Chapter 125: I Went Black
SAMANTHA
The heavy doors of the main hall swung open, and the first of the brothers entered. Jayce staggered in, his steps unsteady, his clothes disheveled and wrinkled. His shirt was untucked, hanging loose over his trousers, and his hair was wild and unkempt, sticking up in all directions. He reeked of sex and cheap perfume, the unmistakable evidence of his debauchery. His eyes were half-lidded, as if he had just been dragged from some sordid encounter, and a lazy smirk played at the corners of his lips.
"Father..." Jayce drawled, his voice thick with annoyance. "What is this all about? I was in the middle of something important. Couldn’t this have waited?"
His gaze swept across the room, and when it landed on me kneeling in the center, surrounded by guards and nobles, his expression flickered with confusion. The smirk faded from his lips, replaced by a frown. He looked at the evidence scattered around—the vials of dark liquid, the obsidian knife, the forbidden books with their writhing symbols—and his brow furrowed deeply.
"Why is everywhere so tensed?" he asked, his voice losing its lazy edge. "What happened?"
King Lionel’s face was carved from stone, his eyes cold and unforgiving. "Samantha has been a terror," he said, his voice dripping with contempt. "She has been plotting against the royal family. She planned to assassinate you and your brothers. She intended to wipe the Cunningham name from existence."
Jayce’s eyes widened. He looked at me, then at the evidence, then back at his father. For a moment, confusion clouded his features. Then he shook his head slowly. "That’s not true," he said, his voice firm. "She wouldn’t do that. I know her. She’s not capable of—"
"Are you defending her?" King Lionel interrupted, his voice rising with anger. He stepped forward, his presence towering over Jayce. "After everything she has done? After the evidence laid out before you?"
Jayce opened his mouth to respond, but before he could, Finnian strode into the room. His expression was thunderous, his jaw tight with barely contained fury. His usual cold composure was shattered, replaced by something raw and dangerous. He walked hand in hand with his sister, Kylie, her face pale and stricken. They moved through the crowd like a storm, their presence commanding attention, parting the sea of nobles and guards.
"What has she done?" Finnian demanded, his eyes blazing. His gaze swept over the evidence—the vials, the knives, the books—and I could see the anger building behind his cold amber eyes. "What is all this?"
Vera stepped forward, her voice syrupy sweet, dripping with false concern. "Your Highness, I am so glad you’re here. I have been trying to warn the palace of this threat for days. Samantha has been plotting against the royal family. She planned to assassinate you and your brothers. She has been gathering forbidden weapons, dangerous potions, and dark knowledge from the restricted section of the library."
Finnian’s eyes narrowed. "And what proof do you have?"
Vera gestured to the items on the floor. "These were all found in her room, Your Highness. The knife used to kill angel shifters. The potion designed to weaken Lycan powers. The forbidden books on how to destroy the royal bloodline. She even admitted to threatening me when I tried to stop her."
"That’s a lie!" I screamed, my voice cracking with desperation. The words tore from my throat, raw and ragged. "I never admitted anything! I’ve never seen any of those things before! She’s lying! Can’t any of you see that?"
King Lionel raised a hand, silencing me. His gaze was cold, unyielding. "I have not yet decided how to judge this case," he said, his voice heavy with authority. "The evidence is damning, but I will not rush to judgment. Have the elders been summoned?"
"Yes, Your Majesty," a guard responded, bowing low. "They are on their way. They should arrive within the hour."
Finnian crossed his arms, his eyes boring into me with an intensity that made my blood run cold. "You say she threatened you?" he asked Vera, his voice dangerously quiet.
"Yes, Your Highness," Vera said, nodding vigorously. Her eyes were wide with feigned fear. "She said if I didn’t help her, she would have me killed. She was so angry, so bitter. She blamed the royal family for everything that happened to her. Her ex-fiancé, John, and her cousin, Amanda, sold her into slavery. She wanted revenge against all of you. She wanted to make you all suffer the way she had suffered."
Finnian’s expression flickered, something unreadable passing across his features. But he remained silent, his gaze fixed on me.
Vera pressed on, her voice dripping with false sympathy. "But there’s more, Your Highness. I believe Samantha was specifically targeting you. She saw you as the weakest of the princes, the easiest to break. She planned to destroy you first, to make an example of you before moving on to the others. She wanted to watch you crumble."
The words hit me like a physical blow. My breath caught in my throat, and I felt the world spin around me. "That’s not true!" I screamed, struggling against the guards who held me. "I never said that! I never planned anything! She’s making all of this up! Finnian, please, you have to believe me!"
But my protests were drowned out by Finnian’s sudden roar. The sound erupted from his chest like thunder, shaking the very walls of the hall. It was primal, terrifying, and utterly inhuman. His eyes blazed with fury, and I could see something shifting beneath his skin.
The temperature in the room dropped. The candles flickered, casting dancing shadows across the walls. Finnian’s body began to contort, his muscles bulging and stretching. His spine arched, and I could see something growing on his back—a dark, twisted shape that seemed to emerge from his very soul. It pulsed and writhed, like a living shadow given form.
He was transforming. Not into his wolf form, but into something else entirely. Something monstrous. Something ancient. Something that had been dormant inside him for years.
"Finnian!" Kylie cried out, reaching for him. Her fingers brushed against his arm, but he shrugged her off. "Stop! You’re losing control!"
But Finnian didn’t stop. His eyes glowed with an eerie light, and the thing on his back grew larger, darker. Shadows seemed to gather around him, swirling like a living storm. The air grew thick and heavy, pressing down on everyone in the room.
I stared in horror, unable to move, unable to speak. What was happening to him? What was he becoming? My heart pounded in my chest, and I could feel the cold grip of fear tightening around my throat.
