To Forget and Be Forgotten

Chapter 52 – A Little Color (continued)

She was lying with her head on Liora's lap.

The sunlight felt warm and forgiving, filtering through the leaves of the old tree they used to sit beneath during the war. Liora's fingers moved slowly through Seren's hair, gentle and rhythmic, the way they always did when Seren came back from battle carrying too much weight.

"You've been so far away lately," Liora murmured, her voice soft with affection. "Come back to me."

Seren closed her eyes tighter and pressed her face into Liora's lap. For a few precious moments, everything felt safe. The kind of safety she had spent centuries chasing and never quite catching.

"I'm here," Seren whispered.

But even as she said it, something inside her began to tighten.

Her arms slowly wrapped around Liora's waist. At first it was gentle. Then it wasn't. Her grip grew firmer, almost desperate, as if her body remembered what her mind tried to forget - that peace was always temporary.

"Don't fall asleep," Seren said suddenly, voice low.

Liora chuckled softly. "I'm not sleepy, love."

But Seren's arms tightened further. Her fingers dug into the fabric of Liora's dress. The fear was rising now - slow at first, then faster. Grief had taught her a cruel lesson: happiness was the warning sign. The moment she felt safe, the moment she allowed herself to rest, something always took it away.

"Just stay awake with me," Seren whispered, almost begging. "Please. Don't close your eyes. If you sleep, morning will come. And then…"

Her voice cracked.

Liora's hand stilled in her hair.

"Seren… you're holding me too tight."

Seren knew she was. She could feel Liora's ribs beneath her arms. But she couldn't let go. This was the Fight response twisted by years of helplessness - since she couldn't fight the curse, she fought reality itself. She would hold on so hard that time itself couldn't move forward.

"I can't lose you again," Seren said, tears slipping from her eyes. "I won't survive it. Not again. I'll stay awake forever if I have to. I'll never let morning come."

Liora's voice grew quieter, sadder.

"This isn't love anymore, my heart. This is fear wearing love's skin."

The words cut deep, but Seren only clung harder. Her body began to tremble. The golden light around them started to bleed into red - the color of blood on bedsheets, the color of mornings she could never escape.

She was freezing and fighting at the same time - paralyzed by the terror of loss, yet violently refusing to accept it. Grief had broken her love into something possessive and ugly. She wasn't protecting Liora anymore. She was trapping her.

"I'm sorry," Seren sobbed, still refusing to loosen her grip. "I'm so sorry. But I'd rather break you myself than watch the world take you from me again."

Her arms tightened further. Something in her had gone past grief, past desperation - into something older and uglier that lived beneath the surface of everything she was. The part of her that wasn't human. The part that had been compressed into her bones long before she understood what she carried.

She held on.

Liora's voice came out broken and small.

"Seren-"

She held on tighter.

And then the sound.

Wet. Final. Irreversible.

Warmth spreading across her hands and forearms. The golden light collapsing into nothing. Liora's voice gone mid-syllable like a candle snuffed between two fingers.

Seren looked down.

Her arms were still holding something.

It was no longer Liora.

Seren woke up with a violent gasp, bolting upright in bed.

Her heart hammered against her ribs. Sweat clung to her skin. Her arms were still clenched tightly around nothing but empty air. For several terrifying seconds she couldn't tell if she was still dreaming.

She looked down at her empty hands.

No blood.

No Liora.

Just the dark, quiet room in Madras.

Seren curled forward, pressing her forehead against her knees, breathing shakily. The dream had felt too real. The desperation. The guilt. The particular horror of what her hands were capable of when grief stripped everything else away.

She stayed like that for a long time.

Grief had not left her. It had simply learned how to hide behind tenderness - until the moment it showed its teeth again.

And now Kavitha was slowly walking into that same dangerous space.
