My Taming System Makes Me Overpowered

Chapter 177: A Duty heavier than love

The heavy iron wheels of the imperial carriage rattled over the cobblestones of Oakhaven’s northern gate, its wooden chassis humming with high-tier defensive runes that pulsed faintly blue with each jolt of the road. Dawn had not yet fully broken; the sky above the gatehouse still wore the bruised violet of night, streaked at its edges with the first threads of orange.

Inside, Emily sat with her hands folded tightly in her lap, knuckles pale, her eyes glistening with unshed tears as she looked out the small shuttered window. Her fingers trembled against the fabric of her traveling cloak, and she pressed them flatter, as if stillness could hold back the ache building in her chest. The wooden slats of the window cast thin bars of shadow across her face, and beyond them, the silhouette of the man she loved stood framed against the crumbling stone of the gate.

"Go," Duke Owen commanded softly, leaning against the window frame. His voice was gentle, but there was iron beneath it, the same iron that had carried him through a hundred battles. "The barrier arrays along the northern road will mask your signature until you reach the capital’s perimeter. Do not stop for anything."

Emily reached out, pressing her hand against his through the open frame. Her palm was cold, and she could feel the calluses on his fingers, proof of a life spent gripping steel rather than parchment. For a moment neither of them said anything; the wind carried the smell of dust and dying torchlight between them.

"Please... come with me." Her voice cracked on the last word, barely more than a whisper, as though saying it too loudly might make the refusal she already expected more real.

Owen gave her a calm, reassuring smile, though something flickered behind his eyes—regret, maybe, or the particular sorrow of a man who has already made peace with an ending. He gently patted her knuckles before stepping back onto the stone pavement, putting distance between them as if to make the parting easier, though his own chest ached with the effort.

"We’ve had quite a series of squabbles lately," he said, a faint, rueful smile tugging at his mouth, "I love you, but I have a duty. Go, Emily."

She wanted to argue. She wanted to fling the carriage door open and refuse to move an inch until he agreed to come with her. But the look in his eyes silenced her—steady, resolute, already miles away in the battle he knew was coming. With a snap of the coachman’s whip, the four armored steeds surged forward, their hooves striking sparks against the cobblestones, and the carriage disappeared down the dust-covered northern highway, Emily’s tear-streaked face vanishing into the gathering light.

Owen watched until the carriage vanished past the tree line, until even the faint rattle of its wheels had faded into silence. Then, turning back toward the empty, ruined plaza, he unclasped his velvet-trimmed heavy cloak, letting it drop to the blood-stained stones behind him like a shed skin—the last piece of the man who loved, discarded now for the man who would fight. He drew his dual arming blades—forged from pure imperial cobalt steel, their edges catching the weak morning light in cold, silver lines—and let the sharp tips rest toward the ground, point down, in the old stance of men who did not expect to need them for long.

He didn’t run. He didn’t hide. Sensing three distinct, powerful mana signatures rapidly closing in on his position, Owen simply raised his chin and grinned in anticipation, the expression equal parts defiance and relief—the relief of a man finally facing the thing he had been dreading and preparing for in the same breath.

---

A sudden gust of wind kicked up leaves across the plaza as three figures blurred onto the stone overlook, their arrival so swift the air itself seemed to gasp and settle in their wake.

Beside Vince stood Lyrielle, her hands already glowing with silver high-elven magic, delicate threads of light curling around her fingers like living thread. And Livia Golraths wife—a Snow-Foxkin of breathtaking beauty, her presence somehow both soothing and unsettling. Her slender frame was clad in sleek, dark leather that accentuated her delicate white-furred ears, which twitched faintly at every sound the plaza offered. Behind her, six plush, silver-tipped tails swayed lazily through the air, drifting with a grace that belied the razor focus in her sharp amber eyes, which calculated every inch of the Duke’s stance—the angle of his blades, the set of his shoulders, the almost imperceptible shift of his weight.

"He’s calm," Livia purred softly, her voice smooth as velvet as her six tails brushed against the wind. There was admiration in her tone, and something colder beneath it. "A man who knows he’s cornered, yet stands his ground anyway. Dangerous."

Lyrielle raised her staff, the silver light around her hands intensifying, casting faint shadows across the cracked stone at her feet. Her eyes narrowed at Owen, weighing him the way a soldier weighs an old wound—familiar, but still capable of bleeding. "We can take him together, Vince. We can end this quickly."

Vince stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Owen with absolute, frigid focus, a stillness in his expression that made the air around him feel colder. He raised a single hand, signaling them to pause, and neither woman moved against it.

"Stay back," Vince said, his voice dropping into an icy register that carried the full weight of something long held and finally about to be released. "This one’s personal."

Livia offered a light, knowing chuckle, her plush tails settling behind her like a queen arranging her train. "As you wish, young one. We’ll play audience."

Vince extended his right arm. Dark, distortion-like kinetic waves erupted around his palm, condensing into a massive, jet-grey double-edged sword, the metal seeming to drink in what little light touched it. The air around the plaza grew heavy, the very gravity warping around the blade as it materialized, bending the dust motes in the air into slow, curling spirals.

Executioner’s Edge.

Right as his fingers wrapped around the hilt, a translucent, purple light flashed before his eyes, cutting briefly through the tension of the moment.

>[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]

> [Quest Condition Met: Sovereign Transcendent Elixir - Creation Complete]

> [Item stored in dimensional inventory. Would you like to consume now?]

Vince glanced at the glowing purple text hanging in the air, unreadable to anyone but him. A faint, razor-sharp smirk touched his lips as he flicked his wrist, dismissing the interface with a thought, the notification dissolving into nothing.

Consume it now? Vince thought, shifting his stance, feeling the familiar weight of the blade settle into his grip. That’d be an overkill. I plan to enjoy this.

---

High above the clouds, hidden within a dense barrier of swirling wind and high-tier camouflage magic, Duchess Rosalind hovered in silent observation, utterly still against the vast, pale sky. Her cloak fluttered softly against the wind as her glowing blue eyes peered through the cloud layer, pinning her gaze directly on the plaza below, missing nothing—not the tremor in Owen’s stance, not the cold certainty etched into Vince’s face.

Seems it’s just beginning. Let’s see the extent of your abilities, Rosalind thought, her arms crossed over her chest as she watched the standoff unfold, patience and curiosity mingling in equal measure behind her calm expression.

---

Down in the plaza, Duke Owen rolled his shoulders, feeling the familiar ache of old scars beneath the fabric of his shirt, his cobalt blades humming with dense, physical aura that seemed to answer the tension building in the air. He looked at Vince, taking in the sheer presence radiating from the young warrior, and for the briefest moment something like respect passed behind his eyes.

"I must commend your luck up to this point, boy," Owen spoke, his voice echoing clearly off the surrounding stone walls, carrying the weight of a man who had commanded armies and buried friends in equal number. "Surviving my dread commanders, and my right hand man, standing here now... impressive. But luck always runs dry. It’s the end of the line for you."

Vince rested the flat of Executioner’s Edge against his shoulder, his dark eyes burning with cold amusement, the ghost of a smile playing at the edge of his mouth.

"End of the line?" Vince replied, stepping forward as the cobblestones beneath his boots cracked under sudden kinetic pressure, tiny fractures spidering outward with each step. "For you...? Hundred percent."

BOOM!

The ground beneath Vince exploded as he ignited Vector Drive, blurring across the plaza into a streak of pitch-black light, the air splitting behind him with a sound like tearing silk.

Owen’s eyes widened, his instincts screaming as he crossed his dual blades just in time to catch the descending fury of Executioner’s Edge, the impact driving him back a full step, his boots carving furrows into the stone.

KANG!

A violent shockwave tore through the plaza, shattering every window within a hundred-yard radius, the sound rolling outward like thunder given form, and for a moment the entire city seemed to hold its breath.
