Chapter 50: The Price of Defiance

Harry's blood ran cold as Dumbledore's words echoed through the silent living room.

"You didn't truly think that you got away with it... didn't you?"

The Headmaster stood at the bottom of the stairs...his crimson robes were pooling around him like blood. His blue eyes were cold, hard, and utterly devoid of the twinkle that usually fools people into thinking he was a kindly old man.

The mask was gone now, and he was finally meeting the real Albus Dumbledore who hid beneath it.

Harry couldn't keep his hands from trembling...there was something truly terrifying about this person.

He could feel the weight of his hidden wand against his chest, but he did not reach for it. Not yet. He needed to understand what was happening.

"I..." He paused. " I don't know what you're talking about, Headmaster," Harry said, trying to keep his voice steady despite the fear coursing through him.

Dumbledore smiled in a way that did not reach his eyes. "Do NOT insult my intelligence, Harry. I know everything that you did at the castle. I have always known everything that happens in Hogwarts, my boy. My eyes and ears are everywhere."

He walked slowly into the living room...his footsteps felt silent on the carpet.

Moody and the thin man stepped aside to let him pass, their eyes fixed on Harry like hawks watching a mouse.

"You destroyed my laboratory," Dumbledore continued his speech, his voice soft but sharp as a blade. "You released the spirits I had collected....my precious materials. But more importantly... YOU freed the Dark Lord!"

He paused, his eyes narrowing. "Do you have any idea what you have done? What you have unleashed upon this country?. Do you even understand how dangerous that man is?"

Harry's stomach churned. He knows. He knows everything.

'But...this means that Tom Riddle actually survived that explosion and escaped?. How can that be?.'

"No need for you to understand the details of such matters," Dumbledore said, as if he had been reading his thoughts.

Harry immediately looked away...he had forgotten to avoid eye contact with the old wizard, who is a Master Legilimens.

"But yes, he escaped..." Dumbledore said, his voice dripping with contempt. "He escaped, after over a decade of careful containment, of meticulous planning. He is now free...and it is because of you."

Harry felt a cold dread settle over him as he felt all that anger directed at him.

"What did you expect would happen?" Dumbledore asked, his voice rising slightly. "Did you think you could waltz into my private chambers, destroy years of work, and walk away without consequences? Did you think I would not find out?"

Harry's jaw tightened. "I...I did what I had to do. You were keeping innocent people trapped there. You were torturing them. Using their souls for your dark rituals."

Dumbledore's eyes flashed with anger. "You are nothing but an ignorant child. You dont understand a single thing about the Greater Good, about the sacrifices that must be made to maintain ORDER in this society. Those souls were necessary. They were fuel for the magic that keeps this country stable."

"Stable?" Harry's voice cracked with fury. "You call murder stable? You call torture stable? You're a monster."

Dumbledore's expression did not change. "I am a pragmatist, Harry. I do what must be done. Your father understood that. Your mother understood it too, in her own way. I had hoped you would follow in their footsteps." He paused. "But it seems you have chosen a different path."

Harry glanced at the Dursleys, still unconscious on the sofa. There was no point in denying his actions...Dumbledore already knew everything. But he had to at least save them.

"They have nothing to do with this. Let them go, and...whatever punishment you have for me, I'll accept it. Just dont hurt them."

Dumbledore followed his gaze, his eyes lingering on Petunia's still form. "Your Muggle family," he said, his voice cold. "I'll be honest...the reason for placing you here was because I thought they would treat you poorly. I thought you would grow up hating Muggles, hating the world that had rejected you. I thought you would be eager to embrace the connexions and power I could offer you."

He turned back to Harry, his expression stern. "Instead, they treated you with kindness. They showed you love. They ruined everything I had prepared for you."

Harry felt sick after hearing his motivations.

Dumbledore just wanted him to be abused...to learn to hate more than anything else, as this would make him easier to manipulate.

"You're despicable," Harry spat.

Dumbledore offered him a cold smile containing a hint of pride. "Perhaps I am. But I do what I must. And you, Harry, are going to learn that defiance comes with a price."

He raised his wand, aiming it at Petunia.

Harry's blood turned to ice. "No!" he shouted. "Don't hurt her! She hasn't done anything wrong!"

"Her crime is existing," Dumbledore said calmly. "Her crime is...making you weak and useless."

Harry did not think. He acted on instinct.

His hand shot into his jacket, pulling out the wand he had been hiding. He aimed it at Dumbledore, pouring every ounce of rage, fear, and desperation into a single spell.

"VERBERO!"

The blast was tremendous...much more powerful than anything Harry had ever produced during his practice sessions.

He created a concussive wave of force that erupted from his wand, slamming into Dumbledore with devastating impact.

Dumbledore's eyes widened in surprise.

He managed to raise a shield just in time, but the force of the blast threw him backwards, his body crashing into the wall with a sickening thud.

The wall cracked, and Dumbledore crumpled to the floor.

There was a moment of silence after that. A moment where time seemed to slow down to a crawl.

Harry stared at Dumbledore lying on the floor of the living room, next to the stairs that led to his bedroom.

Then...the others made their move.

Remus Lupin reacted first, his wand already in his hand. "Incarcerous!" Magical ropes shot from his wand, wrapping around Harry's arms and legs, binding him tightly.

Harry fell to the floor, his wand still tightly clutched in his hand.

Moody was next. His magical eye spun wildly, and his wand flashed. "Expelliarmus!" Harry's wand was wrenched off his hand with tremendous force, and it flew across the room, landing in Moody's waiting hand.

Harry struggled against the ropes, but they were too tight. He was trapped.

The thin man walked forward, his cruel smile twisted into a snarl. He aimed his wand at Harry, his eyes gleaming with malice.

"How dare you harm him!" he hissed. "CRUCIO!"

Harry screamed.

Pain...unimaginable, unbearable pain exploded through his body.

It felt like every nerve was on fire, like his bones were being crushed to dust, like his skin was being peeled from his flesh.

He convulsed on the floor, his vision going white, his screams echoing off the walls.

The thin man laughed, his wand still trained on Harry. "Not so brave now, are you, Potter?"

"ENOUGH!"

Dumbledore's voice cut through the chaos like a blade. He had risen from the floor, his robes disheveled, a trickle of blood running from his lip.

His eyes blazed with fury. And it was not directed at Harry now...he was glaring at the person who threw the Unforgivable Curse.

The thin man lowered his wand, his face turned pale when he noticed the anger in Dumbledore's eyes. "Master, I was only-"

"Who told you to use that spell on him?" Dumbledore's voice was low and dangerous. "Who gave you permission to use the Cruciatus Curse on the boy?"

The thin man stammered. "I-I was defending you, Master. He attacked you. I thought-"

"You thought wrong." Dumbledore raised his wand, his expression cold and unforgiving. "I specifically said that no one was to use any spell on the boy that could affect his mind. Only I am allowed to take that risk. Was I not clear?"

"Master, please-"

"AVADA KEDAVRA!"

A flash of green light filled the room. The thin man's eyes went wide, and then he crumpled to the floor, his body landing with a dull thud.

He did not move again.

Harry, still writhing in pain, saw the man fall. His mind was hazy, his body trembling, but he understood what had just happened.

Dumbledore had killed his own follower for disobeying his orders.

Moody and Lupin stared at the body with horror, but neither of them spoke to complain or make a comment.

Dumbledore lowered his wand...his expression showed no emotion after killing that man.

"Useless," he muttered, his tone filled with disappointment while glancing at the corpse with disgust. "He was always too eager. Too reckless."

"Shall I dispose of the body, Master?" Moody asked, his voice carefully neutral.

Dumbledore waved a dismissive hand. "No need. Just leave it there. I will deal with it in a moment."

He turned to Harry, who was still trembling on the floor, the lingering effects of the Cruciatus Curse making his muscles twitch uncontrollably.

Harry tried to speak, but only a weak, incoherent sound escaped his lips.

Dumbledore knelt beside him, his expression softening slightly. "It's alright, Harry. The pain will pass soon enough. I am sorry you had to experience that. It was not part of my plan."

He reached out and touched Harry's forehead, his fingers tracing the lightning bolt scar. His eyes narrowed in concentration.

"Ah," he murmured, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Still intact. Perfect."

Harry tried to pull away, but he was too weak. He could only glare at Dumbledore with all the hatred he could muster.

Dumbledore stood up, looking down at Harry with cold satisfaction. "That was a very impressive display of magic, my boy. Where did you learn that spell?"

Harry did not answer.

Dumbledore chuckled. "Oh, no need to tell me. I already know the answer to that." He paused. "It seems you have been busy." He gave Harry a knowing look that told him that even his well-protected secrets...were not so secret for him.

Harry's eyes opened widely and watched as the Heamdatester turned to Moody and Lupin, his expression hardening. "Burn the house, and everyone on it. Make it look like an accident. And make sure the Muggles do not survive."

Harry's eyes went wide. "N-No!" he managed, his voice a strangled gasp. "Please... please don't hurt them..."

Dumbledore turned back to him, his blue eyes devoid of any compassion. "I have no choice on this matter, Harry. You brought this upon them. You chose to defy me. Now you must face the consequences."

"Please," Harry begged, tears streaming down his face. "They're innocent. They're my family. They're the only family I have-"

"They are the reason you are weak," Dumbledore interrupted. "They are the reason you are so disobedient. They are the reason my plans have been delayed." He paused. "But I will correct that. I will correct everything. The thing about magic is that it can make the impossible...possible."

He raised his wand, pointing it at Harry's forehead.

"We are going to try this again, Harry," he said softly. "And don't worry, my dear boy... you won't remember any of this."

Harry tried to scream, tried to fight, tried to do anything...but he was too weak. The Cruciatus Curse had drained him, and magical bindings kept him in place. He could only watch as Dumbledore's wand touched his scar.

"Obliviate."
