Chapter 67 - 62: Broken Magic Potion Crucible
"The naval blockade of the southern islands was a decision made by the previous Clan Leader of the East Sea Clan. The old Clan Leader, Hibit, devised the entire plan along with Prophet Hai Chengyao."
Hemira cautiously explained, "I’m not trying to make excuses, but that’s just how it was. I was still very young back then..."
Luh Yao remembered the woman whose breath carried the stench of blood.
Hai Chengyao, the very same Yuyao who had crossed over into the real world.
According to Hemira’s account.
The old Clan Leader and the Prophet were in agreement: Mingyue Island was too close to the East Sea Clan, and its inhabitants, the Mingyue Tribe, were staunch heretics. They could not be allowed any opportunity to grow stronger.
Hence, the naval blockade was executed with unwavering resolve.
Compared to the Garlic Tribe’s galleys, the East Sea Clan’s dugout canoes were mere toys.
But everything is relative.
In the eyes of the Mingyue Tribe, the East Sea Clan’s Shipbuilding Technique was a hallmark of an advanced civilization.
The Mingyue Tribe couldn’t even build dugout canoes. With Sea Monsters lurking menacingly in the waters, the tribe’s little people didn’t dare set foot in the sea, leaving them trapped on the island.
The Bright God had once unleashed his fury, using lightning and Hurricanes to intimidate the ships of the East Sea Clan and the Sea Monsters.
But the East Sea Clan was unafraid. Even if it meant their ships were destroyed and their people killed, they continued to enforce the blockade. The East Sea Clan constantly sacrificed lives to exhaust the Miracles, leaving the Bright God powerless against them.
While these clashes raged at sea, the island’s environment continued to deteriorate.
The number of [Beggar Grass Monsters] multiplied, rapidly destroying the Mingyue Tribe’s crops. They even uprooted the island’s berry bushes, causing the natural food supply to dwindle rapidly.
Soon, the Bright God could no longer spare any attention for the sea; He had to focus all His energy on dealing with these seemingly unkillable little monsters.
Lightning and Earthquakes constantly bombarded the island, striking fear into the hearts of the East Sea Clan members watching from the sea.
However, this did not last long.
Eventually, Mingyue Island fell silent.
The island, once lush with vegetation and blessed with a pleasant climate, became a silent, brownish-yellow wasteland.
Occasionally, rats could be seen by the shore, gnawing on pieces of wood and skeletal remains washed up by the tide. When driven by extreme hunger, the rats resorted to cannibalism.
Due to the scarcity of food on the island, these frenzied rats began to venture into the ocean. Although they couldn’t swim far, they learned how to catch fish in the sea.
Only, there was no longer any trace of humans on the island, nor did any divine Miracles ever manifest again.
The East Sea Clan understood: the Mingyue Tribe was likely wiped out.
The Bright God had abandoned this place as well.
With no potential enemies or heretical threats left, the East Sea Clan stopped coming. Many years had passed since that time.
Luh Yao couldn’t help but find the story poignant.
In any game, luck is a crucial factor. Most people’s luck isn’t great, but it isn’t terrible either. As for this player, the Bright God, one could only say his luck was just not very good...
Upon learning that Mingyue Island was now abandoned and uninhabited, Luh Yao lost his desire to explore it further.
Then, an idea suddenly struck him.
’If Ghost Souls can provide Faith, then by the same logic, shouldn’t monsters be able to as well?’
’These [Mad Traveler Rats] are so numerous. If I could turn them into my Believers and have them unleash their greatest talent—reproduction—wouldn’t that be fantastic?’
"My Lord, that cannot be done."
Isabel replied, "Only beings with self-awareness can generate the Power of Faith. The more numerous a group is, like insects, the simpler they are and the more they lack a sense of self."
"Only some monsters can generate Faith, not all of them."
Luh Yao felt a pang of disappointment.
’So this is Mother Nature’s balancing act.’
’The more complex a lifeform, the more difficult it is for it to grow and reproduce. The simpler the organism, the easier it is for it to survive in harsh environments.’
...
At eleven o’clock that night, Luh Yao finished washing up, lay down in bed, and turned off the lights.
Sleepiness came unusually early today.
He was sleeping fitfully when a faint rustling sound woke him.
He was no stranger to the sound—a rat scurrying back and forth on the windowsill outside.
In the simulator, an island of humans had been overrun by rats; in the real world, rats had never been known to back down from humans either. It was as if their motto was, ’If you dare to catch me, I dare to die.’ They were just that bold, and there were just that many of them.
Having been woken up, Luh Yao got out of bed to pee. When he came back, he habitually glanced at his computer screen.
That one glance was all it took to jolt him wide awake.
[The Garlic Tribe has presented a Sacrificial Offering.]
Luh Yao immediately clicked open the Divine Hall.
The item in the [Sacrificial Offering] slot looked like a stone bowl, which held a stone spoon within it.
He moved his mouse over the Sacrificial Offering.
...
[Broken Magic Potion Crucible]: Faith +1/hour. Can be used to concoct unstable Magic Potions.
Heat with the Fire of Faith, add one spoonful of sand, one spoonful of blood, one spoonful of salt, and one spoonful of a rotting corpse to concoct a Magic Potion. Good luck.
...
’An Artifact for brewing Magic Potions?’
This unexpected delight completely chased away Luh Yao’s sleepiness.
’Sleep?’
’Sleep my ass!’
’How old am I? How could a guy my age possibly sleep at a time like this?’
Luh Yao sat down at his computer, chugged a Red Bull, and had Isabel start preparing the ingredients for the Magic Potion.
According to the Artifact’s description, the recipe was perfectly clear: sand + blood + salt + a rotting corpse, then ignite with the Fire of Faith.
The materials were easy enough to collect. With the Garlic Tribe on hand, these ingredients were no problem at all.
The little people bustled about, loading the various ingredients into the Crucible.
Luh Yao clicked on the Crucible, and an icon appeared beside it: [Concoct Magic Potion (10 Faith)].
In other words, it cost 10 Faith to heat the Crucible once.
That wasn’t a problem.
Luh Yao had a decent amount of Faith saved up.
He clicked to begin, and a large illustration of the [Broken Magic Potion Crucible] appeared on the screen. Amidst raging flames, the grayish-green Crucible trembled slightly from the intense heat as white steam slowly rose from within.
Soon, the Crucible stopped trembling and the flames died out.
The word[Failure]appeared over the Crucible.
After Luh Yao tried seventeen times in a row, the word [Failure] was finally replaced by [Obtain Magic Potion].
He rubbed his hands together and clicked to obtain it.
A pill that looked like a lump of charcoal appeared on the screen.
...
[Madness Pill of Unknown Cause]: Causes Madness upon consumption.
...
Other than that one-line description, there was no other information.
The smile on Luh Yao’s face gradually faded.
There were no stat boosts, no detailed description of its effects.
Who would dare use such a sketchy, unlabeled product?
’What a ripoff,’ he thought.
It was even worse than the Golden Dice.
The Golden Dice might be a scam, but at least it clearly stated you had a chance to win. It wasn’t much, but it gave you a sliver of hope.
Just then, a question suddenly occurred to Luh Yao: where exactly did they get this [Sacrificial Offering]?
He had Isabel ask and soon learned that the Crucible had been excavated by the Garlic Tribe on Mingyue Island.
After Wizard Senjian appraised it, he determined it was no ordinary magical item. So, he sent it to the Divine Hall to be presented to the God as a Sacrificial Offering.
Luh Yao then discovered that the Garlic Tribe hadn’t given up on the desolate Mingyue Island. Yulian, against popular opinion, had personally taken a galley to the island, leading his fellow tribe members to explore it.
To do this, Yulian had devised a way to deal with the Mad Traveler Rats: he would throw chunks of cured meat, heavily coated in salt, into the rat swarms.
The swarm of frenzied rats would rush to snatch and devour the salty meat. After ingesting so much salt, the rats would become extremely distressed, and their fur would even begin to fall out.
The rats would then scramble for the island’s puddles, desperately lapping up water and paying no mind to the people who had landed.
The tribe’s little people who went ashore also coated their bodies in salt and scattered it wherever they went, which helped to deter the Mad Traveler Rats from attacking and biting them.
In this way, Mingyue Island was explored bit by bit.
In the island’s interior, there were some unidentified ruins and stone tablets. Because they couldn’t understand the Mingyue Tribe’s script, the Garlic Tribe couldn’t decipher the markings. This, combined with their wariness of the massive rat swarms, made their exploration of the island relatively slow.
After understanding the situation, Luh Yao immediately dispatched Isabel to the island.
’The Mingyue Tribe used to live on this island, so there must be some of their Wandering Souls here.’
’If I want to find out what happened, it’s best to ask the ones who were there.’
As Isabel used [Mourning Prayer], wisps of black smoke rose from the small island and coalesced into a roly-poly black sphere.
Isabel communicated with it for a long time before turning, kneeling on one knee, and reporting to Luh Yao, "My Lord, the Mingyue Tribe was wiped out many years ago."
"The Bright God has also fallen."
