Chapter 182: The Adeptus Custodes
Because of magic, Matthew's overall training direction had not changed, but he no longer had any requirements when it came to where he trained.
Aside from studying magical knowledge and modern knowledge, if he wanted to train his physique, all he had to do was open a Mirror Dimension space.
Then he could set up a gravity mode for himself.
A little cosplay of Goku and the others from Dragon Ball.
That method really was very good.
When it came to tempering the body, the effect was clearly obvious.
Training under extreme gravity put all-round pressure on his muscles, internal organs, bones, and everything else. The workout effect far surpassed normal weighted training equipment.
If he wanted to return to the base, he could just open a portal and go back.
The reason Matthew had gone to such great lengths to learn magic before was exactly this. In every way, it was simply too convenient.
Without magic, how was Matthew supposed to live?
So Matthew had, rather rarely, begun to enjoy life.
He was now living on Long Island's Gold Coast in New York.
It was an estate of around twelve acres.
A large Tudor-style villa.
It came with wide lawns, gardens, and a swimming pool.
The lawn extended downward to a private beach, made of fine white sand, where outsiders could not enter.
There was also a private wooden pier, a boathouse, and yacht berths.
The woods were dense, the privacy was extreme, and high walls surrounded everything.
In addition, there were butlers, maids, and more.
These butlers, maids, security personnel, and others were all prepared by Matthew's exclusive team. This team had around three hundred people and had been personally selected by Karla to serve Matthew.
Their overall authority was very high.
As long as Matthew gave an order, this team would resolve it for him.
Their efficiency was astonishing.
In Karla's eyes, this was the future royal service team exclusively belonging to Matthew, the emperor.
What else could Matthew say? Of course he accepted it.
Matthew enjoyed meticulous care and finally understood how extravagant the life of a top billionaire could be. Basically, food was brought to his mouth, and clothes were placed into his hands.
There was also a security team.
This security team was only ordinary security. On Karla's side, she had already begun preparing to draw people from the Astartes and Raven Warbands to form a Adeptus Custodes that belonged exclusively to Matthew.
This guard would only obey Matthew's orders.
And they had to be powerful enough, elite enough, highly loyal, and highly obedient.
The first batch of guards would probably not have many members, roughly around thirteen people.
They had to be elites among elites from the two Warbands, aces among aces.
Karla had already discussed this with Reacher, Natasha, and several other senior members.
None of the senior members had any objections.
Matthew knew about this. Although he felt that perhaps, maybe, it might not really be necessary, he did not object.
After all, even someone as powerful as Odin, King of the Gods, had his own personal guards.
Perhaps this was the dignity of a king.
As for Carrie, Matthew had transferred her to Midtown High because Midtown High did not have as many messy issues.
Bullying existed in every school. The only difference was whether there was more or less of it.
Midtown High had it too, but he had specifically placed Carrie in Gwen's class to solve that problem.
Gwen was outstanding in every version.
She never lacked gentleness or empathy, but when faced with injustice, she could also show toughness.
This came from the good upbringing George Stacy and his wife Helen had given her from childhood.
There was also George's position as New York Police Commissioner, which gave Gwen confidence.
Letting Carrie come into contact with Gwen, find the bright points in her, become friends with her, and heal the scars in her heart was exactly what Matthew had intended.
And reality turned out exactly as Matthew had imagined.
When the timid and introverted Carrie transferred schools, she did not encounter bullying, but she did receive many curious looks.
The lively and enthusiastic Gwen was one of them.
And Gwen's observation skills were excellent. After all, she had a police officer for a father, and under that subtle influence, she far surpassed her peers in this regard.
She immediately noticed the scars on Carrie's body that had not yet disappeared.
That instantly stirred Gwen's sympathy and anger.
So she deliberately approached Carrie and drew the truth out of her.
Carrie was no longer an ordinary person now.
The energy hidden within her body had not fully awakened, but she could already easily sense goodwill and malice from others.
Gwen was like a warm little sun, making Carrie feel fond of her.
So Carrie told Gwen about her experiences.
Matthew had never made Carrie try to hide these things. Instead, just like with those Black Widows who had once been hurt, he told her not to forget, but to face that past directly.
Matthew could have erased the scars in her heart with magic—simply by altering her memories—but he chose not to.
Gwen gained Carrie's trust, and Carrie held almost nothing back when telling her about her past, because Matthew had told her that when she trusted someone, she could tell that person her past without reservation.
Carrie trusted Matthew, and she also trusted Gwen, so she spoke.
For example, she told her that she had an extreme religious mother, that she had suffered violent abuse since childhood, and that she had special supernatural powers.
She also told her that some time ago, a demon called Lilith had possessed her mother, killed many people, and tried to awaken her power, before Matthew saved her.
Then he brought her from Chicago to New York and transferred her to a new school.
Gwen listened in complete bewilderment, as if hearing something from another world.
Moments later, excitement took over. After school, she pulled Carrie to a secluded spot and watched with her own eyes as Carrie summoned a ball of flame out of thin air.
She believed her.
Because of this, Gwen felt deep sympathy and affection for the pitiful Carrie, and she immediately decided to treat Carrie as her best friend.
She even confidently declared that she would help Carrie hide her identity.
In today's society, anyone with abilities beyond ordinary people would often be labeled as a mutant.
Gwen knew very well that if Carrie's ability was discovered, she might be rejected or isolated.
Gwen's patience and kindness completely won Carrie over, and the two quickly developed a deep friendship. Over the weekend, Gwen dragged Carrie out shopping and gave her wardrobe a complete makeover, declaring that her style was far too old-fashioned for a sixteen-year-old. It was during this outing that they ran into George and Finley at noon.
The two girls had an absolute blast that Saturday. They went shopping, visited Disneyland, rode countless attractions, and enjoyed plenty of delicious food.
Carrie wore a smile throughout the entire day. For the first time, she truly felt the beauty of the world around her.
So, after receiving Matthew's permission, Carrie invited Gwen to visit her home the following Sunday.
Gwen was delighted and readily agreed.
What she hadn't expected, however, was for Carrie to arrive at her doorstep in a luxury car to pick her up—complete with a personal driver.
Gwen did not really care about car brands, nor did she understand them very well.
But from the car's exterior and interior, she could tell that it was an expensive luxury car.
Today, Gwen wore a light-gray fitted cropped knit camisole with an off-white loose thin linen shirt over it. For her lower half, she wore high-waisted light-blue slightly wide-leg jeans.
Carrie wore a cream-white square-neck short-sleeved knit top and cream-white high-waisted wide-leg casual trousers with a smooth drape.
These were clothes Gwen had helped Carrie choose when they went shopping yesterday. The two sixteen-year-old girls looked youthful and beautiful.
"Wow. Your brother must be super rich." Gwen touched the car's interior, then turned to the smiling Carrie and said with certainty.
The black stretch limousine glided smoothly along the asphalt road of Long Island's North Shore Gold Coast.
