My Evolving Tentacle System: I Steal Talents

Chapter 68: An Offer

The bluntness of it caught him off guard, and he felt his eyebrows rise before he could stop them.

"That’s practical."

"And that’s survival." She turned away from him, looking toward the brightening sky. "I’ve spent my entire career trying to protect my people through proper channels. Following the rules. Respecting the hierarchy. And you know what that got me? A council that hates me, an Elder who’s selling us out, and an expedition that ended with everyone dead or missing."

Her voice had gone flat, stripped of the careful control she usually maintained.

"The rules don’t work anymore. Maybe they never did. All I know is that people like you, people who operate outside the system, seem to accomplish more in a week than I accomplish in a year." She glanced back at him over her shoulder. "So no, I don’t care about your methods. I care about your results."

The admission hung in the air between them, heavy with implications. This wasn’t the Grand General who’d confronted him in that infirmary room, all authority and barely contained suspicion. This was someone who’d been beaten down by circumstances until she was willing to try anything, work with anyone, if it meant saving what she cared about.

She’s desperate. Not the panicked kind of desperate, the dangerous kind. The kind that makes people do things they’d never consider otherwise.

"What happens now?" he asked.

Sera straightened her spine, visibly pulling herself back together. The moment of vulnerability passed, replaced by the calm competence he’d come to expect from her.

"Now we work. You continue building your network here in Valdris. I’ll handle the Siren side, try to contain Korith until we have enough evidence to move against her." She paused, considering. "There’s a council meeting in three days. The Elders are going to discuss formally stripping my rank. I need to walk into that room with something they can’t ignore."

"And if you don’t?"

"Then I lose my position, my authority, and any ability to protect my people from what’s coming." Her jaw tightened. "Korith will install one of her puppets as Grand General. The Consortium’s influence in Lumen will grow unchecked. And when the Empire finally decides to stop demanding tribute and start demanding our surrender..."

She didn’t finish the sentence.

She didn’t need to.

The sun had fully risen by the time they finished talking, its warmth cutting through the early morning chill and painting the city in shades of gold. Valdris was waking up around them, merchants setting up stalls and early risers hurrying through the streets on their way to work.

A normal city starting a normal day. Completely unaware of the conversations happening in shadowed alleys that would determine its future.

Sera turned to leave, then paused.

"One more thing."

"Yeah?"

"The High Chancellor made you an offer tonight. A place in her organization, access to resources beyond anything the Rat King or Vance can provide." She met his eyes, and something complicated moved behind them. "I won’t pretend I can match what she’s offering. I won’t pretend I even have the right to ask you to choose sides."

"But?"

"But I’m asking anyway." Her voice was quiet, stripped of its usual authority. "Not because I trust you. Not because I think you’re a good person. But because I think you understand something that Vex never will."

"What’s that?"

Sera smiled. It was small and tired and almost genuine.

"Power isn’t just about what you can take. It’s about what you’re willing to protect."

She walked away without waiting for a response, disappearing into the morning crowd like a ghost fading into mist. Within seconds she was gone, leaving Nacho alone in the alley with nothing but his thoughts and the weight of everything they’d discussed.

He stood there for a long moment, processing.

The Consortium. The Elders. Korith’s betrayal. Vael’s disappearance. The Empire’s plans. Vex’s offer. Sera’s desperation.

It was a lot to take in. More than he’d expected when he’d first arrived in Lumen, chasing nothing more than the promise of power and the chance to see what this world had to offer.

Things were simpler when I was just a clownfish.

He snorted at the thought and started walking, his tentacles coiling invisibly around his torso as he made his way back toward the Velvet House. There was work to be done. Information to gather. Alliances to strengthen.

And somewhere in the back of his mind, a question that wouldn’t quite leave him alone.

Power isn’t just about what you can take. It’s about what you’re willing to protect.

What was he willing to protect?

A month ago, the answer would have been simple. Nothing. No one. His only goal was survival and growth, accumulating enough strength that no one could ever trap him again.

But now?

He thought about Pip and his sister, saved by a phoenix feather that Nacho could have sold for a fortune instead. About Lizbeth, working her broken-down inn in the slums of Lumen, slowly building something worth having. About Vanessa, coming back day after day because she’d found something in his massage parlor that she couldn’t find anywhere else.

About Sera, standing alone against a tide of corruption with nothing but stubbornness and hope.

Maybe the answer isn’t as simple as I thought.

The Velvet House was still quiet when he arrived, its occupants sleeping off the night’s exertions. He slipped in through the service entrance and climbed the stairs to his room, his body finally registering the exhaustion he’d been ignoring for hours.

The bed was uncomfortable. The room was cramped. The whole building smelled like cheap perfume and desperation.

But for now, it was home.

He collapsed onto the mattress and closed his eyes, letting his mind drift toward the black oblivion of sleep.

Tomorrow there would be work. Conspiracies to unravel. Enemies to outmaneuver. A Grand General to save and an Elder council to survive.

But that was tomorrow.

Tonight, he was just tired.
