Chapter 161: The Manhattan Incident That Shook the World
"Aha, found it. That was truly difficult."
Needy ignored Jennifer's complaints and focused entirely on reading the memories. Fortunately, it did not take long for her to find what she needed.
Luckily, they had prepared in advance.
The magical barrier Matthew had set up beforehand contained special suppression magic aimed at darkness.
The moment these fools stepped into the base, they were immediately suppressed and locked down, completely cutting off their ability to communicate with or draw from the darkness.
Simply put, the zealots were cut off from darkness at the most fundamental level.
Without the support of darkness, and with Needy backed by the authority of the base's magical barrier, reading their memories was far too easy.
After finishing the memory reading, a grave look flashed across Needy's delicate face. She even lost her voice for a moment.
"Damn it."
She stood up and abruptly turned around.
Bucky, wearing power armor, walked to her side.
"Is it serious?"
"Very serious."
Needy felt the weight of the situation. Her voice turned solemn. "Kaecilius is going to open a passage connected to Hell in Manhattan, New York."
"He wants to release demons and summon them to turn Earth into purgatory. They plan to sacrifice the souls of the entire city and establish a permanent Gate of Hell."
"Can Kaecilius do that?"
Bucky was equally shocked when he heard Needy's words. The soldiers of the two warbands were the same, but everyone still remained silent.
Their discipline told them that at a time like this, they had to stay steady.
Needy shook her head. "He can't do it alone, but according to this guy's memories, Kaecilius is very confident. It should have something to do with Dormammu."
"The creatures appearing in other parts of the world are only appetizers, meant to draw away part of our strength and Kamar-Taj's."
"The real target is Manhattan."
"And I think things may have already started over there."
As Needy spoke, sure enough, information from the Information Department came through the satellite earpieces worn by her, Bucky, Karla, Melina, and the others.
"An abnormal situation has appeared in Manhattan. Kamar-Taj says there are extremely strong dark-magic energy fluctuations there. We have also found that the frequency of emergency calls in Manhattan has skyrocketed. Surveillance footage shows that large numbers of people seem to be affected."
"A large number of violent incidents have already occurred, but for now, there are no casualties."
"Commander Reacher and Natasha, along with twelve Masters of the Mystic Arts from Kamar-Taj, have already gone to Manhattan and are stopping the violent incidents."
"They need support."
The moment the information came through, Needy looked toward the senior members without hesitation. "We need to move immediately."
"Agreed." Bucky and Melina nodded at once.
Karla, however, spoke up. "I'll stay behind and coordinate the overall situation."
With what was happening over there, having one more or one less of her would not make much difference.
She could remain in the rear and mobilize the resources and forces in New York. If necessary, she could instantly deploy them to cooperate with the two warbands.
Of course, that was only for a crisis situation.
If the situation remained under control, she would not casually mobilize that armed force.
"Good."
Needy immediately tried to open a portal to Manhattan, New York. But she suddenly discovered that some unknown force was interfering on that side, making her unable to open it.
Just as Needy frowned, sparks suddenly erupted in the air before her, drawing a huge circle.
It was large enough for seven or eight people to pass through side by side, and more than ten meters tall.
Needy immediately realized that BOSS had acted.
BOSS really had been paying attention the whole time.
"Go, go, go!"
The moment the portal appeared, the other side seemed to be a street. They could see many people fleeing in panic, and hear screams, car horns, roars, and crying.
Bucky immediately charged out without hesitation, and the other soldiers followed closely behind him.
Only after everyone had poured through the portal did it slowly disappear.
Karla was left behind alone.
Karla's gaze swept over Blackheart, who had been watching the show the entire time. His expression tightened, and he raised both hands. One of them was still holding a tall glass, making him look rather ridiculous.
"I've been very obedient," Blackheart said, looking perfectly well-behaved.
The corner of Karla's lips curved. Her gaze moved over the four unconscious zealots on the ground. Then she drew the energy gun from her waist and pulled the trigger.
…
Manhattan, New York, could be called the financial center of the city.
At the same time, it was also an area where crime happened frequently.
Heaven and hell existed together.
The rich and the poor lived in Manhattan. It was deeply ironic.
Yet on this night, Manhattan welcomed a terrifying disaster. Whether rich or poor, everyone suffered the most horrifying attack of their lives.
They all saw something that should never have existed.
Demons.
At night, the streetlights of New York, the city that never slept, shone brightly. But high above the sky was a massive window that no one had noticed.
It was a huge vortex formed by swirling black-purple energy, and at the center of the vortex was a scarlet world. Terrifying roars and shrieks came from the other side.
One hideous demon after another broke out through that window.
Laughing with greed, they rushed toward Manhattan below, hunting those sweet and delicious prey.
None of the demons could believe there would come a day when they could actually descend upon Earth.
They did not think about the reason.
They only wanted to taste delicious food.
Whether flesh or soul.
Unfortunately, the moment they set foot on Earth, death arrived with them.
Terrifying orange-yellow and azure energy beams poured from the ground into the sky like a storm.
Dense beams of energy struck the demons' bodies, instantly piercing through them.
And they were extremely precise. Almost none missed.
Of course, the demonic tide was far too numerous, blotting out the sky. Even if one wanted to miss, it was difficult.
Corpses fell from the sky.
They smashed into buildings, onto streets, and over cars.
A carnival of hunting had turned into a slaughter.
Only then did the demons discover in shock that two extremely terrifying forces had appeared on the ground.
On one side were armored soldiers clad in heavy, ancient-looking armor filled with a sacred presence. On the other was a force of about a hundred, entirely made up of women wearing windbreaker combat uniforms.
Most of the armored soldiers formed squads of two or three, covering every corner of Manhattan in extremely standard combat formations as they faced the demons' assault.
They were the most violent army. Their heavy armor could withstand any attack. Even the demons' black magic and temptations could not harm them in the slightest.
Meanwhile, the women in windbreaker combat uniforms became the most beautiful sight on the battlefield.
They were elegant assassins.
They were the sharpest daggers.
Though their numbers were few, they could move through the Manhattan battlefield with precision, cooperating with the armored soldiers to slaughter demons while also protecting innocent civilians and targeting criminals who had chosen crime after being consumed by fear.
This night was destined to shock the entire world.
The names of the Astartes and Raven would also shake the globe.
