The sky was blanketed by heavy leaden clouds, and pale lightning tore the heavens apart at irregular intervals, illuminating the muddy mountain paths and the rows of dwellings below.
The outer walls of the manor had already collapsed in large sections. Within the compound, weeds ran wild, and several tile-roofed rooms leaned at precarious angles, looking like a residence that had been abandoned for many years.

In the brief flash of that momentary light, a figure could be seen hovering silently in the air above the manor.
Where the rain fell within three feet of the figure, it slid aside automatically, as though an invisible barrier surrounded him.
