Chapter 78 78: Mephisto and Blackheart’s Twisted Father-Son Relationship
"Shut up, old man. That old guy was right—your attitude only makes people sick."
Blackheart gritted his teeth as he growled those words.
His expression twisted further with rage, becoming increasingly terrifying.
What Blackheart hated most was Mephisto's superior attitude, always speaking to him as though giving patient guidance from above.
Blackheart did not appreciate it in the slightest.
Mephisto let out what appeared to be a helpless sigh, but deep inside, there was only disappointment and indifference.
Disappointment that he had ultimately become enemies with the child he personally created.
And disappointment that this child's personality and way of thinking were deeply flawed.
He still needed to grow.
As for Blackheart's hatred toward him—
Mephisto was indifferent to it.
Once upon a time, Mephisto truly had cared for Blackheart, in the way a father cared for a son.
But compared to power and strength, that tiny bit of fatherly affection meant nothing.
He firmly believed that if he ever lost his power and authority, the first person to overthrow and kill him would be Blackheart.
So he would never relinquish his power.
Never relinquish his strength.
He would forever remain the ruler of Hell—
Forever standing above Blackheart.
"Can this little family drama between demon father and son finally be over now?"
After happily enjoying the spectacle from the side, Matthew finally became serious.
He had put in a great deal of effort to kill Mephisto.
And now, the time for harvest had finally arrived.
The souls of the three elemental demons were of decent quality, but they hadn't reached the standard required to light up a top-tier Devil Fruit.
Mephisto, however, would surely be enough. Matthew had no intention of letting his prey escape.
Rumble—!!
A crimson glow dyed Matthew's light brown eyes red as overwhelming willpower spread outward like a tangible force.
Above the sky, dark clouds began gathering and swirling under the influence of that monstrous aura.
Layers upon layers of black-red lightning intertwined wildly, roaring and exploding continuously.
The earth itself began trembling, shaking, and groaning.
Broken stones, flowers, grass, and fallen leaves all started dancing in the wind, rising into the air.
Mephisto was no weaker. Beneath the brim of his black hat, the seemingly cloudy eyes turned pitch black, with strands of scarlet flame flickering within them.
Darkness spread outward from him as the center, resisting Matthew's overwhelming presence.
At the point where the two auras collided, arcs of lightning exploded violently.
"Damn it, we can't stay here any longer!"
Old Carter, Johnny, and Roxanne all felt the terrifying pressure.
Carter immediately let out a low roar and dragged the two of them away. His movements were agile and powerful, not resembling an old man in the slightest.
As Johnny and Roxanne were pulled along, painful expressions appeared on their faces.
Johnny, in particular, began experiencing a strange transformation.
The flesh on his head flickered away at times, exposing a burning skull beneath, as though a terrifying demon could no longer wait to burst free from his body.
"Hold on, kid. Now's definitely not the time for that thing to come out and cause trouble."
Noticing Johnny's condition, old Carter immediately shouted in a low voice.
"I—I can't control it." Johnny growled back, his voice becoming deeper and rougher.
"You are the master of your body and your will! It is just a parasite in your shell! Suppress it! Tell it that you are the master!" Carter blew a whistle as he shouted.
"I'll try."
As the three spoke, the sound of a horse neighing rang out nearby. A powerful horse came galloping over from the distance and stopped in front of them.
"Get on!"
Carter smoothly mounted the horse, then pulled both Johnny and Roxanne up behind him before the horse immediately sprinted away at full speed.
As the three escaped, the trembling of the surrounding earth became even more violent.
Of course, they were not the only ones leaving.
Blackheart, who had been consumed by anger moments ago, instantly regained clarity after feeling the collision between Matthew and Mephisto's auras.
Reason returned to him.
Without the slightest hesitation, his figure faded into darkness and disappeared as well.
He felt that if those two truly started fighting, staying too close would probably get him caught in the crossfire.
Blackheart preferred to sit from a distance and watch the tiger fight, not to have the tiger swat him in the face while he watched.
With the onlookers gone, the house that had accompanied old Carter for countless years finally could no longer withstand the violent tremors and pressure from the clashing auras.
It collapsed.
Boom—!!
The instant the house caved in, Matthew made the first move.
His right fist turned pitch black instantly, and terrifying red-and-black lightning exploded. Several bolts of black lightning shot up from the ground.
Matthew's figure vanished, reappearing instantly before Mephisto's eyes.
He threw a punch straight at him.
Layers of air exploded apart along the way as shockwaves erupted outward.
Even before the punch landed, Mephisto already felt his soul consciousness being struck by an indescribable willpower.
If his soul had not been powerful enough, even a brief moment of distraction could have caused him to be struck directly by the attack.
"What astonishing willpower, child." Mephisto could not help but praise him.
He raised the cane in his right hand to block in front of himself, stopping the punch.
He could have dodged.
He could have used other methods to defend himself.
But the power behind Matthew's punch was extremely special—so special that Mephisto had never encountered anything like it before.
So he chose to experience it personally—to understand it for himself.
That decision… was something Mephisto would come to regret.
Because this was not merely a simple punch.
It was a strike infused with both Armament Haki and Conqueror's Haki.
Not only overwhelmingly heavy and powerful, but carrying terrifying destructive force capable of damaging nearly anything.
Boom!!
In an instant, the ground within hundreds of meters caved in.
Violent shockwaves swept outward like a raging flood, carrying shattered rocks, dust, debris, broken furniture, and everything else in their path.
Mephisto's figure shot out from within the shockwave, dragging a massive trail of dust behind him.
He flew over a thousand meters away, smashing through countless trees and destroying numerous gravestones along the way.
Finally, he crashed into the ground, carving out a trench hundreds of meters long before slowly coming to a stop.
At this moment, Mephisto was somewhat stunned.
Not because of pain.
As an energy projection formed from soul consciousness rather than flesh and blood, he could not feel physical pain from injuries.
He simply realized that what had just happened was completely different from what he expected.
Wasn't he supposed to casually block the attack, calmly analyze the unique power behind Matthew's punch, and then lecture him from a superior position?
So why had he failed to block it?
And why had he ended up in such a miserable state?
Had he just been publicly humiliated?
How many times had this happened already?
After a brief daze, Mephisto's face darkened.
He casually glanced to the side and realized he had landed beside a grave.
The portrait on the gravestone belonged to an especially ugly-looking man.
That expression almost seemed to be mocking him.
Embarrassed and furious, Mephisto stood up and instinctively attempted to tap the ground with his cane.
But the cane never touched the ground.
Looking down, he discovered it had already broken cleanly into two pieces.
Matthew's punch had not only blasted him away—
It had shattered his cane too.
Mephisto fell silent.
Then he laughed from sheer frustration.
After calming himself slightly, he raised his head and looked forward.
Matthew floated in midair.
Countless red-black lightning bolts flashed across the sky behind him, obscuring his face while illuminating his demonic silhouette.
