Harem Training System: Every Girl I Train Makes Me Stronger!

Chapter 415. An Unexploded Spell Hanging Between Them

In the center of the yard, the violence finally began to ebb.

The last exchange had been devastating. William had unleashed a spiraling vortex of wind aimed at Kaela’s feet to disrupt her balance, but she had anticipated the pressure drop.

She had leaped not away, but through the gust, her gauntlet whistling through the air to catch William’s wrist. The sound of the impact was a wet, heavy THWACK, followed by the ominous creak of strained ligaments.

For a heartbeat, they were locked: William’s blade pressed against the leather of her pauldron, and Kaela’s fist pressed against the center of his chest, the force of it driving the air from his lungs in a ragged gasp.

Then, they simply... stopped.

The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by their synchronized, desperate gasping for air. Blood trickled from a small cut on William’s cheek where Kaela’s gauntlet had grazed him, and sweat soaked through both of their clothes, making them cling to their bodies like second skins.

’My ribs feel like they’re made of glass,’ William thought. ’My heart is hammering so hard I can taste the copper in my throat.’

’But God... that feeling when she moved before I even thought of it... it’s intoxicating.’

’My lungs are burning, and my arm feels like it’s going to fall off.’

’But I’ve never felt more alive.’

’I could read him in my sleep now. I could feel his next move in my bones.’

William lowered his blade first, the tip scraping against the dirt with a gritty shhhhh sound. He wiped the blood from his cheek with the back of his hand, leaving a crimson smear across his tan skin. His chest heaved, each breath a conscious effort.

Kaela dropped her stance, her legs shaking slightly from the adrenaline crash. She leaned forward, hands on her knees, letting her hair fall forward to hide her flushed face.

"We... should... do that again tomorrow," she managed to choke out between ragged breaths.

William let out a bark of laughter that turned into a cough. "Every day," he promised, his voice hoarse and rough. "If you can actually handle the wind without getting blown away."

Kaela looked up, her eyes bright with a fierce, exhausted triumph. The competitive fire was still there, but beneath it lay something warmer, something that made the space between them vibrate with an unspoken understanding.

"I’m always up for it, Instructor Wade. Try and keep up."

As they stood there in the fading light, two warriors sharing a moment of raw, exhausted victory, the unspoken truth settled between them like the evening mist solid, undeniable, and utterly transformative.

...

The evening air had cooled, but the heat of the day’s violence still seemed to linger in the stone corridors of the palace. As Selena made her way toward the guest wing, her boots clicking with deliberate rhythm against the polished marble, she paused at the threshold.

She turned back to find William and Kaela still flushed from their exertion, their muscles aching, their faces still bearing the faint marks of their brutal sparring session.

A wicked, knowing glint sparked in Selena’s eyes.

"Before I retire," she began, her voice carrying that razor-sharp edge of amusement she wore like armor, "I believe I should make my expectations crystal clear."

William froze mid-sip of his water, his shoulders tensing instinctively. Kaela, who had been adjusting the bandages on her bruised forearm, looked up with wary curiosity.

"I expect a proper wedding invitation," Selena declared, letting the words land like a physical blow.

Her gaze flicked meaningfully between William’s flustered expression and Kaela’s widening eyes. "And I mean a real one."

"None of that tedious, ambiguous political arrangement where two noble houses shake hands while their children suffer."

"I want to see real passion, real choice."

PFFFT ACK!

The sound of Kaela choking on her water echoed off the vaulted ceiling as she descended into a violent coughing fit, her face turning a shade of crimson that rivaled the sunset.

William didn’t fare much better; he made a strangled noise in the back of his throat, his Adam’s apple bobbing convulsively as he stared at the wall, suddenly finding the intricate stonework fascinating.

"Selena," William managed to choke out, his voice cracking slightly. "That is... entirely inappropriate."

"Inappropriate?" Selena laughed, a rich, delighted sound that showed she was enjoying their discomfort immensely.

She crossed her arms, leaning against the archway with obvious satisfaction. "I’m simply being pragmatic."

"I’ve spent my entire career reading people reading their tells, their tells in combat, and their tells in negotiation."

"And you two?" A slow smile spread across her face. "You two have been dancing around something all afternoon."

"I have eyes, William. I saw the way you moved."

"That kind of synchronization that primal, instinctive understanding doesn’t happen between two people who are merely instructor and student."

"That’s the kind of bond forged in fire and blood."

’Damn it, she’s too good. ’William thought. ’She sees right through the training, right through the technique, straight to the part of me that can’t stop thinking about how Kaela looks when she’s fighting like a demon.’

"We’re not—" William started, his voice gaining a defensive edge, then faltering.

The words died in his throat as he realized there was no honest way to finish the sentence without admitting something he wasn’t ready to voice aloud.

"We’re not what, exactly?" Selena pressed, stepping closer, her grin widening as she sensed his surrender. "Not what, William? Not enemies? Not strangers?"

William closed his eyes for a moment, exhaling a long, defeated breath. "I..."

"I don’t actually know how to finish that sentence," he admitted, his shoulders slumping in genuine surrender.

The admission hung in the air for three heartbeats before Kaela, having finally stopped coughing, let out a startled, breathless laugh. It was an embarrassed sound, but it broke the tension like a dam bursting.

"That’s rather telling, don’t you think?" Selena purred, looking entirely too pleased with herself, as if she had just won a decisive battle without drawing a blade.

Catherine, who had been observing from the shadows of the dining hall with a cup of tea in hand, couldn’t contain her amusement any longer. She stepped forward, her eyes warm with genuine delight.

"Well, if we’re discussing future formalities, I’ll make sure you’re both properly informed," she added, her tone gentle but laced with unmistakable teasing. "Whenever that particular event might eventually occur."

"Catherine!" William groaned, burying his face in one hand while the other pressed against his forehead. "Not you too."

"What? Don’t look at me like that," Catherine said, tilting her head with mock innocence. "I’m simply being a gracious hostess and accommodating our guest’s requests."

Catherine caught Selena’s eye.

For a split second, the two women exchanged a brief, conspiratorial glance—a silent pact between two predators who had just cornered their prey. Neither William nor Kaela caught the meaning behind it, but the shared smirk between them spoke volumes.

As the women retreated into the hallway, their quiet laughter echoing behind them, William and Kaela remained standing in the silence, the unspoken truth between them now feeling heavier, warmer, and infinitely more dangerous than any blade they had wielded that day.

After the women’s laughter faded into the corridors, leaving behind an echoing silence that felt thicker than before, William found himself unable to look away. Beneath the lingering amusement of the moment, he caught Kaela’s eye.

The air between them suddenly felt charged, ionized like the moments before a lightning strike. Her pupils were blown wide, dark, and unreadable, but the way her chest rose and fell rapidly and shallowly betrayed her.

Both of them were trapped in the gravity of Selena’s words; the idea of a ’real’ wedding, of something beyond training and duty, hung between them like an unexploded spell.

For several agonizing seconds, neither moved, neither spoke, caught in a silent, charged standoff where every heartbeat felt like a hammer blow against their ribs.

’Say something. "Anything...!" William thought, screaming. ’Break the tension before it burns us both alive!’

’But if I speak, will I say something I can’t take back?’

Kaela also thought. ’His eyes... they’re looking at me like I’m the only thing in this room.’

’Like he’s seeing through every defense I’ve ever built.’

’God, my heart won’t stop racing.’
