Chapter 169: The Last Relay

Thalen drove the ceramic blade through the floor needle.

The fresh thread went slack.

Pain remained inside Luke’s wrist, but the pulling stopped immediately. His fingers relaxed against the sling, and the dead fragment beneath his skin stayed cold and motionless.

"Connection severed," Luke said through a strained breath. "The old residue is still contained."

The medic checked his readings while Rhea lifted her panel away from the dead line. The scar across its surface flickered, but she kept the shield manifested as she turned back toward the platform.

The masked woman shifted her left heel.

Truth Behind Motion caught the intention before the escape plate activated.

"Left foot," Luke warned.

Rhea sent her panel across the hall.

The shield struck the side of the woman’s boot and slid it off the metal plate. Her heel came down on bare concrete as the escape sigil flashed beneath the empty space beside her.

The masked woman swept both hands outward.

Threads snapped toward Thalen and Red Hound. Two pierced the outer layer of Thalen’s armor and pulled at his shoulders, but he planted one foot and kept moving.

Red Hound closed from the opposite side. A thread tried to circle his neck, but he trapped it against the ceramic guard on his forearm and pulled once, dragging the masked woman off balance before she could release it.

Thalen reached her first.

He pinned her left forearm against the platform rail while Red Hound caught her right wrist. She bent her fingers toward one another, trying to form another pattern.

Segmented ceramic gauntlets closed around both hands.

Each finger slid into a separate locked channel, leaving no room to curl or cross. Once every indicator turned green, the rear team secured her elbows, waist, and neck.

The remaining strands throughout the hall lost their tension.

Rhea dismissed her panel before the scar spread any farther. Her braced shoulder dropped when the blue light disappeared, but she remained standing.

Luke had never seen the pale mask without an escape route until now.

She turned toward him through the narrow eye openings.

"You still kept the piece we left inside you."

Luke rested his left hand over the ceramic sleeve protecting his wrist. "You just proved it doesn’t answer you."

The mask concealed most of her expression, but she stopped fighting the restraints.

Red Hound checked the gauntlet indicators himself. "Search the platform. Nobody touches the sigil until evidence confirms it’s dead."

All four maintenance workers survived.

Two had deep punctures around their shoulders and forearms. Another temporarily lost feeling in one hand, while the worker who had fired the gun kept apologizing even after the medic explained that the thread had controlled his arm.

The willing operator was transported separately under suppression.

Luke remained in the field chair while the medic examined his arm. The fresh thread had left no mark on his skin because it never crossed the ceramic sleeve. His wrist still hurt, but the scans showed no new neurological change or additional energy pattern around the old residue.

Lauren stood close enough for their knees to touch. "You trusted Thalen to reach the needle."

"He was closer, and he knew what to do."

A faint warmth passed through partner resonance when she placed her uncovered fingers over his left hand.

Across the hall, Thalen watched the medical teams free the last worker from the severed threads. His field signals had carried him through the operation without Lauren translating a single order.

Red Hound opened the live channel to North Basin before the masked woman left the exchange.

The liaison showed Aelira the capture marker, the pale mask, and the sealed gauntlets around the prisoner’s hands. Aelira’s acknowledgment returned through the established pictograms.

CAPTURED.

ALIVE.

MASK.

NEEDLES.

RETURN.

Thalen stepped into view and gave the formal Rootkeeper acknowledgment.

Only after the liaison confirmed that Aelira had received the notice did Red Hound authorize transport.

The prisoner’s pale mask remained behind.

Bureau technicians replaced it with a featureless restraint hood before removing the original. Fine black channels covered its inner surface, linking her senses and the commands traveling through her threads to the city relay network.

A narrow data core rested between the inner layers.

The technicians moved it into an isolated reader with no outside connection. Red Hound, Luke, Lauren, Rhea, and Thalen watched from behind the evidence barrier as the archive opened.

Most of the city map was already dark. The seventeen relay sites had gone silent, and the central exchange no longer carried an active signal. One route still remained beneath the freight district, ending at an inactive steel depot connected to Route Nine.

The analyst opened the first surviving file.

[HEARTROOT TRANSFER PATTERN]

A three-dimensional model appeared above the reader. It showed the same two-anchor bridge Luke and Lauren had maintained during the transplantation, stripped of names and reduced to mechanical labels: source compression, living destination, and resonance stabilization.

The next file opened beneath it.

[RECEIVING FRAME: FINAL ASSEMBLY]

A schematic of the steel depot unfolded across the display.

Twelve empty sockets formed the outer ring, each shaped for one of the Ashline resonance units now in Bureau custody. Thread relays and corrupted root channels fed a central chamber below ground.

Lauren leaned closer. "They reconstructed the bridge."

"Enough of its structure to imitate it," the analyst said. "I can’t tell whether they used extraction data from Lethariel or readings gathered during the transfer on Earth. Either way, the model is incomplete."

Thalen touched the symbol for living root on his wrist display, then pointed toward the center of the schematic.

The analyst enlarged the image.

Something organic occupied the middle of the frame. The archive did not identify it, but black brands surrounded the outline in the same pattern the leader had spread through Lethariel.

A third line appeared.

[PRIMARY ANCHOR: ACTIVE]

Red Hound read it twice. "When was that status updated?"

"Twenty-three minutes ago."

Luke looked at the twelve empty sockets. "The Ashline units are all secured. How can any part of the gate be active?"

"The primary anchor can produce a brief, unstable opening by itself," the analyst said. "It can’t complete a permanent passage without the twelve units we recovered."

The update had traveled beneath the freight district through a hardwired line that remained silent while the city relay network collapsed.

A final recording opened.

The branded leader stood inside a circular chamber of black metal. One marked palm rested against the central frame while a narrow opening of silver-gray light trembled behind him.

The image lasted only three seconds, but something moved on the other side before the recording ended.

No one could identify the shape.

Rhea’s expression hardened. "He’s already testing it."

"The permanent frame can’t open a stable passage," the analyst said. "But the primary anchor is active, and something is answering."

Luke felt Lauren’s hand tighten around his.

The hammer wielder, decay wielder, and masked woman were all in custody. Their machinery, living fragments, and relay archive had been seized.

Only the branded leader remained free. The Bureau had taken his people and equipment, but he had kept the primary anchor hidden long enough to begin testing it.

Red Hound closed the archive and opened the steel-depot map.

"Send the full file to North Basin and lock down Route Nine. Nobody approaches the depot until we understand what the anchor is attached to."

Luke looked at the frozen image of the silver-gray opening.

The masked woman’s last relay was gone, but beneath Route Nine, the branded leader had already begun opening the door.
