Chapter 56: Seven Days to Die
Eiren’s Pov
Elysium. The divine name rang like a heavy war bell in Eiren’s ears. He had read the ancient texts about the celestial city where the true deities resided—the very paradise from which Azriel and his demonic brothers had been violently cast down to live among mortal men.
The legendary city of prosperity and celestial perfection.
"You... you are a god from Elysium?" Eiren breathed, his anger momentarily replaced by awe.
Caelum shook his head, a mocking smile playing on his lips as he walked closer to Eiren.
With every step the celestial took, his grand white wings gradually folded and dissolved into his back until they vanished entirely. "I am no god, human. But yes, I am a resident of Elysium, and I faithfully serve the God of War."
"What the hell is an assassin of the War God doing down here in the mortal realm? Especially within the Whispering Ruins?"
Caelum glided across the wooden floorboards, his movements fluid and silent. "The sickening, seductive stench of the Prince of Lust is practically stained into your very soul, human. I am well aware that you have been his favored companion for years."
Eiren instantly noticed how effortlessly Caelum had dodged his question, but he wasn’t about to back down. "You still haven’t answered me. Why are you here in Katula?"
"Dodging my question in return, I see," Caelum noted, his obsidian eyes dancing with amusement. "It seems humans have grown a bit bolder since I last visited this realm."
"Well, you technically dodged mine first," Eiren countered sharply, crossing his arms.
"Fair enough." Caelum smacked his lips together, turning his attention toward a dark, weathered cabinet resting against the wooden wall. He pulled the cabinet door open and reached inside, retrieving a strange, sinister-looking object.
It was a compact bundle of pure black, jagged wooden sticks, tightly bound together by a coarse, crimson vine that seemed to pulse with a faint, malevolent energy.
"The truth is, I was officially sent here by the higher deities of Elysium to prevent the birth of the Child of Lust," Caelum explained, turning back to face Eiren. "The Whispering Ruins is the only location in this entire kingdom where ancient celestial magic can be utilized without being detected by the demons. I have been hiding out in these woods for a very long time, gradually losing all hope of fulfilling my mission... until my eyes fell upon you in the forest the other day."
Eiren gave him a sharp, calculating look but remained entirely silent, allowing the assassin to continue.
"You see, I possess the unique ability to perceive the spiritual energy of any living creature, and through that energy, I can read the exact nature of their darkest desires. That was how I instantly deduced your profound, burning hatred for the Prince’s human vessel. I knew I could exploit that hatred to get to you. And now, look at that—you are standing right here."
Eiren cleared his throat, absorbing the weight of the revelation before finally speaking. "So, if I am understanding this correctly... the divine deities sent you to assassinate an unborn child? Why are the gods so terrified of the Child of Lust?"
"Too many questions, mortal," Caelum snapped, his smile vanishing as he gripped the black bundle tightly. "Do not let your foolish curiosity lead you to an early grave. I was under the impression that you wanted that human boy completely gone."
"Yes. I want him destroyed," Eiren admitted through gritted teeth.
"Which is precisely why..." Caelum paused, extending his arm and thrusting the bound wooden bundle directly toward Eiren’s chest. "You should stop demanding answers and focus entirely on your mission. The Child of Lust must never take its first breath. That is the only piece of information you require."
"The only thing I need to know!" Eiren scoffed bitterly, aggressively pushing the bundle back into Caelum’s chest. "I am the one actively risking my life by infiltrating the Prince’s inner sanctum, and you expect me to—"
"No, human," Caelum interrupted, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy tone as he easily caught the bundle. "You are not here out of obligation to anyone else. You are standing in this room because you want that boy dead to salvage your own pride. If you are going to waste my time with interrogations, I will simply find another disgruntled concubine to do my bidding."
Caelum stretched his hand out, making a motion to retract the bundle entirely, but Eiren’s hand instantly shot forward, gripping the celestial’s wrist to stop him.
Caelum’s wicked, knowing grin slowly returned as he stared down at Eiren’s grip. "Have you changed your mind, human?"
"What exactly do I need to do?" Eiren asked, his voice low. He realized with a sinking heart that he had no other alternative. He had to play along with this celestial weapon to ensure he reclaimed his rightful place on the throne. The unanswered questions could wait for later.
"Place this bundle directly beneath the mattress of the Prince of Lust’s precious vessel. The magic will handle the rest."
"What will it do to him?"
"Always so relentlessly curious," Caelum chuckled, though he didn’t withhold the answer this time. "The object you are holding was carved entirely from the branches of the Trees of Eternal Sleep. For as long as that bundle remains hidden beneath his bed, the vessel will instantly collapse into a profound, unbreakable slumber. On the seventh day of his sleep, his heart will simply cease to beat."
Eiren’s eyes widened as he stared down at the black wood, realizing the catastrophic power resting in his hands. "So... he will die a quick, painless death in his sleep?"
Caelum unleashed a loud, booming laugh, shaking his head in amusement. "Painless? Kaishata, the Tree of Eternal Sleep, is a divine entity manifested entirely from the realm of primordial nightmares. No, human. That vessel will endure a horrific, agonizing psychological torture. He will be violently plagued by his deepest, darkest terrors every single second until his mind completely shatters and he dies. Luckily for us, not a single soul in history has ever survived the wrath of Kaishata. They all die miserably."
A slow, thoroughly satisfied smile spread across Eiren’s face. This was exactly what he wanted.
Seraphel deserved to endure the ultimate torture after the immense humiliation he had forced Eiren to suffer in front of the Grand Council.
"If that is the case," Eiren murmured, tightening his grip around the artifact, "then consider it done."
"Excellent," Caelum replied, his obsidian eyes flashing with a predatory light. "You are exactly the type of ruthless human I expected you to be. I am well aware that the Prince intends to wed the vessel in a week’s time, so you must ensure Kaishata is planted beneath his bed before the ceremony occurs. If you fail to do so before the wedding vows are sealed, everything we have planned will be entirely for nothing."
"What do you mean by that? Why would the wedding change anything?" Eiren pressed frantically.
But before he could demand an explanation, a violent, blinding explosion of golden light consumed the entire wooden cabin.
Eiren shrieked, instantly raising his arms to shield his eyes from the radiant heat. The last thing that registered in his ears over the roaring cosmic energy was Caelum’s echoing, fading whisper:
"Until we meet again, human..."
The moment the blinding glare finally dissolved and Eiren opened his eyes, the wooden cabin and the celestial assassin were entirely gone. He was standing completely alone in the damp, foggy clearing of the Whispering Ruins forest with the heavy, cursed bundle of Kaishata clutched tightly in his hand.
