The Omega Who Rose from the Ashes: The Alpha's Regret

Chapter 52: A Path Forward

Sam

Sam reeled from what his Alpha had just shared with him. The words hung in the car’s air, heavy and dangerous, settling over them like a shroud. He needed a few minutes to process the information, to gather his scattered thoughts. The situation sounded like some old wives’ tale wrapped in the worst kind of bad luck - an Omega carrying the pup of an Alpha who wasn’t her mate, and the possibility that the true sire could sense it across any distance. Stories like this were the stuff of legends, the kind you whispered to scare new recruits during their first night watch.

Sam’s hands tightened on the steering wheel as he considered the implications. If even half of what Bradley’s aunt had said was true, they were facing a threat unlike any he’d encountered in his years of service.

"So what’s the next step, Alpha?" he finally asked, keeping his voice steady despite the turmoil churning in his mind.

Bradley rubbed his chin, the rasp of his stubble filling the silence between them. The sound seemed unnaturally loud in the confined space. "I want to tell the pack," he said after a long moment. "Everyone needs to be in the loop. I don’t know for sure if what my aunt said is true, that the father of the pup can sense it, but I’m not willing to take any chances. It’s better our warriors be prepared for the possibility of James showing his face here."

Sam nodded in agreement, relief washing through him at the decisiveness in Bradley’s tone. The plan sounded solid, and he knew with absolute certainty that being safe beat being sorry. Dead, after all, was a hell of a lot worse than sorry.

"What about personal protection for the Luna?" Sam shifted gears as they merged onto the highway. "Should we put Gamma Jack on notice?" Gammas usually handled the Luna’s security detail, but since Goldmoon hadn’t had one for years, Jack had been leading training missions overseas, sharing their pack’s combat techniques with allied territories.

Bradley hummed, a low, thoughtful sound that rumbled from deep in his chest. "Yeah, you should call him. Tell him to return immediately. That’s an order." He paused, his gaze growing distant as he stared out at the passing landscape. "I just need to find a way to make Trishelle the rightful Luna. To make her claim unbreakable."

The two men brainstormed as the car devoured the miles back to Goldmoon. Thankfully, Bradley had asked Lorenzo to email him all the details concerning Trishelle’s pregnancy, and they both pored over the files on a tablet, searching for a loophole, a way to ensure her safety that didn’t involve Bradley’s potentially lethal bite. Sam watched his Alpha from the corner of his eye, noting the tension in Bradley’s jaw, the way his fingers drummed an anxious rhythm against his thigh.

"What if she marked you?" Samuel asked, breaking the heavy silence that had settled between them. "Would that work?"

Bradley paused, his finger hovering over the screen. The question had clearly caught him off guard - it was something he had never considered. He pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over his aunt’s contact before he pressed the call button. Sam could hear his Alpha’s heartbeat accelerate as the phone rang once, twice. Cynthia answered on the third ring, her voice warm and slightly breathless, as if she’d hurried to reach the phone.

Without even a greeting, Bradley blurted out the question that had seized his thoughts. "Can she mark me instead?"

Cynthia looked at the phone for a moment, a flicker of amusement dancing in her eyes before she returned it to her ear. Her nephew’s urgency was palpable even through the connection. "I’m sorry, nephew," she said, her tone gently chiding, "I couldn’t hear you over the lack of a greeting."

Bradley sighed, running a hand over his face in frustration. Sam could see the exhaustion etched in the lines around his Alpha’s eyes. "I’m sorry, Auntie. My wolf has been restless about Trishelle. He’s been snarling in my head for days, insisting that something is wrong. I just want to ensure that she would be safe, that her position is secure, if that bastard James finds out that she’s pregnant." His voice cracked slightly on the last word, revealing the depth of his fear.

"Hmm..." Cynthia took off her reading glasses and laid her book on the bedside table, giving her nephew her full attention. She could hear the desperation threading through his words, the protective instinct that drove him. "Well, I’m not sure if she can mark you, seeing that she’s an Omega. Usually, the male’s mark triggers her body to respond, a hormonal cascade that makes marking her possible in return, but that won’t be an option in your case." She tapped a perfectly manicured finger on the table, her mind working through the problem. "What about doing the mating ceremony? None of the information we’ve found states that you can’t mate. It only discusses the dangers of the marking bite."

Bradley

Bradley sat up straight in his seat, a jolt of excitement shooting through him like electricity. He quickly ran through all the information he had absorbed, all the ancient lore and dire warnings, and realized she was absolutely right. He could mate with Trishelle. The ceremony, the bond, the public declaration - it was all possible, all within reach. This meant he could perform the ceremony in front of the pack, thus rightfully and publicly accepting Trishelle as his Luna. He just had to be careful that in his excitement to finally be one with her, he didn’t lose control and bite her. The thought sobered him slightly, but his wolf, who had been agitated for days, settled down with a low rumble of approval in his mind. The beast promised to keep his teeth to himself, understanding what was at stake.

"Auntie," Bradley said, his voice thick with emotion that threatened to overwhelm him, "did I ever tell you how much I love and admire you?"

Cynthia laughed, a warm, knowing sound that wrapped around him like a familiar embrace. He always said this whenever she gave him a brilliant answer to a troubling question, and it never failed to touch her heart.

"Sure thing, you little rascal," came her fond reply, exactly as it always did.

Bradley smiled, the first genuine smile he’d managed in days, his mind already racing ahead to the preparations. "I would like to hold the ceremony as soon as possible. We’ll be back in two days. Can you get some of the council members to attend? I’ll call ahead and let the others know so we can prepare everything. And don’t worry, I’m going to call Trishelle right now and let her know. I hope that everything can be arranged in less than two weeks."

Cynthia agreed readily, already mentally composing her guest list, and after a bit more small talk about logistics and family news, the call ended. She sat for a moment, a smile playing on her lips. Guess she had a ceremony to prepare for. The thought filled her with joy - her nephew deserved this happiness after so many years alone. Cynthia picked up her phone and dialed one of her favorite people. "Hey, Councilman Joe, what do you say to attending my nephew’s mating ceremony in about two weeks?"

Trishelle

Trishelle was elated when Bradley called her to share the plan to be mated. Her heart had soared at his words, at the warmth and certainty in his voice. She was deeply touched that he wanted to share their story, their complicated reality, with the entire pack. It was a risk, a profound show of faith in her and in their bond. She fell more in love with him than she ever thought possible in that moment, her chest aching with the intensity of her feelings.

The only shadow on her joy was the dreams she kept having at night. They were getting more vivid, more disturbingly real with each passing evening. Her research with Samuel and Alexa had yielded nothing useful, and even consulting with Lorenzo gave no clues as to why she was experiencing this psychic connection to James. The dreams left her shaken, her sheets damp with sweat, but she refused to let them taint her happiness. She didn’t allow the nightmares to keep her from enjoying the bustle of preparations for Bradley’s return.

Just thinking about seeing him made Trishelle’s heart pound, a frantic, excited rhythm against her ribs that left her breathless. A deep, liquid heat pooled low in her belly, and she could feel herself growing wet, her body already anticipating his touch, his presence. Her mind would drift to the last time they were intimate, the way his hands had felt on her skin, the possessive, hungry look in his eyes as he’d claimed her. It was all she could do to focus on anything else, to keep her thoughts from constantly wandering to him. She had been spending considerably more time with the pups in the pack’s daycare, knowing she needed to ground herself, to focus on the here and now rather than her fevered anticipation.

Today was the day that Bradley would finally arrive. Trishelle was woken at six-thirty in the morning by Tiffany and a few of the other omegas, their faces bright with excitement, their energy infectious. She was urged to shower and then have breakfast, which was brought to her room on a tray laden with her favorites, each dish prepared with obvious care. While she munched on warm blueberry muffins, crispy bacon, and a fresh fruit salad drizzled with honey, Tiffany left only to return moments later with a long, elegant garment bag draped over her shoulder.

"Luna," Tiffany said, her voice practically vibrating with barely contained glee, "the Alpha had this specially ordered for you and asks if you will welcome him wearing this."

She unzipped the bag with a flourish to reveal a beautiful knee-length dress in a soft, luminous peach color that seemed to glow in the morning light. Taking it out carefully, Trishelle could see that it was a high-waisted dress with a square neckline that would flatter her growing curves perfectly. The skirt was flowy and romantic, made of a light, airy material that moved like water, and it appeared to be something she could wear comfortably well into her pregnancy. Bradley had thought of everything. With tears of happiness welling in her eyes and threatening to spill over, Trishelle nodded, too overcome to speak.

Seeing this emotional response, Tiffany clapped her hands together with delight. "Alright, ladies, after our Luna has finished her breakfast, let’s get her all dolled up for Alpha Bradley."

The other omegas began chatting and giggling excitedly, so genuinely glad to have a Luna to fuss over after years without one. Their joy was palpable, filling the room with warmth. Tiffany leaned over and whispered in Trishelle’s ear, her voice conspiratorial and playful. "Trust me, Luna, by the time we’re finished, the Alpha won’t be able to keep his paws off of you."

Trishelle blushed, a deep crimson creeping up her neck and flooding her cheeks, and nodded shyly. Letting herself relax into their ministrations, she felt one of the omegas begin to work on her hair with gentle, practiced hands while two others began on her nails, both hands and feet, discussing color options in hushed, excited tones. It was the first time she had experienced this kind of pampering, this sisterly attention, and Trishelle planned to savor every moment of it.

They finished in under three hours, working with efficient precision and obvious love. When she finally saw herself in the full-length mirror, Trishelle couldn’t believe her eyes. The woman staring back at her looked transformed. Her hair was styled in soft, romantic waves that cascaded over her shoulders like silk, and her makeup was subtle yet striking, highlighting her best features - the curve of her cheekbones, the fullness of her lips, the brightness of her eyes. The dress clung to her curves perfectly, accentuating her feminine shape while accommodating her small baby bump. She looked like a fairy princess stepped out of a storybook, ethereal and radiant, and she knew with absolute certainty that Bradley would be pleased.

Soon, a shout rose from downstairs, the sound carrying through the house like wildfire - the Alpha had returned. The girls quickly grabbed her hands, their excitement bubbling over, and pulled her from the room with encouraging smiles. Trishelle made her way to the front of the main house, her heart hammering against her ribs so hard she thought it might burst free. She stood waiting with bated breath, her hands trembling slightly at her sides, for her handsome prince to arrive and sweep her into his arms.
