5 Centimeters from Nostalgia and the Guardian Who Won’t Let Go of Your Hand
The inside of Dream World park felt like an actual dream.
Multiple rides, various food stalls, and lots of people. Everything a child—or an adult—needed to feel better.
As soon as they entered, they headed for a food stall. Shiori, the least physically strong, somehow dragged them all to a takoyaki stand.
Shiori devoured her takoyaki with a speed that would frighten anyone who dared to look. Mochi, for her part, tried to clean a small sauce stain on Sora's cheek, acting like the perfect wife in front of others.
As soon as Shiori finished eating, Mochi spotted a stall in the distance selling couple accessories, so she grabbed both of them and dragged them toward that place.
Then they got on the famous ride called Alice's Tea Party, also known as the spinning teacups.
There, the two girls had so much fun they didn’t even notice Sora nearly throwing up mid-ride. They kept going for hours after that.
However, everything changed when Mochi spotted a video game arcade. So without wasting time, both Shiori and Mochi dragged Sora to that place.
Inside that arcade, what caught the group's attention most was a dance machine.
The dance machine glowed brightly. Shiori adjusted her red glasses, and for a moment, Sora swore he saw lines of code reflected in them.
“Tank, my sensors detect a song on legendary difficulty,” Shiori said, stepping onto the platform with confidence. “Time to prove my reflexes aren’t just for games.”
Mochi jumped beside her, full of excitement. “I’ll keep up with you, Shiori! I’m sure we can break the record!” she exclaimed as the countdown hit zero. But what they really wanted was to win the grand prize and give it to Sora as thanks for bringing them.
Sora stood to the side, enjoying the scene as the girls began to move. Before long, a crowd started to gather to watch.
While Shiori and Mochi drew all the attention, Sora felt it was time to act. Something in the back of his mind kept warning him—the same person from the entrance was nearby.
"Girls, I'm going for some recovery potions... I mean, for some water!" Sora shouted over the noise of the music and spectators.
Shiori just nodded without missing a beat, and Mochi blew him a flying kiss before returning to the action.
Sora slipped away from the crowd and, instead of heading to the shop, ducked into an alley between two plush stalls. He moved quietly until he was sure he’d shaken off the figure following him.
That person who had been following him was surprised to have lost sight of their target so quickly.
But they wouldn’t give up that easily. As they exited the alley, they spotted Sora in the distance, heading quickly toward a ride.
Airi wasn’t about to give up. She quickened her pace, clutching her folder to her chest. “Yamamoto, don’t think you’ll get away that easily!” she thought, pushing through the crowd—only to realize the park had gotten much more crowded than she expected.
Without warning, a tide of tourists excited for the upcoming parade surged from one side. The impact was like receiving an area-of-effect attack.
"Ah! My hat!" Airi shouted when the wind and a shove snatched away her disguise.
Her folder slipped from her grasp and vanished beneath the crowd. Disoriented, Airi was swept along with the mass of people heading straight for the Steel Dragon—the fastest roller coaster in the park.
Before Airi could process what was happening, an employee gently pushed her toward the last available seat so as not to delay the line.
“W-wait! I haven’t even paid for this!” Airi shouted, but her voice was drowned out by the screams.
She turned her head to the left, and her heart nearly stopped. There, sitting as calm as ever, was Sora.
“Well, well… looks like the class rep finally decided to join the game,” Sora said, flashing her a calm smile.
“Y-Y-Y-Yamamoto! It’s not what you think! I was just—!” Her cheeks turned bright red.
"CLAK!"
The safety bar locked, trapping them both. The ride began to climb, and the disaster began.
As they climbed higher, Airi’s panic grew. Her hands trembled as she started to panic.
"What's wrong, Airi? Are you feeling okay?" Sora asked, noticing the evident worry she was showing.
Airi didn't respond for several seconds.
"I want to get off," she said quietly as the car neared its peak.
"Did you say something, Airi?" Sora responded, not understanding what was happening.
“I want off, Yamamoto! Get me out of here right now!” Airi shouted, panicked. “That’s an order! As president, I order you to stop this… this torture!”
"I-I don't think this has a pause button like a video game," Sora responded, watching as the park became a tiny model beneath their feet.
Sora noticed Airi had squeezed her eyes shut. Her hands were now desperately searching for something to hold onto.
"I-I don't think following you was a good idea," she whispered, and for the first time, she didn't use his surname. Her tone was small, vulnerable. She was no longer the respectable Kuroki, but the vulnerable girl Airi.
Sora softened his gaze. After all, Airi was still the girl who needed a Guardian to get her down from places where her curiosity led her.
Without thinking too much, Sora extended his hand toward hers to hold it. "Don't open your eyes if you don't want to," Sora mentioned without letting go of her hand. "Don't worry, I'll take care of you like in the old days, okay?"
Airi's words couldn't escape her chest, so she squeezed Sora's hand tightly.
At that moment, the roller coaster reached its highest point. The world seemed to stop for an instant.
The drop was a rush of emotions. Airi’s scream was lost to the wind, but she never let go of Sora’s hand. For those few seconds, the class rep was just a girl trusting her friend to protect her.
Ten minutes later, Sora walked through the area with an Airi who seemed to have weakness in her legs. She was pale, disheveled, and walked leaning on Sora's shoulder, completely forgetting she was supposed to be supervising.
"M-My dignity..." Airi murmured, still processing so many emotions.
"There, there... we'll look for your things later. How about we go to that stand over there for something to drink? Maybe some water would do you good," Sora said, pointing to a beverage stand.
“Only if you take me there,” Airi said, trying to regain her composure, though it was clear she hadn’t fully recovered.
Sora nodded with a smile, and little by little they both headed toward that stand, looking almost like a couple in love in anyone else's eyes.
