Chapter 309. She’s Reading My Soul, Not My Stance
The sparring session had long since ceased to be a lesson; it had become a mutual descent into madness. The training field was no longer a place of instruction; it was a slaughterhouse of intent.
The air was thick with the copper tang of blood, the acrid stench of burnt mana, and the ragged, desperate gasps of two warriors pushed past the brink of human endurance.
Lia was no longer fighting William; she was fighting the concept of him. Her eyes, once warm and guiding, had gone flat and predatory.
She had stopped trying to predict his next stance and had begun to read the minute tensing of his tendons, the subtle shift in his center of gravity before his mana even manifested. She was reading the soul of the fight.
William sensed the shift. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped animal.
’She’s not reacting to my moves anymore,’ he realized with a jolt of genuine terror. ’She’s reacting to my intent.’
Desperate to break her newfound focus, William threw everything at her. He shifted into Arcane Wield without warning.
His fingers danced through complex geometric patterns in the air, and a condensed bolt of azure mana shrieked across the field.
VROOOOOM SHHHH!
The projectile tore through the air, leaving a trail of ionized oxygen behind it.
Lia didn’t flinch. Instead of dodging, which would have left her exposed to his follow-up, she dropped into a punishingly deep crouch.
She channeled her remaining reserves into Undertow Surge, not to attack, but to catch the redirected shockwave of his previous strike.
The ground beneath her exploded upward as she absorbed the kinetic energy.
BOOM!
Her legs trembled violently, her muscles corded like steel cables as she forced the raw power into her stance rather than letting it throw her off balance.
"Good instinct," William called out, his voice cracking with exertion as he closed the distance.
He shifted fluidly back into Single Wield, his blade a silver streak. "Keep building!"
But Lia was already moving.
As William lunged, his blade aimed for her throat, Lia erupted from her crouch like a coiled spring. She didn’t parry; she met him with a brutal, close-quarters shoulder check.
CRUNCH.
The impact caught William off guard. His shoulder socket screamed as it was driven backward, the sound of cartilage grinding against bone echoing in his own skull.
"Don’t get cocky, William!" Lia roared.
She spun her greatsword in a vicious arc, the blade catching the sunlight before slamming into his ribs.
William barely managed to shift into stone configuration, his skin taking on a grayish, granite-like sheen. The impact was devastating.
Even with the enhancement, he felt something inside crack a wet, splintering sound that made his vision swim.
’Shit, something broke,’ he thought bitterly, blood frothing at the corner of his mouth. ’My ribs... One of them definitely snapped.’
He didn’t retreat. Pain was just more fuel.
He twisted the pain into a counterthrust. Using the momentum of her own swing, he drove Aetherion upward in a vicious Wind Stance uppercut.
The blade whistled beneath her guard. Lia twisted in midair, the enchanted steel grazing her ribs with a shower of sparks and a spray of crimson.
SHINK!
A thin line of blood painted her side.
"You’re getting faster," William gasped, his breathing coming in wet, labored stutters.
"You’re not the only one who’s been training!" Lia shot back.
Her face was splattered with sweat and a few droplets of his blood, but she wore a fierce, feral grin, a smile that spoke of a woman who had found her true purpose in the heart of violence.
She came at him again, but this time the choreography was terrifyingly complex. She initiated a Tide combo: a low sweep designed to take his legs, immediately followed by a vertical cleave that would split a man in two.
William danced on the edge of death. He leapt over the sweep WHOOSH and felt the wind of her blade slice through his boot.
But as he was airborne, she anticipated his landing. She swung the greatsword in a horizontal slash while he was still mid-jump.
William had no choice. He forced Aetherion into double wielding mid-air to create a makeshift shield.
CLANG CLANG CLANG!
The blades took the brunt of the blow, but the force was so immense that his arms went numb instantly. He crashed into the dirt hard, the impact sending a fresh wave of agony through his fractured ribs.
’I can’t breathe...’ his mind screamed.
His lungs felt like they were filling with molten lead. ’Every breath tastes like metal.’
Through the haze of pain, he saw Lia advancing. She wasn’t rushing; she was stalking.
She was savoring the moment, her greatsword dragging behind her in the dirt, leaving a furrow in the earth.
Skreeeeeeeeee.
The sound was unnerving, like a predator’s growl.
"Still alive, Instructor Wade?" she asked, her voice deceptively calm despite the carnage surrounding them.
William spat a glob of blood into the dust and forced himself to his knees. His vision was tunneling, but his grip on Aetherion remained iron-tight.
"Not yet."
He channeled every last drop of his mana into a desperate gamble. He didn’t go for a stance; he went for an explosion.
Ember fused with Wind, a technique he hadn’t even practiced, born purely from the desperation to survive.
"Then prove it!" Lia screamed, lunging forward with a final, all-consuming strike.
The training field had transcended being a place of practice; it had become a charnel house of raw intent.
The air was no longer oxygen; it was a thick, choking miasma of kicked-up grit, ionized mana, and the copper-sweet stench of arterial blood.
Both combatants were no longer operating on conscious thought; they were moving on pure, bleeding instinct.
Lia’s movements had taken on a terrifying fluidity. She wasn’t just reacting to William’s blades anymore; she was predicting the very air pressure shifts that preceded his attacks.
Her greatsword, once a tool of disciplined defense, now moved like a living thing, a hungry predator seeking flesh.
William felt his ribs grinding with every inhalation. Each breath was a wet, clicking reminder of the fractured bone pressing against his lung.
’One more mistake,’ he warned himself, his inner voice sounding distant and detached through the haze of pain, ’and I’m dead.’
’She’s not playing the student anymore. She’s hunting.’
The exchange accelerated into a blur of lethal motion. William launched a complex sequence: Wind Stance to close the distance with impossible speed, immediately transitioning into Double Wield to overwhelm her guard with a flurry of staccato strikes.
SHINK SHINK SHINK SHINK!
The blades hissed through the air like angry vipers.
Lia met the assault not with brute force but with terrifying economy. She twisted her torso, letting his blades whistle past her ribs by mere millimeters, the displaced air tearing at her skin.
In the split second he overextended, she unleashed a partial Wavecleaver Arc.
KRA BOOM!
The release of mana wasn’t just a swing; it was a physical detonation. A crescent wave of compressed force tore across the ground, sending a visible shockwave through the dirt that kicked up a wall of debris.
William was caught off guard. The impact hit him center mass, staggering him half a step back as his boots carved deep furrows in the earth.
His teeth rattled in his skull as his vertebrae buckled under the sheer kinetic pressure.
’Shit—!’ William’s mind screamed as his vision flickered black.
He forced his body to react before his brain could even process the pain, slamming his mana into Stone Stance. His skin hardened to a dull, granite gray just as the residual shockwave slammed into him again.
CRUNCH.
The sound of his own reinforced bones absorbing the impact reverberated through his body like a sledgehammer hitting an anvil.
"That," William wheezed, blood spattering from his lips as he fought to regain his footing, "was not something we practiced timing that precisely."
Lia stood five paces away, her chest heaving in ragged, desperate gulps. A deep gash across her left shoulder bled steadily, the crimson liquid streaming down her arm and dripping onto the scorched earth.
Her hair was matted with sweat and dust, her eyes bright with something dangerously close to ecstasy.
"I improvised," Lia said, her voice raw and cracking with exhaustion, though a spark of fierce, unbridled pride flickered behind the fatigue.
She didn’t give him time to recover. Before the dust from her Arc could even settle, she charged. This time, there was no hesitation.
She drove her weight forward, her greatsword glowing with a sickly, turbulent blue light, the sign of an unstable Tide enhancement.
William met her halfway. He knew he couldn’t block this; the force would shatter his stone-enhanced bones like glass.
Instead, he gambled on pure reaction. He shifted into Arcane Wield, not for a bolt but to create a momentary barrier of crystallized mana.
CLANG SHATTER!
The collision was deafening. Lia’s blade struck his mana shield with the force of a falling star.
The shield didn’t just break; it exploded inward.
Shards of crystallized mana flew like razor-sharp shrapnel. One shard sliced across William’s cheek, while another embedded itself in his forearm with a wet
THWACK.
The follow-through of Lia’s swing caught William’s shoulder, and despite his stone enhancement, he felt the sickening POP as his joint partially dislocated.
A guttural scream tore from his throat as he was sent spinning backward across the field.
"Instructor Wade!" Lia’s shout was half panic, half adrenaline.
