Chapter 31 — Again
The last thing she remembered clearly was the fire.
Low embers. Warm light across the ceiling. Clara's breathing slowing beside her into the deep rhythm of sleep. Seren had been watching the dark above her, holding borrowed silence carefully in both hands, thinking that this was what it felt like to have something worth keeping.
That was the last clear thing.
What came after existed in fragments.
A feeling - not pain, not anger, something older than both. Something that moved through her body the way weather moved, without asking, without warning, filling every available space until there was no room left for her.
A sound she didn't make consciously.
Clara's voice - just once, just her name, the particular way she said it when something was wrong -
Then nothing.
Then the ceiling again.
Seren came back to herself the way you surfaced from deep water - slowly, then all at once, the world reassembling around her in pieces that didn't immediately make sense.
The room was wrong.
The light was wrong.
She was on the floor beside the bed and she didn't know how she'd gotten there and her hands—
She looked at her hands.
Blood.
Still warm.
She stopped breathing.
The fragments came back in broken flashes - not enough to understand, not enough to assemble into anything coherent. Just impressions. Wrong ones. The kind that lived in the space between sleep and waking where nothing had edges yet.
She already knew before she looked.
She looked anyway.
Clara.
Lying still against the pillow. Her hair spread the way it had been when Seren closed her eyes. The morning light falling across her shoulders exactly as it had every morning for weeks.
Except.
The wound near her neck.
The sheets beneath her.
The silence where breathing used to be.
"No."
The word came out without sound.
Seren moved toward her without deciding to move. Her knees hit the floor beside the bed. Her hands reached for Clara and then stopped — hovering, shaking, not touching because touching meant confirming and confirming meant—
"Clara."
Nothing.
"Clara, please."
The cottage sat around her completely indifferent. The herb shelves. The bow by the door. The two cups on the table from last night, still close together, exactly where they had left them.
Seren pressed the back of her hand against her mouth.
The fragments kept surfacing. Wrong and broken and not enough to understand but too much to ignore. Clara's voice saying her name once in the dark. That feeling moving through her like weather. Her own hands doing something her mind hadn't been present for.
The same as Liora.
Exactly the same as Liora.
Except-
She knew.
This time she had known what she was. She had known what the morning after happiness looked like. She had known and Clara had said stay and she had looked at her in the cottage light and decided that this time would be different, that wanting it enough would make it different, that-
A sound came out of her that wasn't quite a word.
She gathered Clara toward her slowly. Carefully. The way you handled something irreplaceable even after it was already broken beyond repair.
Clara was warm.
She was still warm.
"I'm sorry," Seren said.
Her voice came out wrong. Hollow. The voice of someone standing in a place past grief where nothing had settled into shape yet.
"I knew." The words fell out without intention. "I knew what I was and I stayed anyway. You said stay and I-" She stopped. "I wanted to be different. I wanted it to be different this time."
The morning light kept moving across the room.
Outside Norvale was waking up. Cart wheels. A door. Someone calling a name in the distance with the easy familiarity of a place that had forgotten what it felt like to lose people.
Seren looked at the wound near Clara's neck.
The fragments surfaced again - broken, hazy, wrong.
She looked at her hands.
She understood nothing except the result of what they had done.
She pressed her face against Clara's hair.
Herbs. Forest. The particular warmth of someone who had looked at everything Seren was and said stay like it was simple.
"You should have let me go north," Seren said quietly.
Clara didn't answer.
Of course she didn't answer.
"You knew something was wrong with me. You knew from the beginning." Her voice cracked. Held. Barely. "You're the smartest person I've ever met and you knew and you said stay anyway."
She pulled her closer.
"I stayed."
On the shelf the herbs sat in careful neat rows. Clara had reorganized them two days ago with mild disapproval at things she found out of order.
The bow leaned against the wall.
Two cups on the table.
Seren looked at all of it.
Then she looked at nothing.
Because some things were too small and too specific and too completely Clara to look at directly.
She sat with her in the morning light while the village outside continued not knowing and the wound near Clara's neck said everything Seren's mind refused to fully assemble.
She didn't move for a long time.
Not because she didn't know what was coming next.
Because she did.
The soldiers on the road. The kingdom. The name Liora that had been following her for three months like a debt she hadn't finished paying.
All of it still coming.
All of it still true.
But right now there was only this room.
This light.
Clara's hair against her face.
And the unbearable specific weight of a life that had been completely itself right up until it wasn't.
The two cups on the table.
Still close together.
Still exactly where they had left them.
