Chapter 709: Rising Onto the Rankings
Zixiao Blessed Land, the Heavenly Soul Hall.
The interior of the hall was deep and dim, layer upon layer of soul lamps arranged like stars suspended in the void, ranked in order from bottom to top.
On the lowest meditation mat sat a female disciple in purple-white Dao robes, cross-legged, eyes half-closed, quietly cultivating.
She was an on-duty disciple of the Heavenly Soul Hall, having watched over the lamps for three years now.
This duty was an extraordinarily relaxed one.
The Heavenly Soul Hall enshrined the soul lamps of disciples from every Dao tradition of the Zixiao Blessed Land. In three years of watching over the lamps, the number of times she had seen a lamp go out could be counted on one hand, and most of those had been outer disciples at the lowest Grandmaster realm, meeting misfortune while traveling outside, or falling into demonic possession during cultivation, or straying into some dangerous zone and losing their lives.
When those lamps went out, she needed only to record it in the register and report it to an overseer, nothing of any great consequence.
Suddenly, a cracking sound rang out through the hall.
That sound was faint, yet unusually clear within the great hall.
