Killer Maid’s Pride

New Mission, Baron Vane

The morning after the "Mochi Incident," Elara sat at her small kitchen table, staring blankly at a cold cup of herbal tea. Beside her, Mochi was humming a jaunty tune while sharpening a stolen silver paring knife.

"Master, you look... peaky," Mochi chirped, her ears swiveling independently. "Is the 'Baguette' acting up again?"

"Don't call it that," Elara groaned, burying her face in her hands. "And don't look at it. It’s... resting."

The HUD pinged, vibrating right against her forehead.

DAILY LOG:

Pride Members: 1/5 (Small Pack)

Active Buffs: Shadow Stalking (Rank 1)

Urgent Status: Your rent is 400 Gold Credits. Your current balance is 12 Gold Credits and a handful of stolen sugar cubes.

"Right," Elara stood up, her maid skirt swishing with professional crispness. "We need a job. Something high-paying, low-profile, and ideally, something that doesn't involve me growing any more... surprises."

They headed to the Gilded Gutter, a tavern for the "discerning" criminal. The air smelled of cheap ale and expensive secrets. Elara approached the bar, where a hooded fixer slid a folder across the damp wood.

"Target: Baron Vane," the fixer rasped. "The local Tax Collector. He’s been skimming off the Royal Tithe and keeping it in a vault protected by sound-sensitive magic. To get in, you need to be silent. To stay in, you need to be... helpful."

Elara flipped through the pages. "Undercover Maid placement? Pay is 2,000 Gold? What’s the catch?"

"The catch is his 'Lucky Charm,'" the fixer whispered. "He keeps a Rabbit-kin in the vault room. Her hearing is so sensitive she can hear a heartbeat through a stone wall. If she hears a stranger, the alarms go off. You don't just have to kill Vane—you have to neutralize the bunny."

Elara glanced at Mochi. Mochi was currently trying to pickpocket the fixer’s cloak while he was looking at Elara.

"Neutralize her?" Elara muttered. "Or... recruit her?"

H.U.D. POP-UP:

NEW MISSION DETECTED!

Objective: Infiltrate Vane Manor.

Requirement: Wear the 'Royal Maid' Uniform (+20% Charisma, -10% Mobility).

Special Goal: Claim the 'Lucky Charm' [Rabbit-kin].

Projected Reward: Passive Skill: Auditory Sensitivity.

Elara looked at the requirements and sighed. She was going to have to walk into a den of corrupt tax collectors, carrying a concealed set of silverware while managing her own newfound "biological urges" and a kleptomaniac catgirl.

"Mochi, put the man's wallet back," Elara commanded. "We’re going to a manor. And pack the heavy silver forks. We’re going for a 5-star rating on this one."

---

The gates of Vane Manor were as cold and imposing as the Baron’s reputation. Elara stood there, pulling at the hem of her apron. The 'Royal Maid' uniform was a masterpiece of lace and psychological warfare—it was tight enough to be distracting but "prim" enough to pass inspection.

Beside her, Mochi was stuffed into a large laundry hamper Elara was wheeling along.

"Master," Mochi hissed from under a pile of starch-heavy linens. "It’s cramped in here. And something is poking me."

"It’s the silver salad tongs, Mochi! Keep your tail tucked," Elara whispered back, her face flushed. "And stop sniffing the linens. We have to look professional."

The heavy oak doors creaked open to reveal the Head Butler, a man named Barnaby. He had a mustache so sharp it looked like it could be registered as a lethal weapon and a gaze that could find a smudge on a ghost.

SYSTEM CHECK:

Skill Active: 'Service with a Smile'

Current Task: The Interview.

Difficulty: Extreme (Barnaby is a Level 15 Perfectionist).

"You are the replacement for the third-floor East Wing?" Barnaby asked, his voice like dry parchment. He began to circle Elara, examining her posture. "You seem... sturdily built for a maid."

Elara’s heart did a nervous backflip. "I'm—I'm specialized in 'heavy lifting' and 'deep cleaning,' sir. Graduated top of my class at the... uh... Academy of Domestic Arts."

Barnaby reached into his pocket and pulled out a single, pristine white silk glove. He donned it with a flourish that made Elara reach for a non-existent dagger.

"At Vane Manor, we do not just 'clean,'" Barnaby declared, walking over to a nearby bust of the Baron. He ran his finger along the rim of the Baron’s marble ear. "We achieve sanctity. If I find a single mote of dust, you will not be hired. You will be tossed into the moat."

He held up his finger. It was spotless.

"Impressive," Elara managed, her 'Predator' instincts screaming at her to just poke his eyes out with a fork and be done with it.

"However," Barnaby continued, narrowing his eyes as he looked at Elara’s waistline. "You seem to be carrying a... peculiar amount of bulk under that apron. Is that a weapon?"

Elara felt her face turn a shade of red that actually started to glow. Her 'Morning Surprise' had decided that the stress of an interview was the perfect time to make a guest appearance.

H.U.D. WARNING:

Status Effect: [Inappropriate Timing]

Charisma: -15

Composure: CRITICAL LOW

New Objective: Use 'Service with a Smile' to deflect suspicion!

"It's... a rolling pin!" Elara blurted out, her voice an octave higher than usual. "I'm very dedicated to the kitchen staff as well. I like to be... prepared for all dough-related emergencies."

Barnaby stared at her for a long, agonizing beat. Mochi let out a muffled sneeze from the laundry basket.

"A rolling pin," Barnaby repeated flatly. He sighed, a sound of immense disappointment. "Standard for the East Wing. They are all lunatics. Follow me. You’ll be stationed outside the Vault Room. Do not speak to the 'Lucky Charm,' do not touch the silver, and for the love of the Gods, keep your rolling pin out of sight."

---

As they walked through the echoing halls, Elara’s Shadow Stalking (shared from Mochi) allowed her to notice things the average maid wouldn't: the pressure plates in the rug, the magical eye wards in the ceiling, and the faint, rhythmic thump-thump coming from behind a heavy, reinforced steel door at the end of the hall.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

It was a heartbeat. A fast one.

"We're close," Elara whispered to the laundry basket as Barnaby turned a corner.

H.U.D. PING:

Target Located: The Vault Door.

Passive Detected: 'The Echo' (Rabbit-kin Hearing).

Warning: Current noise level is 40 decibels. If noise reaches 60, the 'Lucky Charm' will alert the guards.

Elara gripped the handle of the laundry basket, her knuckles white. She had to get inside that room, claim the rabbit, and kill the Baron—all while looking like she was just there to fluff the pillows.

"Mochi," Elara breathed. "Phase one is a success. Get ready for phase two".
