Chapter 50: The Beginning
Kai stopped blinking.
The paused frame filled his monitor like a piece of evidence laid across an interrogation table—ordinary at first glance, until you noticed the one detail that made everything else impossible.
His desk occupied the foreground. He was leaning toward his microphone, adjusting the gain with the absentminded routine of someone who had performed the same ritual hundreds of times. An empty energy drink sat beside the keyboard. The camera light reflected faintly in the black television across the room.
Everything looked exactly as he remembered it.
Everything looked normal.
Except for the hallway.
Someone was standing there.
The figure blended so naturally into the darkness that it was almost invisible. If Milo hadn’t pointed it out, Kai could have watched this recording a hundred times and never seen it. It wasn’t hiding around the corner. It wasn’t crouching in the shadows.
It was simply... there.
Watching.
Kai’s fingers tightened around the mouse until his knuckles turned white.
"I..."
His voice cracked.
"I would’ve sworn nobody was there."
"I believe you."
Luna answered without hesitation.
There wasn’t an ounce of doubt in her voice.
Not even curiosity.
Just certainty.
Slowly, Kai turned his head toward the real hallway.
It was empty.
Dark.
Silent.
Nothing stood there.
He looked back at the frozen frame.
The figure hadn’t moved.
It remained exactly where it had been, as if it had been waiting for this moment—for someone to finally notice it.
His heartbeat pounded in his ears.
He clicked the zoom tool.
The image enlarged.
Compression artifacts spread across the screen, turning smooth walls into a mosaic of blurry pixels. The silhouette nearly dissolved into digital noise.
Nearly.
Not completely.
A person.
Tall.
Motionless.
Hands hanging loosely at their sides.
Their face remained swallowed by darkness.
Chat erupted.
Messages flew by so quickly they became nothing more than a colorful blur.
ShadowToast: THERE’S SOMEONE IN THE HALLWAY
LaundryGoblin: WHAT THE HELL
HalfAsleep98: BRO CALL THE POLICE AGAIN
RatKing9000: ZOOM MORE
The viewer count surged past one hundred and sixty thousand.
It kept climbing.
Clips were already spreading across social media before Kai had even finished processing what he was seeing. Reaction channels had begun restreaming his broadcast. Thousands of people were dissecting the image frame by frame while he was still trying to convince himself it was real.
For the first time all night...
He didn’t care.
The numbers meant nothing anymore.
Without a word, Kai muted every stream alert.
Donation sounds disappeared.
Follower notifications vanished.
Animated overlays stopped popping onto the screen.
The apartment became eerily quiet.
The silence was better.
It gave him room to think.
"Kai?"
Luna’s voice broke through the stillness.
"I’m here."
"I need you to do something."
"What?"
"Scrub backward."
He frowned.
"In the VOD?"
"Yes."
"...Why?"
She hesitated for only a second.
"I want to know when they first appeared."
Kai dragged the timeline backward.
Three minutes.
Two.
One.
The recording rolled smoothly through the beginning of the stream.
There he was, carrying a mug of coffee into the room.
He yawned.
Dropped into his chair.
Adjusted the webcam.
Checked the lighting.
Nothing unusual.
Nothing even remotely suspicious.
He scrubbed back another thirty seconds.
Now the room was empty.
No Kai.
No stream.
Just a silent apartment waiting for its owner to come home.
The desk sat untouched.
The kitchen was dark.
The hallway stretched into shadow.
The television reflected an empty room.
Nothing moved.
Nothing seemed wrong.
Kai leaned closer to the monitor.
His own breathing sounded unnaturally loud.
Then—
Movement.
It was subtle.
So subtle he almost missed it.
The darkness inside the hallway shifted.
Not because the lighting changed.
Not because the camera adjusted.
Something had stepped into it.
Kai froze.
The figure didn’t appear dramatically.
It didn’t lunge into frame.
It didn’t emerge with theatrical timing.
It simply walked into view from deeper inside the apartment.
From the direction of his bedroom.
His blood turned to ice.
"...No."
The recording continued.
The figure stopped.
Turned toward Kai’s empty chair.
Then...
It waited.
Forty seconds.
Forty endless seconds.
It never twitched.
Never adjusted its posture.
Never looked away.
It simply stood there, patiently watching an empty room.
"I wasn’t even home yet."
Kai’s voice barely reached the microphone.
No one answered.
Because no one could.
The recording continued.
The apartment door opened.
Past Kai walked inside carrying his coffee, grumbling to himself about how it had already gone cold.
He kicked the door shut with his foot.
Dropped his keys onto the counter.
Walked straight past the hallway.
Straight past the figure.
Without slowing down.
Without looking.
Without noticing.
The figure never reacted.
It didn’t hide.
It didn’t retreat into the darkness.
It didn’t even turn its head.
It simply watched him pass.
As though it had been expecting him to come home.
Kai felt sick.
He watched his past self disappear into the kitchen.
A few seconds later, he returned with the same mug of coffee and sat at his desk.
The figure remained exactly where it was.
Watching.
Waiting.
His stomach twisted violently.
"I walked past them."
His whisper barely escaped his lips.
"I walked..."
He couldn’t tear his eyes away from the screen.
"...right past them."
Goosebumps spread across his arms.
He remembered that evening perfectly.
Stopping downstairs to grab his food delivery.
Complaining that the coffee had gone lukewarm.
Standing in the kitchen debating whether to stream or go straight to bed.
He remembered all of it.
Every ordinary detail.
Except this.
Because this had never happened.
It couldn’t have happened.
If someone had been standing in his hallway...
He would’ve seen them.
Wouldn’t he?
"Kai."
"I’m here."
"Tell me I’m losing my mind."
Luna didn’t answer.
Instead, she asked quietly,
"Can you rewind another minute?"
He obeyed without thinking.
The timeline slid backward again.
The hallway emptied.
The figure disappeared.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then...
It returned.
Not from the bedroom.
Not from the front door.
Not from the kitchen.
Kai felt his breath catch in his throat.
The figure stepped out from behind the bookshelf.
Except...
There wasn’t enough room behind the bookshelf for anyone to stand.
His mind instantly connected the pieces.
The maintenance shaft.
The hidden gap.
The impossible space concealed behind the shelves.
The figure emerged calmly, as though walking through a doorway only it could see.
It paused.
Turned its head toward Kai’s desk.
Then...
Waited.
The apartment suddenly felt impossibly small.
His flashlight slipped from his numb fingers.
It struck the hardwood floor with a sharp crack that echoed through the room.
The sound jolted him back to reality.
His head snapped toward the actual bookshelf.
It hadn’t moved.
The narrow gap behind it was still visible.
Dark.
Silent.
Empty.
No movement.
No footsteps.
Nothing.
Only the faint hum of electricity running through the walls.
His phone rang.
The sudden sound made him flinch.
Not another text.
Not Discord.
Not an unknown number.
Building Management.
Kai stared at the caller ID for a moment.
"They’re calling."
Luna’s voice sharpened immediately.
"Answer it."
He swallowed and accepted the call, placing it on speaker.
Before he could say hello, a panicked voice burst through the line.
"Mr. Mercer?"
"Y-Yeah?"
"This is Daniel from building management."
His breathing was ragged, like he’d sprinted up several flights of stairs.
"We need you to leave your apartment immediately."
Kai’s pulse spiked.
"What happened?"
There was a long silence.
Too long.
When Daniel finally spoke again, he didn’t answer the question.
Instead, he asked one of his own.
His voice trembled.
"Mr. Mercer..."
Another pause.
Then, in a whisper filled with confusion and fear—
"...why are you inside Apartment 7B?"
