Chapter 243 - 235: The Flower Boat and the Ghost Academy
At the arched entrance beneath Crystal City’s Ghost Lighthouse, a discussion was unfolding among three individuals inside a special Earth Traveling Boat.
Uluu was trembling slightly.
The other two speakers were of extraordinary origins.
One was Lady Yaopu, a Prophet chosen by the White God, and a former Martial Cultivator and Ghost Physician. She was now a permanent resident of the Ghost Lighthouse, dedicated to encouraging the Empire’s Ghosts to leave the tower and rebuild this old imperial capital.
The other was Huangjue, a Wise Man of the Bully Locusts. He had been appointed as a Prophet by the Yao God and had led his people in a struggle to break free from the Binding of their instincts, finding a path to integrate into the Yao Race Civilization.
The locust swarms that remained behind had gradually evolved into the present-day Slaughter Flying Locusts. Most of them lived in a daze, knowing only how to plunder food and frequently killing each other for it.
In the presence of two Prophets, Uluu was understandably nervous.
"...Mr. Uluu, what are your thoughts?" Huangjue asked, looking at him.
The Wuzi man stiffened. He took out a notebook and wrote with a quill: Are you referring to the matter of the locust swarms?
"Yes."
Huangjue’s Body Type was much smaller than a human’s. He lay sprawled on a seat, the two thread-like antennae on his head twitching slightly as his compound eyes focused earnestly on the Wuzi man before him.
Uluu gathered his thoughts.
After a series of reconstruction and reorganization efforts, Crystal City had now completely driven the locust swarms outside its walls. Guards from the Flame Totem and the Green Rose had also cut off the swarms’ routes for infiltrating from underground.
However, large numbers of locusts still lay in wait near the city’s outskirts. They could burst from the earth at any moment and attack Crystal City’s citizens along the roads.
This was currently the most serious public security issue, affecting not only the residents of Crystal City but also threatening the merchants and laborers who came from other cities for Trade and work.
The Martial Cultivators had cleared out tens of thousands of locusts, but the Slaughter Flying Locusts had an extremely high reproductive rate and did not shy away from cannibalism. The dead simply became food for the living.
The eradication campaigns outside Crystal City had been ongoing for several months, with mediocre results.
Huangjue’s idea was that since the God had not annihilated this race, they must possess some kind of value. When dealing with a disaster, it was better to manage it than to simply block it.
He proposed using the Bully Locusts to communicate and make contact with the local Slaughter Flying Locusts—since both originated from the same source, there were no barriers to communication between them.
After years of fighting amongst themselves, the local Slaughter Flying Locusts had formed various groups. The style of these groups differed greatly from region to region: some swarms were stable and conservative, some were aggressive and prone to Madness, some roamed about Hunting, and others were avid thieves.
Huangjue believed they should identify which of these groups could be recruited and put them to use for Crystal City.
This way, the movements and intelligence of the Slaughter Flying Locusts would become very clear. For every group that became a collaborator, there would be one less potential enemy and threat.
He had made attempts and found that some of the Slaughter Flying Locusts were willing. A harsh, barren life in the wild and the precarious, life-or-death nature of Hunting was not what every swarm wanted.
Huangjue was also very frank about his intentions.
He was not only thinking of Crystal City’s benefit but also hoped that the Slaughter Flying Locust race, like the Bully Locusts of the past, could gradually escape their primitive, savage existence and enter the circle of civilization.
Of course, changing a race’s entire way of life was no easy task; it had to be done step by step.
...
Uluu wrote a sentence on the paper with his quill, then held up the sheet for the two Prophets to see.
—I think it’s an excellent idea. We could test it out with the Flower Boat.
"Is that this new type of Earth Traveling Boat? I arrived in a hurry and haven’t had a good look at it yet."
Huangjue flew out of a nearby exit to observe it from mid-air.
Viewed from above, the shuttle-shaped Earth Traveling Boat was of a medium Body Type, resembling a galley without sails that had run aground in the sand.
Unlike other fully enclosed Earth Traveling Boats, this shuttle-shaped vessel had three tall Green Roses planted on its top, watching over each other at equal distances.
Thorny branches and green petals grew from the yellowish-brown Earth Traveling Boat, creating a strange and magnificent beauty.
Huangjue immediately understood the ingenuity of this Earth Traveling Boat.
He flew back inside the boat and said with some amazement, "Using the Green Roses as defensive weapons! Any attacking locust swarm will be assaulted by the thorns shot from the roses... A remarkable and ingenious concept!"
"Uluu is a true genius," Yaopu said with a smile. "And that’s been certified by Fabiani himself."
Uluu turned the page with a finger, revealing the writing on the next sheet.
—Lord Pinkman’s cultivated Green Roses aren’t picky about their environment. They are easy to transplant, have a gentle temperament, and can grow tenaciously with just soil and water.
—The hardest part was actually modifying the Earth Traveling Boat. The surface environment is completely different from the underground; only the bottom of the boat can touch soil and rock. Many Wuzi Clan People participated in the improvements, but we could never get the Flower Boat’s speed up. It’s slower than a camel and can currently only navigate on flat terrain.
"That’s just a small problem. It doesn’t affect its utility."
Huangjue said, "It’s far more durable than a mule or horse. As long as a Wuzi person is at the controls, it can not only ensure the safety of the passengers inside but also transport goods intact. It’s a truly epoch-making vehicle, incredible!"
"Uluu’s ideas don’t stop there."
Yaopu spoke on behalf of the Wuzi Geologist. "He wants to use the Flower Boat to reclaim the abandoned farmlands. By planting Green Roses to protect the fields, he plans to gradually restore the cultivation areas outside the city."
Huangjue sighed in admiration. "Indeed, that is the long-term solution. Crystal City will surely be revived, and the Flower Boat will become an extension of the city itself."
Uluu breathed a small sigh of relief.
Although he had met many Heroes while following his teacher, Fabiani, this was the first time he had to face them alone.
If his teacher’s wife, Lady Yaopu, hadn’t been there, he felt he definitely would have failed to explain things clearly.
But whether it was recruiting and assimilating the locust swarms or building Flower Boats to expand the rose plantings outward, it all relied on Crystal City’s own strength, and manpower was inevitably scarce.
However, when it came to connecting with and attracting the outside world and leveraging Crystal City’s inherent advantages, Lady Yaopu had taken a crucial step.
Uluu believed that what she had done laid the foundation for everything that followed.
"Let me talk about my progress as well."
Yaopu tapped her forehead with her Finger Armor, and the static inside her helmet subsided a little.
"A short while ago, I officially reached an agreement with Association Leader Qubiluo’er of the Yao City Divine Hall Council, Prophet Shi Bao of Yan City, the mayor of Tonghai City, and Mayor Chapman of Saniluo."
"Crystal City’s Ghost Hall will now be held regularly in three cities."
"The lecturers will all be experienced Ghost remnants of the Empire. The Fifth Fearless Empire was highly accomplished in military science, pharmacology, architecture, and casting and Refining, so the lecturers will teach courses on these subjects, passing on the valuable knowledge accumulated by the Empire."
"In return, the participating cities will pay a fee, part of which will go directly to the lecturers. Outstanding speakers will be hired as Professional Ghost Lecturers. They will not only teach in Crystal City’s lighthouse but will also go on speaking tours to the various cities."
Yaopu paused before continuing, "This way, Crystal City’s nearly one hundred thousand resident Ghosts can all put their skills to use. As long as they possess knowledge and experience, they can convert it into wealth, fame, and dignity."
"The valuable knowledge left behind by the Empire shouldn’t be buried. It’s best for it to circulate."
She smiled. "By combining our individual efforts, Crystal City is sure to experience a swift Rebirth. With the added direct income from glass products, this city will get better and better, far surpassing how it was during the time of the Empire."
"When that time comes, this place might not be any weaker than Yao City or Yan City."
As the three were discussing how to further utilize the Empire’s legacy, a brilliant white light flared from the Ghost Lighthouse.
"This is..."
After confirming it again and again, Yaopu cried out in delight, "A Wonder! Crystal City has given birth to a new Wonder!"
"It’s... the Ghost Academy."
"The Ghost Academy! The God has bestowed a name!"
All three of them grew excited.
They could all clearly feel that the Ghost Academy, which had evolved from the Ghost Lighthouse, possessed a power far greater than before. This would be the symbol of Crystal City’s rise from the ashes.
