Chapter 208: Phantom in the stairwell
The subterranean stairway carved through the living bed-rock beneath the Archon Sanctum did not descend in a straight line. It spiraled downward in staggering, geometry-defying tiers that felt less like stone steps and more like falling through layers of cold, compressed silk. The ambient violet light that had filled the sanctum narrowed into a tight, pulsing thread, hovering ahead like a guide. Vince walked at the front, his heavy leather boots clicking softly against the dark, iridescent steps. Behind him, Vetra trailed close, her slit-pupil amber eyes scanning the gloom as her crimson-scaled tail swept low against the stone. Elena followed just a step behind her, holding a glowing crystal slate, her fingers flying across its surface as she mapped the shifting spatial density. As Vince rounded a sharp, rectangular turn in the stairwell, a violet thread of light abruptly condensed into a swirling, incandescent vortex directly in his path. Vince halted, his hand instantly dropping to his hip. The light didn’t explode. It bloomed outward with a soft, audible gasp—a sound like a drawn breath after a centuries-long sleep. The violet haze coalesced, taking shape not as a mechanical interface or a glowing geometric glyph, but as a woman. And not just any woman. She floated an inch above the cold stone floor, effortlessly suspended in mid-air. Her figure was an outrageous, staggering triumph of divine architecture—possessing a waist so narrow and hips so lushly curved that they seemed to defy basic anatomy, crowned by an impossibly voluptuous, heavy bust that strained against the translucent, clinging drapes of liquid purple silk wrapping her body. Cascading hair the color of spun starlight fell past her lower back, swirling gently despite the utter absence of wind, while twin eyes of luminous, molten gold stared directly into Vince’s face. "Well," the woman purred, her voice a rich, intoxicating syrup that vibrated directly against the lining of Vince’s skull. She leaned forward, her massive chest swaying dangerously close to his face as a sultry, possessive smile curved her full, plum-colored lips. "You certainly took your sweet time getting down here, Vince." Vince froze, his breath catching in his throat. His divine senses, usually capable of reading the structural integrity of the surrounding mountains, registered nothing in front of him—no mana signature, no heat, no mass. Yet his eyes saw her with blinding, vivid clarity. "Vince?" Vetra’s sharp voice cut through the silence. She stepped around him, her hands held low. "Why’d you stop? Is there a trap?" "Look out—" Vince instinctively reached out an arm to catch Vetra before she could run straight into the floating divine entity. Vetra didn’t crash. She didn’t stumble. She walked directly through the woman’s floating, translucent silk train as if stepping through empty smoke. The Goddess didn’t even flinch. She simply giggled, a silvery, melodious sound, and floated upward, flipping upside down in mid-air to peer at Vetra’s crimson dragon-horns with amused curiosity before drifting back toward Vince. Vince stared at the empty space Vetra had just occupied, then back at the floating, impossibly busty woman who was now winking at him. "You... you can’t see her?" Vince asked, pointing a stiff finger directly at the Goddess’s face. Vetra paused, blinking her amber eyes in utter confusion. She looked at the empty air directly in front of Vince’s finger, then glanced down at the solid stone floor, then up at the cavern ceiling. "See... who? Vince, there’s literally nothing there. Not even a dust mote." "Vince, are you alright?" Elena stepped forward, her brow furrowed with deep academic concern. She reached out, gently pressing her cool palm against Vince’s forehead. "Your body temperature is normal, but your core frequency seems to be spiking irregularly. The spatial distortion in the upper spire might have caused a localized sensory echo in your optic nerve." "I am not having a sensory echo," Vince said flatly, his eyes darting back to the Goddess. The entity was currently floating right behind Elena, resting her chin casually on Elena’s shoulder while wrapping her plush, ethereal arms around Elena’s neck. She looked at Vince with a mischievous spark in her golden eyes, sticking out the tip of her pink tongue. She can’t feel me darling , the Goddess whispered, her voice echoing inside Vince’s head with a warm, tickling sensation that made his ear twitch. None of them can. I currently exist in a higher dimensional phase. To the rest of the world , I am a ghost, But the fact you can see me means that I am your reward . "She’s right there," Vince insisted, gesturing toward Elena’s shoulder. "Floating right behind you. She’s... remarkably difficult to miss." Elena slowly turned her head to look over her left shoulder. She saw only the dark, empty expanse of the stone corridor. She looked back at Vince, her expression softening into the kind of gentle, pitying concern usually reserved for the terminally ill. She quickly pulled out a small, leather-bound journal and a charcoal stylus. "Subject exhibits vivid visual hallucinations," she muttered under her breath, scribbling furiously on the page. "Likely a side-effect of sudden, uncapped divine transcendence. The mortal mind attempting to project a tangible form onto abstract cosmic noise..." "I am not hallucinating!" Vince snapped. "It’s alright, Vince," Vetra said soothingly, stepping up and patting his shoulder with a heavy, clawed hand. Her tail gave a sympathetic flick. "The air down here is old. Probably full of deep-earth moss spores. I hallucinated a three-headed swamp-drake once after chewing the wrong root. Just keep walking, big guy. We’ll get you some clean air soon." Vince pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a long, exhausted sigh. "I am going to lose my mind." Oh, don’t be so dramatic , the Goddess laughed, drifting away from Elena and floating right into Vince’s personal space. Before he could step back, she reached out. Her fingers—intangible to the physical world—passed through his clothes and pressed lightly against the center of his chest. Instantly, Vince felt a sharp, thrilling surge of warmth race through his mana channels. The golden lines of authority flickering beneath his skin abruptly dimmed, shrinking back down to a quiet, controlled hum. Vince blinked in shock. "What did you just do?" I adjusted your mana flow , she purred, floating around his back and leaning her heavy breasts against his shoulder, her phantom weight feeling like a warm, velvet blanket pressing against his spine. Your aura was beginning to spike, left unchecked you would have shaken the entire spire.
