CHAPTER 70: END OF THE SECOND NIGHT EVENT
- BOOM!
-BOOOM!
Sounds of explosions rocked the night. Despite having lost its herd, the Ruinsteed King stood tall. A green light swirled around its legs, its massive frame becoming almost impossible to track.
It dodged around swinging wolves' claws, used the long coiled bodies of the centipedes as leverage to launch its grand frame into the air, and focused mainly on killing its corrupted members.
It refused to allow the corpses of its herd to be desecrated.
Only the Elite Crawlers, who had also advanced into the First Order, were able to keep up with it, though barely.
But having single-handedly killed four of their kind, with Kael's familiar also taking one out of the equation, only five of the Crawlers remained on the battlefield.
It was such a pity Kael hadn't been able to dispatch the three he faced.
It wasn't hard for the creatures to blink away from the range of his familiar's attacks.
- ROAR!
- ROAR!
Fed up, the Crawlers raised their heads and bellowed in anger.
Instantly, the monsters on the battlefield seemed to lose any sense of coordination, as they all stormed the Ruinsteed King like a rabid avalanche of claws and corrupted flesh.
Surrounded on all sides, the regal destrier couldn't do much before several defiled creatures piled onto it, burying it beneath their crushing weight.
- SKREEEEE!
The cry of a phoenix suddenly shook the skies.
Then dozens of small phoenixes fell from the heavens like a blazing storm upon the war-torn ground.
- BOOM!
- BOOM!
- BOOOM!
The monsters were enveloped by Aeternal Flames. They roared in anger as their flesh crackled and blackened, the fire clinging to them like living parasites that refused to die out.
But they could do nothing except roar in frustration as the familiar bombarded them relentlessly from above.
It was then it happened.
A deep distorted neigh that sounded more like the rumbling of an abyssal beast erupted from the depths of the battlefield before piercing into the skies.
The corrupted creatures who had piled together were suddenly blasted away by a massive shockwave, the air itself snuffing out the burning flames.
From the center of the eruption, a two-meter-high stallion covered in gorgeous earthen armor roared into the skies.
The armor looked ancient and regal, layered plates of dark bronze earth interlocking across its body like the scales of an ancient beast. Jagged ridges curved along its limbs and chest, while glowing crimson cracks pulsed beneath the armor like molten magma trapped underneath stone.
Its mane had transformed completely, no longer merely crimson, but streams of burning scarlet energy flowing wildly down its neck and back like a river of blood-red fire.
Blood seeped from the spaces between its armor, and yet it couldn't diminish the suffocating and grandiose aura surrounding the beast.
A thick overwhelming bronze aura erupted from the Ruinsteed King like a collapsing mountain unleashed upon the world.
The creature was already at the end of its rope. It could feel its life slipping away as the wisps of corruption tried to consume its remaining essence.
But it refused to succumb.
It refused to fall.
Digging into the deepest part of its essence, it tapped into the boundless power hidden within traces of its bloodline.
A shocking pressure erupted into the surroundings, concentric waves of air blasting outward around it as the image of a majestic destrier over ten meters long took shape behind it.
The image seemed to hear the call of the Ruinsteed king as it mirrored the king's defiant stance.
A deep neigh filled the region as the Ruinsteed King raised its front hooves into the skies proudly.
The sight of the over ten-meter-high destrier image doing the same sent the battle into a lull. Its massive frame seemed to block out the skies, casting a looming shadow over the earth.
Even Alice and Nathan, who had finally returned from the outskirts of the battlefield after carving through hordes of undead, froze at the sight before them, their blood running cold beneath the overwhelming pressure.
- ROAR!
The Elite Crawlers were the first to react. A guttural roar tore out from their disgusting lips as they turned turned and fled.
The corrupted creatures, receiving the orders, quickly turned and rushed back toward the main building.
By now, it was the only structure not compromised, as both the male and female dormitories had long been reduced to rubble.
However, the tide of corrupted creatures didn't get far, as the Ruinsteed King brought its front hooves smashing down, the massive image behind it doing the same.
- BOOOOOOM!
The sound was like a meteor colliding with the earth.
A massive wave of earth erupted outward, rubble and shattered corpses blasted into the skies as deep trenches ripped across the battlefield like scars carved by an angry god.
A massive plume of dust rose into the skies, obstructing the battlefield for several minutes.
Finally, the pale moonlight from the nearly full moon pierced through the settling dust, the aftermath of the attack laid bare before the world.
Corpses littered the battlefield, Ruinsteeds, wolves, centipedes, and undead.
More than half of the horde lay dead for good, a large portion of them reduced into puddles of black blood splattered across the shattered ground.
At the center of the wreckage, the Ruinsteed King lowered its body to the ground like a weary warhorse finally reaching the end of its journey, the rise and fall of its sides slowing with every passing breath.
It raised its head proudly as it surveyed the battlefield, the rough breaths coming from its snout releasing crimson smoke that pooled around it.
It had failed as a king.
Not only had it terribly lost to the human city last night, now it had lost its herd.
What was the purpose of a king without its followers?
Still, it made sure to take as many of its enemies to the grave with it.
It was just a pity it couldn't kill them all.
But it was still barely enough to sate its bloodlust.
- Huff!
- Huff!
The crimson smoke pooling around it slowly died down, as the glow in its eyes dimmed.
In its final moments, it caught sight of an injured Ruinsteed far in the distance, still within the academy grounds defending a group of humans.
As if sensing its king's gaze, the Ruinsteed released a low mournful neigh filled with sorrow and helplessness.
It seemed it wasn't even the last of its herd to leave.
What a wretched king it was.
Still, it could tell the Ruinsteed was also far past the point of surviving. It was only a matter of time before it too succumbed to its heavy injuries.
But it wouldn't be there to see it.
It indifferently watched what remained of the horde charge at it, the surviving Elite Crawlers roaring in fury as they rushed toward it.
With one final snort, it directly imploded its own heart, unwilling to be turned into one of those defiled creatures.
The Ruinsteed King died with its head raised proudly upon the battlefield.
A breath later, a system message flashed before the eyes of those still alive across the world.
