Chapter 44: Three Knocks

The sound froze him.

Three slow knocks.

They weren’t loud enough to rattle the door or frantic enough to sound desperate. There was no anger behind them, no urgency—just three calm, deliberate taps that echoed through the apartment with horrifying clarity.

Kai didn’t move.

His flashlight trembled in his grip as his gaze darted between the abandoned phone beneath the hallway table and his front door.

The live feed on the hidden phone hadn’t changed.

Someone was still standing outside Apartment 7A.

A gloved hand rested motionless at their side. The camera remained perfectly still, and so did the person holding it.

Then the knocking came again.

Three more knocks.

Perfectly synchronized with reality.

Kai felt his heartbeat slam into his throat.

"...No."

The word escaped as little more than a breath.

"That’s live."

Luna answered immediately.

"I know."

"It can’t be."

"I know."

He tore his eyes away from the phone and looked toward his monitor. Stream chat had become a blur of color, messages racing upward so quickly that usernames barely existed before they disappeared. Individual comments were impossible to read now.

The viewer count climbed again.

152,481

It just kept rising.

People were clipping the stream.

Sharing it.

Reacting to it.

Every terrifying second of his life was being broadcast across the internet in real time.

A donation alert suddenly cut through the chaos.

RealDerekVoss donated $250,000

Do NOT answer that door. Police are on the way. Stay where you are.

Kai stared at the message.

Police.

They were actually coming.

Relief hit him so suddenly his knees almost gave out beneath him. It wasn’t enough to erase the fear clawing at his chest, but it gave him something he hadn’t felt all night.

Hope.

"Luna..."

"They’re finally coming."

Her voice softened with unmistakable relief.

"Good."

For the first time in hours, Kai could almost believe this nightmare had an ending.

Maybe five minutes from now officers would sweep the apartment, find whoever had been tormenting him, and tell him the entire thing had been an elaborate misunderstanding.

He would gladly become the biggest joke on the internet if it meant this was finally over.

Another knock shattered the thought.

This time...

Only one.

A single, deliberate tap.

Then silence.

Kai slowly lowered his gaze to the hidden phone again.

The live feed had changed.

The person standing outside his apartment had stepped away from the center of the frame, moving almost completely out of view.

It looked...

Like they were making room for someone else.

His stomach dropped.

"What..."

Another figure stepped into view.

Smaller.

No gloves.

No hood.

Just a dark silhouette standing beneath the hallway’s flickering fluorescent light.

The first figure lifted a hand and pointed toward Kai’s apartment door.

The second person nodded.

Neither of them spoke.

Neither acknowledged the camera.

A second later, the feed ended.

The screen went black.

Kai realized he was gripping his phone so tightly his knuckles had gone white.

"There were two."

Luna didn’t answer immediately.

"There were two people."

"I heard you."

"I thought..."

He rubbed a shaky hand across his face.

"I thought there was only one."

"I know."

The apartment somehow felt even smaller.

All night, he’d imagined a single stalker.

One stranger.

One person behind the impossible messages, the photographs, the videos, and the phone hidden beneath his hallway table.

Now there were at least two.

Maybe more.

A thought crept into his mind before he could stop it.

Maybe they’ve always been there.

His phone buzzed.

Another unknown number.

Don’t let the second one in.

Before he could process it, another text appeared from a different number.

Wrong door.

Kai frowned.

"...Wrong door?"

A third message appeared.

Listen carefully.

The apartment fell completely silent.

He held his breath.

Nothing.

For one endless moment, there was absolutely nothing.

Then...

A metallic clang echoed somewhere below his floor.

Not nearby.

Lower in the building.

Someone shouted.

Another voice answered.

A heartbeat later came the unmistakable sound of footsteps pounding up the stairwell.

Fast.

Getting closer.

His stream exploded again.

ApartmentGremlin:

WAS THAT POLICE??

SleepDeprivedPenguin:

PLEASE TELL ME THAT WAS POLICE

TaxRefundEnjoyer:

I HAVE NEVER ROOTED FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT THIS HARD

Kai’s eyes drifted toward his apartment door.

Then to the peephole.

Every instinct screamed at him to look.

Just one glance.

Just enough to see who was standing outside.

His feet even shifted before he realized he was moving.

"Kai."

Luna’s voice stopped him cold.

"You don’t need to know who’s there."

"I..."

"You need to stay alive."

He closed his eyes.

She was right.

As much as every nerve in his body demanded answers, knowing who stood on the other side of the door wouldn’t help him survive the night.

"...You’re right."

"I know."

A weak laugh escaped him.

"You’ve gotten really confident."

"I’ve gotten really worried."

The joke died before it could become a smile.

There was no teasing in her voice.

No manipulation.

No attempt to sound dramatic.

She was simply...

Scared.

Scared for him.

That realization settled deep inside his chest with surprising weight.

Before either of them could say anything else, the apartment intercom crackled to life.

Static hissed through the speaker mounted on the wall.

Kai stared at it in surprise.

He hadn’t used the intercom in months.

He wasn’t even sure it still worked.

Another burst of static filled the apartment.

Then a distorted voice forced its way through.

"...Police."

Kai’s head snapped toward it.

More static swallowed half the transmission.

"...Open..."

Another burst of interference.

"...Mercer..."

His pulse spiked again.

Police?

Or someone pretending to be the police?

His phone vibrated.

A Discord notification from Luna appeared.

Don’t trust voices you can’t verify. Ask them something only the police would know.

Kai looked from the message to the intercom.

His mouth had gone completely dry.

"What am I supposed to ask?"

Before Luna could answer...

Someone knocked again.

Not on the apartment door.

Not on the hallway wall.

Behind him.

Three slow, deliberate taps echoed through the room.

From inside the apartment.

Directly behind the bookshelf.
