Chapter 245: The Omen of World War

At the same time, inside the church, several uninvited guests had already arrived.

They were dressed in simple casual clothes—Jean Grey (Phoenix), Ororo Munroe (Storm), Scott Summers (Cyclops), and Logan (Wolverine) of the X-Men.

The five of them entered, breaking the church's original silence.

The main hall of the church was very large and empty. The walls on both sides had already collapsed, leaving only a few main beams supporting the ceiling.

Sunlight poured in, making the place very bright.

The moment they entered the abandoned church, Logan could not help frowning and rubbed his nose.

Just like his nickname, Wolverine, he not only had an indestructible Adamantium skeleton, but also beast-like senses.

His hearing, sight, and smell far surpassed ordinary people's.

The foul stench here was far too sharp for him.

Fortunately, he quickly adjusted to it. Perhaps the environments he had experienced in the past had been even worse than this.

"So, the kid is really here?" Logan looked around. Dust floated everywhere, and layers of torn cloth hung down from the beams, blocking much of their view.

"The Professor said his last known location was here, and he hasn't moved," Scott Summers' brow furrowed tightly behind his ruby-quartz visor.

He felt that something was off. It was far too strange.

A mutant had assassinated the President. No matter the reason, after failing, he had not chosen to flee Washington. Instead, he had stayed here without leaving.

Was he out of his mind, or was there another conspiracy?

Scott strongly leaned toward the latter.

"No matter what, he's innocent," Ororo said softly, both hands in the pockets of her black coat. There was helplessness in her gentle gaze. "Someone is using him to stir up conflict between humans and mutants."

"This is no longer a conflict; it's a war," Jean Grey shook her head, looking at the bigger picture. "We have to find him before everyone else and uncover the truth. Otherwise, once this disaster begins, it will become a global catastrophe."

The mutant situation might not look very good.

But if it truly became a war that had to be fought, humanity might not necessarily win.

Because the mutants had several living nuclear weapons.

Once the U.S. government took the lead and started a global war against mutants, it would surely trigger resistance from mutants all over the world.

There was no need to even mention how many ordinary people and mutants would die.

Just among the top mutant powers, there were Magneto and the Brotherhood of Mutants, Professor X and the X-Men, as well as Emma Frost, the White Queen of the Hellfire Club, the Black Queen, and others.

If they were forced by crisis to unite, then a war of that scale would be a disaster for every species living on Earth.

Just imagining that scene made Jean Grey shudder.

"But that kid keeps appearing and disappearing. We can't find him at all," Logan said. He knew how serious the matter was, but what made him impatient was that they simply could not locate him.

With that abnormal teleportation ability, if he wanted to hide or escape, ordinary methods would never catch him.

"Have a little patience, pal."

At this moment, it was actually Logan's romantic rival and old enemy, Cyclops, who spoke up to calm him down.

It showed that Scott could display proper leadership at critical moments.

Logan only curled his lip at this and did not mock him.

Just then, Logan casually raised his head. A flash of blue light passed through his vision, and his expression changed.

"Hey, kid. Stop running."

Logan's words immediately caught the attention of Jean Grey and the other X-Men. They all followed his gaze.

Sure enough, on the beam above to the left, a blue-skinned mutant in ragged clothes had appeared.

It was Nightcrawler.

At this moment, Nightcrawler was crouched on the beam with both hands and feet, looking down at Logan and the others. His face was filled with helplessness, despair, and caution.

"I… I didn't want to do it."

His voice sounded very young.

The X-Men exchanged a glance. Storm was the first to speak, her voice gentle as she tried to comfort the helpless young mutant.

"Hey, we're not here to catch you. We're your people. We're here to help you, okay?"

"Don't be afraid. We won't hurt you."

"Come down first. We can face this together."

"NO! I don't trust you!"

Those words instead provoked the young mutant. He shouted in agitation and instinctively tried to use his ability to teleport away.

But Jean Grey had already been prepared. She activated her telekinesis first.

Caught off guard, Nightcrawler was pulled down. After landing on the ground, he still wanted to resist, but Jean immediately walked quickly up to him.

She looked gently into Nightcrawler's eyes, using her telepathic power to calm him.

Yet, the moment their eyes met, Jean froze. She seemed to see a flicker of black light within the young mutant's eyes—deep and pitch black.

Time seemed to stop at that moment. It felt as if a very long time had passed, yet also as if it had only been an illusion.

By the time she came back to herself, Nightcrawler still looked cautious and helpless.

"Hey, kid. We need to have a proper talk."

Logan's voice sounded beside her, leaving Jean no time to think too much about the strange thing that had just happened.

"I'm sorry... I really didn't mean to do it," Nightcrawler sobbed.

"You—"

Logan was about to say something, but Jean's expression suddenly changed. She sharply turned her head toward the outside of the church.

"Not good. They came so fast."

…

After the target was found, the FBI, Secret Service, and National Guard immediately responded and deployed personnel.

Police cars and military Humvees set off at once toward the located area.

Armed helicopters and fighter jets were already patrolling the sky.

The large-scale movement frightened many Washington residents who saw it along the way. They took out their phones one after another, recording and posting videos online.

"Oh my God, these people have gone crazy."

"Shit, I saw a formation of F-22 fighter jets fly overhead."

"And Apache gunships."

"Did they find the mutant who assassinated the President?"

"I think so. Otherwise, they wouldn't make this kind of move."

"Those damned mutant bastards should hurry up and get caught. They should all be found, locked up, and thrown into prison."

For a time, a large number of posts and photos appeared on social media, immediately drawing countless people's attention.

All of America was watching.

If not for the short amount of time that had passed, the news would probably have spread to every country in the world by now.

After all, the President of the strongest country in the world being assassinated was no small piece of news.

Amid people's heated discussion, large numbers of armed Humvees, tanks, fully armed National Guard soldiers, Secret Service agents, and others surrounded the church that had been abandoned for who knew how many years.

The highest commander of this arrest operation was the FBI's Washington D.C. director, personally appointed by the President.

He arrived at the scene. Aside from him, there was also an Army major general and the director of the USSS under the Department of Homeland Security.
