Chapter 96 - 91: Maritime Invasion
After some thorough investigation and a few questions, Luh Yao got a clear picture of Jimmy’s situation.
He was a Hero born from among the Snowmen. Just as Jimmy himself said, he had done what no other Snowman had ever done before and had successfully infuriated the Dark God.
Although the reason was slightly different from what Luh Yao had anticipated, the Snowman was still well worth the cost.
In terms of combat role, the Snowman leaned toward a spell-casting Mage, having mastered two active ranged skills: [Snowball] and [Blizzard].
In Luh Yao’s eyes, however, its core value was still [Hand of Fire Stealing].
This exclusive ability of Jimmy’s was high-level, with its effect and speed linked to the ability’s level. The Snowman had even succeeded against the Dark God’s Divine Hall, a testament to its proficiency and power.
Luh Yao assigned the [Ghost White Horse] to the Snowman to increase its speed, then tossed it into the [First Floor of the Black Abyss] to start its thieving spree.
Targets: Ghouls and Corpse Hunters.
To be safe, Luh Yao had the Snowman stay clear of the area where the Demigod, Tyrant, was located, and start with the weaker mobs on the outskirts.
From that day forward, a furtive Snowman roamed the [First Floor of the Black Abyss].
Luh Yao watched from his god’s-eye view.
Jimmy tiptoed through the Abyss, searching all around for a target.
Ahead, a Ghoul clawed its way out of the ground. It slowly straightened up and began to walk across the ground, as if stretching its limbs.
The Snowman made its move!
Jimmy fell in behind it, his steps gradually synchronizing with the Ghoul’s until he looked like its very shadow. The Ghoul was completely unaware it was being stalked.
Then, the Snowman raised its twig-like arm.
The red mitten on the end of the twig pulled gently to the left and right, opening a slit in the Ghoul’s shadow.
The Snowman reached its hand into the opening, fumbled around for a moment, and quickly pulled it back out.
It seemed to have come up empty-handed.
Jimmy quietly retreated to find his next target.
Soon, the Snowman had its sights on another Ghoul.
This Ghoul’s level, however, was astonishingly high. It was LV 55, even stronger than the Corpse Hunters the Blood Knight had previously killed.
Jimmy once again spread his hands, slicing open the shadow behind the Ghoul and reaching inside.
An exclamation mark suddenly lit up above his head.
"Theft successful!"
The Snowman slowly pulled something out.
It was a piece of white cloth with a blue border, looking much like a handkerchief.
...
[Count’s Handkerchief LV2]: Damage +1, Defense +1.
A personal belonging of the Withered Count.
...
Luh Yao’s eyes lit up.
’He actually got something!’
’In that case... steal everything you can!’
With this, Luh Yao changed his grand strategy for the Abyss.
The previous strategy was to brute-force the dungeon and seize loot by violence.
Now, everyone would be in service of enabling the Snowman’s ability! The Snowman was the absolute core within the Abyss, and everyone else would support its operations.
The more Luh Yao looked at the Snowman, the more he liked what he saw.
’Jimmy, you’ve done well. Very well indeed.’
[Hand of Fire Stealing] consumed 500 Mana per use, so even at full strength, the Snowman could only steal three times.
It wasn’t successful every time, either. With a high-risk ability like this, failure was the norm.
Fortunately, equipped with the [Ghost White Horse], the Snowman’s safety was guaranteed, making it very difficult to detect.
Furthermore, its natural Mana Value regeneration was very slow and took a lot of time.
Having the Snowman steal its way through the entire first floor of the Abyss would be a long-term job that required patience. For the Snowman’s safety, he couldn’t rush it.
After making arrangements for Jimmy, Luh Yao turned his attention back to the world outside the Abyss.
...
Isabel brought Luh Yao some good news.
"My Lord, after this recent period of combat and insight, I have become more proficient in my use of the [Forest Sword], and it has improved slightly."
Luh Yao clicked on Isabel’s Divine Hall icon.
With the enhancement from the [Forest Sword], her stats had risen once again.
...
[Apostle Lv26] Forest Sword Isabelle
Life Value: 325/325
Mana Value: 615/615
Damage: 44
Defense: 42
Speed: 19
...
Most importantly, the [Forest Sword] had been upgraded to LV2. Its stats had increased across the board, with the buff now granting Damage +20, Defense +20, and Speed +4.
Luh Yao had always been optimistic about the Holy Sword’s growth potential.
However, he was a little worried about Isabel’s Life Value.
The Blood Knight had a health pool of nearly 4,000+, and the Deep Sea Lord had over 3,000 Life Value. In comparison, Isabel was far too fragile.
While her defense and speed were excellent, she could easily find herself in danger if she encountered special Faith-based attacks.
For example:
If she were hit by a Divine Player’s Miracle, it would theoretically only take nine [Lightning] strikes to kill Isabel. The cost would be as low as 180 Faith.
Of course, that was assuming the player could lock on to her accurately. If Isabel maintained her high speed, a Divine Player’s Miracle would be very difficult to land.
Luh Yao expressed his concerns to Isabel.
"I am truly sorry, My Lord. My weakness has caused you worry."
Isabel knelt on one knee. "Please rest assured. From now on, I will focus on increasing my vitality and will strive to comprehend the relevant abilities."
Only after her explanation did Luh Yao understand.
It turned out that as she had leveled up, Isabel had been specializing in the [Wisdom] ability. As a result, her [Wisdom] score was equal to her personal level, reaching an astonishing 26.
Luh Yao was a bit confused. ’Apostles can freely allocate their stat points when they level up?’
He asked the Blood Knight and the Snowman.
As it turned out, both of them said that their method of growth could not be self-determined; it was innate.
Only Isabel was capable of it.
She possessed some kind of special trait.
But Isabel was his Apostle, connected to him by the Fire of Faith; she was trustworthy.
Luh Yao wasn’t concerned.
He had already halted work on the [Golden Field] and was now busy looting the [Black Abyss]. Even if the Forest God had left some trick up its sleeve, it had no chance to cause any trouble.
After adjusting her growth focus, as long as she continued to level up, Isabel’s health would grow rapidly and she wouldn’t always be so fragile.
Just then, a commotion broke out in Yan City.
The pixelated little people were all talking at once, with expressions of fear and unease appearing above their heads.
"The Killing Fish in the sea are terrifying."
"Three galleys have already been rammed and sunk by the Killing Fish. They ate dozens of people. We can’t go to the deep sea to the west anymore, sigh..."
"Damn it, even the East Sea Clan’s Sea Monsters can’t fight them! Arrows have no effect. We need stronger weapons! We’re too weak!"
"For now, no one should go west. Safety first."
Everyone in the city was talking about the same thing.
Luh Yao sent Isabel to learn more about the situation. She quickly gathered all the details.
"My Lord, according to Mayor Yulian, an unidentified school of fish suddenly appeared in the sea not long ago."
"These fish have sharp horns and are ferocious by nature. When they encounter the fishermen’s galleys, they attack immediately. They can gather in a very short time, becoming an incredibly powerful force."
"After sinking a ship, they feed on the humans. These fish don’t just attack humans; they also attack and prey on all other creatures in the sea."
"The fishermen all say these fish have no natural predators in the ocean. They mostly lurk in the deep sea, but they can keenly detect ships on the surface and then launch swift attacks."
"The East Sea Clan’s Sea Monsters fought these schools of fish, but were defeated and killed."
"Because these fish have an instinct for hunting humans, the fishermen of Yan City have named them Killing Fish."
"The number of Killing Fish is increasing rapidly, and the deep sea region of the Western Continent has already become their territory. The schools are now expanding to the east and north."
"At present, Yan City has no way to deal with the Killing Fish. After discussing it, Yulian and Shang Li have decided to temporarily close off the sea. They paid a heavy price to capture a few Killing Fish and are now studying ways to deal with them..."
Luh Yao carefully read through Isabel’s report.
He realized the pixelated little people had matured.
In the tribal era, the little people would have certainly gathered before the Divine Hall, praying earnestly for him, their God, to intervene. This would have been true not only for the common folk, but for the Prophet as well.
With the development and progress of their civilization, the little people’s intelligence had improved, and their cognitive abilities grew daily.
After experiencing many hardships and upheavals, a new generation of Heroes like Yulian had begun to lead the populace. They had learned to use knowledge to solve problems, and their capacity for independence far surpassed that of their ancestors.
As their guardian, Luh Yao felt as if he were watching an infant learn to crawl, and his heart filled with gratification.
Although the little people had not petitioned their God, Luh Yao realized this matter wasn’t simple. There had to be a reason for such a powerful species to suddenly appear in the sea.
He shifted his perspective and, just as Isabel had described, found a small, makeshift pool by the shore.
Inside the pool were two small white fish.
They somewhat resembled swordfish, with long, sword-like bones on their heads, and their bodies were composed entirely of white bone. The two fish were ferociously ramming the stone enclosure of the pool, trying to break out.
Luh Yao double-clicked on a Killing Fish.
...
[Bone Fish LV2]
Life Value: 33/33
Mana Value: 12/12
Damage: 4
Defense: 2
Speed: 5
[Submerge]
Submerge in water, doubling movement speed.
[Skeleton Creatures]
A life-form composed of bones. Its strength is related to the number of bones and the level of the original creatures before their death.
...
’Just as I thought. Something fishy is going on.’
Luh Yao rolled up his sleeves, his gaze turning sharp.
’Let’s see who’s stirring up trouble down there.’
