Chapter 196 191: The Last King
Pinkman would never forget the day he was anointed.
When he opened his eyes, he saw a crowd of people surrounding him. Every one of them offered him a kind and envious smile, doffing their hats in respect. They praised him as a Blessing from God, a child of destiny.
Pinkman was the designated next King.
He possessed the noble pink bloodline, a Chosen One the Rose Kingdom had not seen in centuries. He inherited the name exclusive to the pink bloodline and was known as Pinkman III.
In the Rose Kingdom, the King and Queen must consist of one human and one Rose Envoy. Together, the two of them maintained the Kingdom's function and Order.
The current King was Reid XV, and he had a human wife as his queen. Under their joint rule, the roses flourished, and the people lived in peace and prosperity. The Kingdom's territory had expanded to cover nearly half the continent—a feat no previous King had ever achieved.
Everyone looked forward to the future, certain that under the leadership of Pinkman III, the Rose Kingdom would achieve unprecedented glory and cover the entire continent with roses. On that day, every Witch in the wild and every monster would have to obey the laws of the Kingdom.
The mere thought of such a grand spectacle was enough to fill one with excitement.
Whenever the common people saw the crown prince, they greeted him with great enthusiasm.
But Pinkman was troubled.
He knew he was not good at—nor did he enjoy—governing a country. He disliked managing people and hated punishing them. All he wanted was to be left alone to quietly tend his roses.
Pinkman had a very smart big dog named Woof-Woof. Woof-Woof could always spot diseased roses or invading insects, promptly sounding the alarm with its barks.
Every day, he would take his dog for a walk, care for the roses in the garden, feel the forest breeze, cross the stream, and lie in the grass to bask in the Sun, letting the day slowly drift by.
This leisurely life did not last long.
When he turned twenty-five, Pinkman was informed that the old King had decided to abdicate and let him rule the country. It was not that the King was old, but that he believed Pinkman would bring a different kind of future to the Kingdom.
The old King said, "When I was your age, I was dueling my father, Reid XIV. Do you know why?"
Pinkman said he did not.
"For a Witch."
"She possessed both beauty and Wisdom, and her charm was irresistible."
The old King stroked his red hair, a nostalgic look on his face. "I was too young then. I didn't know that the more perfect something is, the more it is meant to be admired from afar, not possessed."
Pinkman suddenly recalled the scandalous rumors from the Court. He asked, "The Witch you're speaking of… is she Lady Isabelle Ceroli?"
He had seen her portrait on the Court walls. This Witch's likeness was displayed in the section for Court Wizards; the woman in the painting was elegant and serene, a true beauty. But she had left the Court over a hundred years ago and had not been heard from since.
"Yes, Miss Sailor Li…"
A trace of melancholy appeared on the old King's face.
"Back then, it wasn't just me. My father and my mother also admired Miss Sailor Li greatly. Of course, that wasn't a problem. It's only human to love beauty. We competed for her fairly."
Pinkman didn't think it was a problem either.
For a Rose Envoy, love was a broad and open emotion. Falling in love with a person or a flower was a perfectly natural thing.
The only restriction was that Rose Envoys could not marry each other.
If Rose Envoys were to unite, there was a high probability they would produce the most troublesome of all: the black bloodline.
A Black Rose Envoy was born with a desire for destruction. They were characterized by Madness and ferocity, and upon their birth, they would hunt other Rose Envoys.
This rule was for the continuation of the entire Race, as well as for the peace of the world.
Therefore, the next generation of Rose Envoys were either born naturally from roses or born from the union of a Rose Envoy and a human.
Pinkman himself had been born naturally from a rose. As the bearer of an extremely rare and noble pink bloodline, he was considered a Blessing from God.
After becoming King, Pinkman could no longer travel as he pleased.
The Court Wizards, worried for his safety, never left his side.
The only place Pinkman could be alone was in his own Rose Garden.
Following the tradition for every King, Pinkman fulfilled his duty and married a human partner.
The queen had a pair of incredibly spirited eyes. When he told a joke, she would laugh.
Pinkman loved her very much.
Before long, they had two children.
A little human boy, and a little Rose Envoy girl.
The little boy loved dogs, just like Pinkman. The little girl, though only of the common red bloodline, was cheerful and lively like her mother.
It was only then that Pinkman slowly began to think that being King wasn't so bad after all.
His ministers handled all the tedious daily affairs. Only major issues were brought before the King and Queen for a final decision.
Then, one afternoon, the sky suddenly went dark.
Pinkman thought it was just the prelude to an ordinary thunderstorm.
He never imagined it was the beginning of an endless nightmare.
Lightning flashed and thunder roared across the sky. Divine Power reverberated between heaven and earth, and Divine Miracles appeared one after another. The land was torn asunder, and the Sun never rose again.
Pinkman prayed to God with solemnity and devotion.
The great Dike Builder did not answer.
Endless darkness crept into every corner of the world. As if alive, it dragged people in one by one, and not even fire could completely dispel it. Monsters crawled out of the dark, preying on all living things.
The Rose Envoys all joined the battle to defend the Kingdom.
They could clearly sense the Dike Builder growing weaker, while the name of the Dark God spread far and wide. This powerful God from an Exotic Realm had descended, and His conquest of the world seemed inevitable.
Only a God can fight a God.
The ministers and Court Wizards devised a plan: to create the Immortal Coffin. It would allow powerful Rose Envoys and a select few others to survive the calamity, endure the long years, and await the coming of a new age.
As King, Pinkman was the primary royal bloodline to be preserved for the Kingdom.
His noble status as King, combined with the hope and infinite potential carried by his pink bloodline, was the key to the Rose Kingdom's future revival.
"His Majesty the King, your safety is of the utmost importance. Please, enter the coffin and sleep. We will help the queen, prince, and princess enter their coffins immediately as well, to wait for the future alongside you."
"Please, carry everyone's hopes and endure for now."
"As long as you live, the roses will bloom again."
The queen, holding their children, smiled at him.
The coffin lid slowly closed.
In that instant, Pinkman felt that something was wrong, but he couldn't put his finger on it.
The Immortal Coffin quickly sent him into a deep slumber.
The world's destruction seemed to fade into a long, forgotten dream.
...
Pinkman knew he was not decisive enough, nor was he brave. He was by no means a wise Monarch.
The old King Reid XV once told him, 'Don't worry. Just by doing nothing, you're already more competent than many past Kings.'
In times of peace, this was true.
In the History of the Rose Kingdom, there had been many ambitious kings and queens who took all sorts of mad measures: making people feed roses with Blood, forcing Rose Envoys to marry monsters, and even cultivating special Black Rose Envoys for external expansion...
Most of these policies plunged the nation into violent turmoil and endless civil strife, bringing the Kingdom to the brink of collapse several times.
By doing nothing, Pinkman had already surpassed half of the old Kings.
But when the world was undergoing an unprecedented cataclysm, a time when even Gods would fall, he became terrified and anxious. He didn't know what to do. His mind was a muddled mess, and he was simply pushed along by his ministers and the Wizards.
When he opened his eyes again, he found himself in a completely new and different world.
The darkness had dissipated. The long-lost sunlight shone on him once more, allowing Pinkman to breathe freely again.
The mysterious Wizard who had been missing for many years, Lady Isabelle Ceroli, was hovering before him on a Magic Staff, like another dream from which he couldn't distinguish truth from fiction.
"The Rose Kingdom has fallen…"
She explained how the world had changed.
The tangled mess of Pinkman's thoughts finally began to clear.
He finally understood what had felt so wrong back then. It was the way the queen had held their children so tightly, and the smiles on the faces of the ministers and Court Wizards.
Because of Eternal Love, he shared a connection with his queen and children. But now, his heart felt utterly empty. They were completely gone.
With the world in turmoil and Dark Creatures running rampant, there were neither the materials nor the time to craft extra Immortal Coffins.
They only wanted to save the King.
He, the last bloodline of the Rose Kingdom, the sole remaining ember, was to descend into the depths of the earth.
He was everyone's hope in the darkness, and the last shred of dignity and decency for the Rose Kingdom.
...
Before he closed his eyes, the Kingdom was on the verge of destruction. Everyone trembled in despair before the Divine Power of the Dark God, each and every person struggling on the brink of death.
After he opened his eyes, the land had been reborn. The Yao God had repaired the world, and the sky and sea were vibrant with life once more. But everything of his Kingdom had vanished like smoke.
A strange God, a strange world, a strange land.
His loved ones and friends were all gone with the wind.
He was all that was left: the lonely Monarch of a fallen kingdom. He was like a child who had walked through the wrong door, only to find there was no way back home.
Pinkman desperately wished this was just another long dream.
He wished he would wake up to find the queen combing her long hair at her vanity, the children chattering at the door, and his big dog Woof-Woof wagging its tail, waiting for its master to take it out. Outside the window, the Rose Garden would still be dazzlingly beautiful under the Sun.
'How wonderful it would be if that were true.'
...
Pinkman could no longer find any meaning in his own existence.
He raised his head, his lost eyes gazing up at the heavens, pleading with God to grant him an answer.
