Chapter 143 - 138: The Orthodoxy of Yan City Lies with the Pirates
Luh Yao focused his view above the pirates’ heads.
He had never seen pirates before the new Era. The closest thing had been the former East River Tribe.
This band of pirates advanced and retreated with discipline; they looked well-trained.
After landing, they used spears and arrows to break through the line of slave soldiers with practiced coordination. Once victorious, the pirates seized two galleys docked at the pier, set the port ablaze, and then retreated by sea.
The raid had completely destroyed an important port west of Yan City. The pirates had captured two galleys, appearing experienced and tactically sound.
Meanwhile in Yan City, the Slave Traders were still bickering in the council. The pirates were already breathing down their necks, yet none of them wanted to spend any money.
Luh Yao continued to observe the pirates.
The pirate fleet sailed north, arriving at a New Continent. All five ships sailed into a calm strait and came to a stop.
At the edge of the strait was a simple pier, surrounded by thatched huts and wooden houses. It looked like the pirates’ main base.
Luh Yao estimated there were several hundred pirates.
The pirate leader was named [Tonghai]. He was tall, wore a round helmet and heavy Copper Armor, and carried an iron hammer on his shoulder.
A dialog box popped up over his head: "You all did a damn fine job today!"
"We burned the port to the ground this time, so they won’t be able to rebuild it anytime soon. Our future operations will be much easier! The slave ships will have nowhere left to hide!"
The pirates erupted in cheers.
"Divine Hall Army, Divine Hall Army!"
Tonghai looked behind him and said, "Commander, what’s our next move?"
An old man hobbled over, leaning on a cane.
Luh Yao was surprised to see that the name above the old man’s head was [Shang Li].
Philos had said he died in a shipwreck, likely the victim of a sinister plot by the Slave Traders. Who would have thought he’d escaped Overseas.
From the looks of it, Shang Li was the real mastermind behind this group. It was no wonder the pirates had been able to destroy the port and swiftly capture the galleys.
Shang Li was now eighty-two years old.
Luh Yao clicked to inspect him.

...
Shang Li’s history was brief, but every line represented an adventure.
Luh Yao took a sip of hot tea.
Once one of a pair of rising stars alongside Yulian, the man who had built Yan City into a beacon for humanity, Shang Li had nearly been killed by a traitor in his old age.
The tenacious man was well past eighty, but he clearly wasn’t ready to admit defeat.
Shang Li spoke. "Next, we will continue to dispatch ships to patrol the waters near Yan City."
"No need to attack. Simply appearing will be enough to strike fear into their hearts."
"Under immense pressure, their internal conflicts will erupt, and they’ll start blaming each other."
"We need to keep applying pressure, continue to free all the slaves and return their freedom, and fly the banner of the [Northern Divine Hall Army]."
Then Shang Li asked, "Has the Dark Sun appeared recently?"
"It has."
A smiley face symbol appeared over Tonghai’s head. "But Apostle Isabel took action. She drove away the Dark Sun, and it’s now hiding in the Sun. It’s much safer now."
A light bulb icon appeared over Shang Li’s head.
"Apostle Isabel has appeared... The God, the God has returned!"
The old man immediately fell to his knees, a crying emoji appearing over his head. "Lord God, your incompetent follower failed to protect Yan City, allowing the city to suffer decades of disaster..."
Seeing this, the other members of the Divine Hall Army also knelt and prayed.
"Due to my negligence, my ship was sunk, causing the foundation built in Yan City over many years to be destroyed in an instant. It was transformed into a degenerate city that treats people as commodities... My sins are heavy."
"I swear I will make up for my failures and make Yan City great again!"
Luh Yao felt as if he had seen that phrase somewhere before.
He couldn’t quite recall where.
’Oh well.’
’Once the population grows and the little people’s intelligence develops, internal conflicts and divisions are bound to arise,’ Luh Yao mused.
’Should they focus on commerce or agriculture? Should the city expand rapidly or consolidate its foundations? War or peace? Who is right, and who is wrong?’
’The pixel people themselves must decide and create their future.’
Luh Yao was the one who set the basic rules, and he was also the final arbiter.
Aside from his Blessings, he provided the little people with a path for advancement on the Extraordinary Side. For instance, becoming a Hero, a Prophet, or even an Apostle—as long as the little people were qualified and capable, everyone had a chance.
Luh Yao’s main sphere of influence was the Extraordinary Side. He would only intervene directly if the pixel people’s society experienced a crisis of Faith or a drastic population decline.
Take the slave system, for example. It seemed he wouldn’t need to intervene himself now.
Shang Li was launching a continuous assault on the Slave Traders.
Luh Yao rubbed his neck.
He suddenly realized someone seemed to have gone completely under the radar.
Selena was holding down the fort in Yao City and maintaining stability, Philos was running around gathering intelligence... but what about the Snowman?
What was the Snowman up to?
Luh Yao entered the Divine Hall and clicked on the Snowman’s portrait.
The view was no longer the southern cape where the Divine Hall Army was based, but the far north. It was a cold, white world, filled with icebergs and trees laden with thick snow.
The Snowman was hidden in a pile of snow, seemingly observing something in secret.
Luh Yao typed above its head.
—?
The Snowman shivered. "Lord God, you’re here?"
"Jimmy has traveled the whole world just to present you with a gift when you returned."
"But the world is more barren than Jimmy could have imagined. Most monsters can barely feed themselves, and Jimmy can’t enter the Abyss..."
"Fortunately, after many years of effort, Jimmy found something good."
"It was in a Giant Monster Nest!"
"No treasure can escape the Snowman’s eyes or flee from the Snowman’s mittens."
The Snowman pulled a black, oval sphere from its belly.
Luh Yao clicked his mouse, and the object flew into his Artifact Bar.
He opened it to take a look.
...
[Dragon Egg]: Speed -10.
...
Luh Yao cast [True Sight Curse] and aimed it at the [Dragon Egg] again. After consuming 500 Faith, he immediately received a more detailed description and stat panel.
...
[Dragon Egg]: Speed -10.

[Rule Seal]

[Hatching Brand]
Dark Star (1478/13333)
[Hatching Brand]
Snowman Jimmy (3389/13333)
...
’So this is the [Dark Sun Dragon] from the world update notification?’
Luh Yao pondered.
’According to the normal course of events, this egg should have hatched under the Dark Sun. Then the Dragon would have begun a rampage, leading countless monsters and becoming a natural disaster of sorts.’
’But while it was still in egg form, the Snowman sniffed it out and snatched it up.’
The Dark Star in the sky had been beaten so badly by Isabel that it didn’t dare show its face, and now the Dragon Egg on the ground had become the Snowman’s prize.
The two key elements of the new Era had been choked off before they could even get started.
It was then that Luh Yao understood.
The Snowman had been hiding in the snow to incubate the egg.
It was trying to hatch a Dragon.
Something that sounded so absurd seemed to become perfectly normal when it came to the Snowman.
Luh Yao tossed the Dragon Egg back to the Snowman, reminding it to incubate the egg well and stay safe.
