Chapter 51: The Only One Who Can Calm the Beast
SeraphelIt was all because of me? His ultimate trigger? What the hell did that even mean?
There was no way. Azriel probably just felt disrespected because he’s a literal prince who hates when people talk down to him, or maybe he was just acting crazy for the sake of the baby.
"It can’t be..." I muttered.
"I am telling you, Seraphel, this is because of you! And you are the only one who can stop it!" Malachi shouted over the wind, pointing back toward Azriel.
The Prince of Lust was still floating in the air, surrounded by a thick, glowing red smoke. Beneath him, the ministers were twisting and groaning in pain, looking like they were right on the verge of death.
"Alright!" I yelled, finally forcing myself to stand up. "Here goes nothing then! And remember, Malachi, if I die, it is entirely your fault!"
Here goes nothing, I thought, struggling to keep my balance as I took a few steps toward Azriel. The ground was shaking so hard I could barely walk, but I managed to reach his back. I just needed two more steps.
"Your Highness, please stop this," I said softly.
The second the words left my mouth, one of his thick red vines shot out. Before I could even blink, it wrapped around my throat and yanked me into the air to face him.
"Your..." I groaned, clawing at the vines. It was useless. They were too strong, and they felt as sharp as blades against my skin.
I knew I shouldn’t have listened to Malachi. This was completely pointless, and now I was about to die because of him.
Azriel’s eyes weren’t even focused on me; he was completely out of it. The vines squeezed tighter every second, cutting off my air. I could feel my energy draining fast, and that’s when I realized what was happening—the vines were literally sucking out my life force and feeding it straight to Azriel.
Eventually, I was going to turn into a corpse.
Right below my feet, I noticed one of the ministers had already been drained completely, left as nothing but a pile of dry bones on the floor.
I choked, struggling as hard as I could. Using whatever breath I had left in my throat, I screamed his name.
"Azriel!"
I didn’t even know how I managed to shout that loud, but he suddenly snapped out of it. He turned to look at me with a confused expression, and then the dark red light in his eyes vanished completely.
The vines disappeared into thin air.
Groans echoed all around the room as the ministers fell to the ground. I started falling too, but Azriel blurred right in front of me and caught me in his arms before I could hit the floor.
He stared down at me, his terrifying expression completely gone, replaced by pure worry.
"Are you alright? Did I hurt you?" he asked.
Was he seriously asking me that right now?
"You annoying piece of jerk!" I yelled, raising my hand to slap his face.
But he just caught my hand, rubbing it gently, and pulled me even closer into his chest. When I tried to struggle against him, he stopped me by pressing his forehead firmly against mine.
Azriel let out a deep sigh of relief and closed his eyes for a moment. I felt a sudden coolness spread through me, like it was transferring from his body to mine.
After a minute, he opened his eyes and looked at me.
"I almost hurt you," he muttered, cupping my face with his hands. "So don’t ever do that again. Never step in when something like this happens."
I angrily pushed his hands away from my face. "It was all your fault! You almost turned this place into a—"
I paused, looking around the room, and the words died in my throat. Nothing was broken. The shattered walls, the cracked floors—everything looked perfectly fine, like the destruction had never happened.
Even the ministers who were dying a second ago were back on their feet. The only real thing left was the pile of bones on the floor.
"What the hell," I whispered.
I looked around again, seeing that all the ministers now had their heads bowed in total submission.
My heart started racing fast, realizing just how terrifying and powerful this sin actually was.
"I hope you all learned your lesson today," Azriel continued coldly, walking back toward his throne while pulling me along.
He sat down and pulled me right onto his lap.
I didn’t even fight him this time because I was still in shock over the madness he had just caused.
"It is unfortunate that one of you is dead," he said, slowly wrapping his arm around my waist. He leaned against my back until I felt his cool skin against mine, resting his head on my shoulder. "But this happened because of your own stupidity. If you had listened to me the first time without arguing, none of this would have happened."
He looked back out at the court, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Seraphel will be your Crown Princess. I expect you to show him the exact same respect you have for me."
The ministers all chanted in unison, "Yes, Your Highness."
The switch-up was crazy.
I was in awe of how fast they all agreed with him. Some of them were visibly shaking in fear, and not a single one dared to raise their head.
"Very well then. Start the wedding preparations immediately. Lady Mireth, you will be in charge of the planning. Check the best auspicious time for the ceremony and report back to me."
Lady Mireth nodded, her head still lowered to the floor. "Yes... Your Highness," she responded shakily.
"Good. Now that it is over, this meeting is at an end."
All the ministers fell to their knees and bowed low. "Your greatness is immeasurable, Your Highness," they chanted three times.
But as they turned to leave, the heavy doors burst open.
Concubine Eiren walked into the hall, looking stunning in a lavish red robe, his red hair neatly tied up in a high ponytail.
I stared at him, wondering why he was here. For no reason at all, a sharp knot tightened in my stomach.
The sudden wave of jealousy caught me completely off guard.
He carried himself with so much grace and elegance that I couldn’t help but think he was the better option for Azriel. If it weren’t for this sudden pregnancy, I knew Azriel would never have chosen me or even looked my way.
And because of that, I felt a bitter sting of envy.
Then I saw what was coming in behind him. Three people were walking slowly, their hands bound tightly in heavy iron chains.
My eyes widened in instant shock as memories from Seraphel’s past rushed into my mind.
It was his abusive aunt, his cruel uncle, and their spoiled brat of a son.
What the hell are they doing here? I panicked, my body going completely stiff.
Azriel’s voice sounded right next to my ear, noticing how much I was shaking in his arms. He pulled me tighter against his chest, a wicked grin spreading across his face.
"Do you like my surprise, Seraphel? Today, I shall personally punish those who dared to hurt you in the past."
