Chapter 204
Located in the prestigious academic district of Agos, the Institute of Virtue stood like a beacon of grace and propriety. Its exterior was elegant and imposing, constructed of gleaming white marble adorned with intricate friezes depicting scenes of diplomacy, courtly love, and refined arts. Tall, arched windows allowed natural light to stream inside, illuminating vast, airy hallways.
Inside, the atmosphere was hushed and serene. Polished marble floors reflected the glow of crystal chandeliers hanging from vaulted ceilings. Classical sculptures lined the halls, and lush potted ferns added softness to the stately decor.
The labyrinthine corridors led to spacious lecture halls where young women, both noble and common, learned the intricate arts of etiquette, diplomacy, rhetoric, history, economics, and courtly conduct. Portraits of illustrious alumnae adorned the walls, serving as silent inspiration.
At the heart of it all stood the Headmistress's office. Selene sat at her ebony desk, poring over parchments and ledgers. The late afternoon sunlight streamed through the high windows, catching the shimmering constellations and arcane symbols embroidered onto her deep indigo robes.
Her silver hair cascaded over shoulders, framing a pale face beneath the wide-brimmed hat. Those violet eyes, sharp and intelligent, scanned the documents meticulously.
A knock echoed through the heavy oak door.
"Come in," she called out without looking up.
The door swung open smoothly, and a woman stepped into the room. She moved with an air of effortless grace and authority, her posture regal and confident.
The guest wore a fitted bodice of deep crimson silk that emphasized her slim waist, paired with a high-slit skirt of layered crimson silk and white underskirt.
Gold lace and ruby accents adorned the gown, which flowed elegantly with her movements. Her long, crimson hair was perfectly styled, framing vivid green eyes.
Selene looked up, recognition dawning in her eyes. She rose from her chair, her robes whispering softly while she moved. "Welcome to the Institute, Your Highness," she greeted, inclining her head slightly. "It's an honor."
Elara offered a warm, practiced smile. "Headmistress Selene. Thank you." She glanced around the opulent office. "It's been too long since I last visited these hallowed halls."
Selene gestured towards a comfortable armchair opposite her desk. "Please take a sit. How may I be of service? Are you perhaps considering enrolling for the next semester? We would be deeply honored to have the first princess of Indyrge for our institute."
Elara gracefully took the offered seat, arranging her skirts. She leaned back, crossing her legs at the ankle, a picture of poise.
"The Institute," she began, her voice soft and melodic. "Still a… 'nice' place. I've heard wonderful, new things about the curriculum."
She paused, her gaze drifting around the ornate room, taking in the opulent furnishings, the magical artifacts, the sheer wealth on display.
"So many young ladies learning how to pour tea," she mused. "How to curtsey. How to… embroider." A faint, mocking smile played on her lips.
Selene's eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly. The air in the room crackled with sudden, subtle tension.
"We teach far more than that, Your Highness," Selene replied, her voice equally calm but now holding an edge of steel. "Etiquette is a language, one that opens doors to power and influence. Diplomacy shapes empires, economics fuels them. Our students are prepared not just to pour tea, but to negotiate treaties over it."
Elara waved a dismissive hand, her ruby rings glinting in the light. "Oh, I'm sure," she said, her voice dripping with skepticism.
"But truly, Headmistress… can such skills compare to the rigors of the Royal Academy? Where future rulers learn strategy, tactics, the art of war, and the true workings of statecraft?"
She leaned forward slightly, her green eyes staring. "Does the Institute teach its pupils how to wield real power? Or merely how toaccessorize it?"
Selene's smile remained polite. "Power comes in many forms, Your Highness," she countered, her voice like silk over ice.
"The Academy forges weapons. The Institute sharpens the mind that wields them. The pen can be mightier than the sword, if the hand that holds it understands the words to write. But I'm sure the heir to the throne of Indyrge didn't come here to debate educational philosophies. How can the Institute of Virtue serve you today, Princess? What is it you seek?"
Elara held the Headmistress's gaze for a moment longer, a silent clash of wills hanging in the air. Then, the tension broke as the princess inclined her head slightly, acknowledging the truce.
"Indeed, Headmistress," she said, her voice returning to its usual, melodic tone. "I have a matter of some delicacy. Something only the Institute might be able to assist with."
Elara took a deep breath, the smile on her lips becoming colder. "I find myself… concerned, Headmistress. The third princess, Rosalinda has grown rather insistent."
"I would not want her delicate sensibilities overburdened whilst she approaches the rigors of her studies at this esteemed institution," Elara continued, tracing a ruby on her gown idly.
"She's rather fond of your personal tutorship, is she not? Your guidance in 'practical affairs', 'public duties'. That sort of thing?" A faintly mocking smile played on Elara's lips.
"Of course, it would be tragic if she became overwhelmed. So difficult to get recognition for her hard work."
Her unspoken meaning hung heavy in the room.
Selene sat back in her chair, steepling her fingers. "I see."
A pregnant pause followed. Selene sighed, the sound soft but significant. "As always, the welfare of Princess Rosalinda is paramount consideration for the Institute," she stated diplomatically.
Elara chuckled. "Of course. You're always so attentive to the Crown's needs."
Selene's eyes narrowed. "It pains me to see such friction within the Royal Family," she replied smoothly. "It wastes resources and attention better spent on matters of state or academic endeavors.
A smug, satisfied look settled onto Elara's face. "You have my gratitude, Headmistress."
Selene knew exactly what the princess hinted at – the steady increase in the Institute's opulence, the ever-growing sums flowing from Crown coffers. Elara didn't know specifics, perhaps, but she sensed something unseen.
She had leverage.
It was the same dance every time. Elara requested a subtle 'misunderstanding' for Rosalinda, a late registration, a missing invitation to key events, a difficult examiner appointed, something easily plausible deniable. In return, the strategic silence about Selene's clandestine activities within the Institute, which she likely only suspected.
The silent negotiation continued in their eyes.
Selene's voice remained steady, but internally she seethed. She was trapped again, bound by the gold threads spinning between her and the heir apparent. Elara possessed knowledge she couldn't risk escaping this office.
Finally, with an imperceptible clench of her jaw, the Headmistress gave an almost imperceptible nod of assent. The bargain was struck.
"We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the Crown's daughters so thoroughly," Selene finished coldly.
Elara stood up. "I knew you'd see reason," she said, her tone infuriatingly cheerful as she adjusted her skirt. "The Institute is always such an understanding establishment. A beacon of wisdom, truly."
And with one last knowing smirk directed at Selene's sour face, the first princess turned on her heel and glided out of the headmistress's study.
The room felt abruptly hollow once Elara had exited, but Selene knew she couldn't show it. So she turned back to her paperwork with clenched fists.
