MHA: Dark Matter

Chapter 44 44: Smiling People

I smiled as I looked at the corpse of the broker who had taken on too much. He had forgotten professional ethics regarding client confidentiality. And it didn't matter what had caused such forgetfulness, the rustle of banknotes or the cold of a blade against his throat. No reason was justifiable in my eyes when it threatened the secrecy of my identity.

Wiping my knife on the dead man's clothes, I searched his apartment for money and other valuables. A professional habit, so to speak, although I knew that the really large sums were kept in bank accounts. Access to which I had obtained. Half an hour of "conversation," and my "interlocutor" agreed to everything.

I had also tested the effects of "Hardening" on living people. I was curious, and he was in pain. I had to stop quickly, though, as the client was on his way to meet Kami before our "conversation" ended. Hardening a living person, in terms of results, was not much different from the usual absorption, except that it was slower.

It was a shame, of course, that the broker had abandoned his professional ethics. He had been convenient for obtaining materials for my bombs and costume. But he had managed to please me. He had found one of the people who had been inquiring about Ticci Micc's identity. And it turned out to be a mercenary from the Tosaka conglomerate.

A known enemy is always better than an unknown one.

Humming softly to myself, I copied the information from his computer and left signs of a standard robbery for enrichment. The police would believe it. I didn't care about anyone else.

When I was finished, I used "Choice." The world changed to the familiar picture of various shades of darkness, on which the bright silhouettes of people stood out vividly. "Rejection" into the floor. My weightless body was already in the sky. I became visible, since it was night, for better orientation, and headed toward one of my safe houses to clean up and change into civilian clothes. I needed to do all this quickly and be home before Mei woke up.

My smile widened. And it hadn't left my face for three days now.

The memory of the pink haired girl's body in my arms sent a pleasant wave of goosebumps down my skin. Even when I was extracting information from that broker about my possible enemies, I was more concerned with how I was going to tell Mei about my trip to I Island. In the end, I had many enemies, but my girl was one of a kind.

I need to calm down. Think about the face of the pharmacy clerk when I had to rush to buy contraceptives. Oh, Kami, I had only been so embarrassed when I met the Yoshioka family.

My thoughts and pleasant memories were interrupted by a familiar sight in one of the alleys I was flying over. Landing on the edge of a roof, I wondered if I should get involved in what was happening.

A typical "villainy" scenario was unfolding. Rape. A large, muscular man with a lecherous face was pressing a frightened, pretty woman in office clothes against a wall. They couldn't see me. Few people look at rooftops, and these two certainly weren't admiring the city architecture.

A knife twirled between my fingers. I calculated how to stab the man and retrieve the knife without getting too messy.

Why get involved at all? Why not just walk by or just knock him out?

Unlike heroes with their "save and protect" ideology and their "work" duties, I had two reasons for interfering. First, because I wanted to. Second, I don't like rapists.

Of course, this didn't mean that Ticci Micc, like some vigilante, specifically searched for rapists to subsequently kill them in the name of justice. But after the nightclub "Devil's Pleasure"… I found it much more pleasant to see any rapist I encountered dead.

So, overcoming my desire to get home as quickly as possible and my simple laziness, I decided to put this man into a state that satisfied my moral preferences.

But reality decided to show me that the cliché of a "villain harassing a weak woman" did not apply to this pair at all.

A short scream, and a small fountain of blood shot from the man's neck. The would be rapist, pale and clutching the wound on his neck, stared at his "victim" with disbelief and growing fear.

The "victim" licked the blood off a butterfly knife with a cheerful smile. Then she pushed the man. Weak from blood loss, he couldn't stay upright and fell. The woman's figure began to melt like candle wax, losing its color. A few seconds later, a miniature, naked girl with a cheerful smile stood over the failed rapist. And a knife in her hand.

My mind went blank at the sight.

"Rapist san, I'm so glad you decided to satisfy my thirst tonight. I've only tasted B negative blood once before. You are so generous, Rapist san."

Rapist san was not happy. Especially when the cute, smiling blonde girl with the tinkling voice cut the tendons in his hands with practiced precision and pressed her lips to his wound.

I felt awkward. Questions swirled in my head.

What the hell? How? Why?

What was I even doing here?

The sight of her beautiful, naked body covered in blood was distracting, but the last question "rebooted" my brain.

Indeed, what was I doing here? The failed rapist would soon be dead, which fully satisfied my moral preferences. Should I introduce myself to the girl?

Looking at this beauty sucking blood (literally) from a man, I felt like postponing our acquaintance to more desperate times. So desperate that for some reason I would need to meet a completely insane vampire nudist maniac.

So, I'd better leave.

A short knife was easily caught by a hand near my mask. Tch, I'd been spotted anyway. Of course, I could have ignored the knife, letting it pass through my body, but why give this maniac more information about my Quirk?

And since I'd been spotted, I needed to respond.

"Oh dear. I feel so awkward that you had to tear yourself away from such an engaging task for my sake. Such passion. Such intensity. Oh, I'm so embarrassed to interrupt such a hot embrace."

Clutching my shoulders in an artistic display of embarrassment, I said all this in an excited tone that made even this maniac choke on air.

"Therefore, I won't distract you further, Bloodsucker san. And I'll return your property."

"Rejection."

The maniac, who had been about to say something, probably sarcastic, abruptly stopped because of the crash behind her and the scratch that appeared on her cheek. The knife, accelerated by my Quirk, was becoming an increasingly unpleasant skill for my enemies.

While my conversation partner was distracted, I continued on my way. I needed to double check everything so there would be no surprises while I was away from Japan.

[Himiko Toga's Pov]

Back in the dark alley, two remained. The victim and the predator.

Touching her cheek, the blonde girl looked with surprise at the crimson liquid on her finger. She licked it. And smiled.

"Interesting. I can't wait for our next meeting, Mask kun. Ah, how delicious your blood must be, hmm. Especially when my little knife punishes him for such a ridiculous nickname."

The girl looked at where the stranger's knife had hit and what was left of the low quality blade. She began to gather her things. Five minutes later, a beautiful blonde in a school uniform with a dreamy smile on her face walked out of the alley.
