gold. The heavy, un-tarnished weight of the Broken Crown."

The Vagabond remained completely silent. His face was a mask of cold indifference.

"You are not a scavenger," the Seer concluded, shuffling closer to the water's edge. He dipped a trembling cup made of bone into the pure water and took a sip. "You are the scalpel they sent. You seek the Royal Forest."

"Tell me what guards the nests," the Vagabond said. His voice was low, carrying a rough, unused grit.

The Seer smiled, revealing a row of blackened, rotting teeth. "The forest is a graveyard of ambitions, Mercenary. The Usurper King keeps his prizes locked deep within the sacred nurseries, guarded by the Executioner of the Roots. If you bypass him, you will find four ancient eggs. They do not hatch for the weak. They require a soul binding."

The old man pointed a crooked finger toward the dark entrance of the cave.

"Choose your burden carefully. Will you claim the Giant Lion? It is a beast of absolute, cataclysmic force. It will shatter the shields of the First Kingdom, but it is loud, and it is slow."

The Vagabond analyzed the option instantly. Path of the Iron Vanguard. Not his style. He didn't have the heavy armor to act as the anvil to the Lion's hammer.

"Perhaps the Phoenix?" the Seer continued, his voice dropping to an awe-filled whisper. "A creature of the High Weavers. It offers the fire of rebirth, healing your flesh in the heat of battle."

Path of the High Weaver. Useless. The Vagabond’s mana pool was barely large enough to cast a kinetic push. He couldn't sustain a magical beast.

"The Armored Goat," the Seer offered. "An impenetrable fortress of iron-hard wool and bone. Nothing pierces it."

Defense is just delayed defeat, the Vagabond thought. He rejected it.

"Or..." The Seer tilted his head, the blindfold staring directly into the Vagabond's eyes. "...will you seek the Giant Wolf? A creature of the shadows. It does not offer brute force or magical healing. It offers unmatched, terrifying speed, tactical flanking, and the Call of the Pack."

The Vagabond stared at the crystal-clear water dripping from the statue.

Speed. Tactics. Exploitation of blind spots.

It was the ultimate tool for the Master of Adaptation. He needed a phantom on the battlefield, a distraction that could tear out a throat while he severed a hamstring.

His choice was locked.

The Vagabond stood up. He grabbed his sword belt, buckling it tightly around his waist, and pulled his dark cloak over his shoulders. He didn't thank the Seer. He didn't confirm his choice. He simply walked past the old man, heading toward the narrow crevice that led back to the horrors of the Great Land.

"The Executioner of the Roots waits at the forest threshold," the Seer called out, his raspy voice echoing in the Vagabond's wake. "His axe is heavy, Mercenary... Do not let him hear your footsteps."

The Vagabond slipped through the rock. The bitter, freezing wind of the wastes hit him instantly.

He looked to the northwest. There, looming through the grey smog, stood the towering, pitch-black trunks of the Royal Forest.

He rested his hand on his hilt, and walked into the dark.
