Marked by the Four Beast Lords After Transmigration

Chapter 74: Hearthfire

Chapter 74 — Hearthfire

Kael carried her through the rear doorway without breaking the kiss, and Nia was only peripherally aware of the room receiving them — the dim storm-muted light filtering through the upper vent slit, the hearthwarmth that had been building in the stone through the earlier heat cycles and now pressed outward from the walls like something patient that had been waiting for them to return to it. The layered furs across the sleeping platform and the thicker blankets folded near the vent wall. The particular quality of enclosed warmth that belonged to this room and had been belonging to it, she realized distantly, for weeks now in ways she had stopped being able to separate from her sense of safety.

He lowered her onto the bedding with a slowness that had nothing to do with uncertainty. She felt the distinction clearly — the deliberate quality of the care, the way it came from restraint rather than hesitation, from someone holding himself to a pace his body was already arguing against. When his hands slid from beneath her and settled along her waist instead, his thumbs moving in slow arcs against her sides, she felt the effort in the touch. The steadiness he was imposing on himself through the contact, grounding the wanting in something measured.

He looked down at her without speaking. The storm moved through the mountain behind the walls, a low and continuous presence, and the hearthlight moved softly against the stone, and Nia's pulse ran faster under the weight of his attention than it had under any of the kisses.

Then he leaned down and kissed her again, and the kiss was slower than the ones in the outer room, deeper in the way that slow things become deep — not through force but through accumulation, through the unhurried layering of warmth against warmth until the total of it became something she felt in her hands and her throat and the soles of her feet. His hand moved into her curls, fingers spreading carefully through the loosened texture at the back of her head, and the other settled more firmly at her waist, and she understood from the way he kissed her that he already knew exactly how long he had been wanting this. She could feel the knowledge of it in the deliberate drag of his mouth against hers, in every restrained breath, in the small adjustments he kept making that drew her incrementally closer beneath him.

Her fingers tightened in the front of his shirt. He made a low sound against her mouth — felt more than heard, a vibration that moved through the contact between them and settled low in her stomach with a heat that spread outward immediately.

His mouth left hers. Only long enough to move along her jaw, unhurried, and then lower, to the side of her throat, where he kissed slowly and with attention, as though her skin there was something worth taking time with. Nia's breath caught on the first kiss and didn't entirely recover before the second. His hand tightened at her waist. She could feel his restraint thinning in the quality of each touch — not breaking, not yet, but present in the way the surface of water is present before something moves through it.

Then the careful, deliberate graze of his teeth against the side of her throat, light enough to be a question and certain enough to be a statement, and she shivered hard beneath him from the base of her spine outward.

Kael exhaled slowly against her skin. He paused there, his forehead lowering briefly to rest against her throat, his breathing audible now in the quiet of the storm-sealed room. One of his hands moved beneath the loosened fabric at her waist, spreading carefully across the warmth of her stomach, fingers tracing the shape of her there as though committing it to memory through touch alone. The contact pulled a soft arch from her before she had decided to move, her body answering him without consulting the part of her that still maintained any pretense of composure.

She felt him react to that. Felt the slight tightening of his hands, the shift in his breathing against her throat, the momentary stillness of someone standing at the edge of something and choosing, very deliberately, how to proceed.

Kael’s hands found the ties at her waist slowly afterward, his attention still fixed on her face while he loosened them.

The fabric shifted beneath his hands a little at a time.

Each new stretch of exposed skin seemed to affect him visibly.

His mouth kept returning to her between movements — her jaw, her throat, the curve beneath her ear — like he could not stand to stop touching her long enough to finish undressing her properly.

Nia’s pulse climbed harder every time his gaze lowered afterward.

Warmth spread steadily beneath her skin while the loosened fabric slipped farther aside beneath his hands.

Kael pushed the loosened fabric slowly from her shoulders afterward.

The movement exposed her skin to the warmer air in gradual pieces, and every time another stretch of her became visible beneath the hearthlight, his hands paused briefly against her like he was forcing himself not to rush.

His mouth kept finding the newly exposed skin almost immediately.

Her shoulder.

The upper curve of her chest.

Slow kisses that lingered long enough to pull another wave of heat through her before he moved lower again.

Nia’s breathing had become completely uneven by the time the heavier fabric finally slipped fully away beneath his hands.

Kael looked down at her afterward.

The expression on his face made warmth climb instantly into every part of her body he was looking at.

His hand slid slowly along her side.

Then he leaned down and kissed her again before she could hide her face anywhere.

Kael pushed himself upright above her just long enough to pull the heavier outer layers from his shoulders and free the remaining fabric, and Nia watched him do it. The hearthlight moved across broad shoulders and the warm brown of his skin marked with the darker striping that had fascinated her for longer than she'd been comfortable admitting — muscle shifting as he pulled the fabric free, heavy curls falling loose around his face with the movement. He looked, in the dim storm-light above her, like something the mountain had made specifically to inhabit it, solid and unhurried and entirely at ease with himself in a way that landed in her chest as much as her eyes.

He looked back down at her and found her watching, and the heat that climbed into her face was immediate and complete. His gaze moved slowly across her in a way that felt like being understood rather than examined, and the quality of attention in it — that steady, encompassing focus that had been dismantling her composure for weeks — was, if anything, more direct now than it had ever been in the outer rooms of the residence.

His hand slid upward along her calf. Then higher, slow enough that she felt each inch of the movement, the warmth of his palm against her skin, the fabric of her dress pushed gradually upward along her thighs. Her ears, which had been the source of more embarrassment in this residence than anything else she could name, twitched sharply and entirely beyond her control.

Kael's eyes moved to them immediately. Something shifted in his expression — the last remnant of the careful patience he'd been maintaining giving way to something quieter and more complete, a wanting that had moved past the stage of being managed.

His thumb brushed slowly along the inside of her thigh, and the sensation traveled upward through her entire body before she'd finished feeling the beginning of it. Her ears twitched again. His hand tightened once against her leg, the grip firm and warm.

He leaned back down, and this time the kiss was different from the ones before — hungrier, the restraint still present but thinner now, his mouth moving against hers with an urgency that was the truer shape of what had been underneath the patience all along. His body settled more fully against hers and the weight of him pressed her deeper into the bedding, solid and warm, and his hand moved into her curls and tilted her head back slightly and she felt, with great clarity, that she was not going to survive this in any meaningful sense of the word.

He kissed her jaw, then the corner of her mouth, her throat again, and lower this time — the center of her collarbone and the upper curve of her chest as the loosened fabric slipped further under the movement of his hands. His mouth against her skin was warm and thorough and patient in a way that had stopped feeling like restraint and started feeling like intention, like he was taking his time because he wanted to and not because he was holding anything back. Each kiss carried the slight pressure of his teeth at the end of it, light and precise, and the heat that gathered in her stomach with each one coiled tighter rather than releasing.

Her ears twitched helplessly with each one. He noticed every single time, his gaze lifting briefly toward them before returning to whatever part of her currently held his attention, and the look in his eyes afterward was something she would have needed to look away from if his hands hadn't been keeping her exactly where he wanted her.

She reached for him. Her hands found the warmth of his chest, spread across the muscle there, and felt it tighten immediately beneath her palms. He closed his eyes for a single breath, his jaw setting slightly with the effort of holding his own pace, and the small evidence of how much this cost him moved through her chest with a warmth entirely distinct from the physical heat they'd been building.

She kissed the side of his jaw. His throat, where his pulse beat fast and visible. His mouth made a low rough sound against her hair and his arms tightened around her and gathered her closer beneath him, the movement pressing them together with a solidity that pulled a sharp breath from her before she'd prepared for it.

Then his mouth found the curve where her neck met her shoulder, and he kissed there slowly.

As he entered her, she felt his teeth settle against the skin — light at first, exploratory, learning the particular geography of the place — and then the careful, deliberate bite, not enough to hurt but enough to send a wave of heat crashing through her entire body from that single point outward, reaching her hands and the backs of her knees and places she hadn't known were waiting for it.

She couldn’t help but gasp.

She gasped against his shoulder. Her fingers tightened in his curls hard enough that he made a sound that was not entirely controlled.

He kissed slowly across the mark afterward, his mouth warm against the heated skin, his breathing rough now against her throat. His hand spread across her waist and then lower, moving with the same slow deliberateness he'd brought to everything — a careful, thorough attention that left her with nowhere to retreat from the sensation, no moment to recover between one touch and the next. Her breath broke while her ears twitched again with a helplessness she had stopped trying to disguise.

“You’re beautiful,” he said quietly against her skin.

The words settled low through her chest because of how plainly he said them, warm and steady against her throat while his hands remained spread carefully along her waist.

Heat moved through her so quickly afterward that she pulled him closer before she could think too hard about the feeling.

He kissed her again before she could speak, slower for a moment, and she understood that he had felt the shift in her and was giving her something gentler while she steadied herself. His hand moved along her thigh with patience, watching her face, reading whatever he found there with the same attention he gave the mountain's sounds and the storm's direction.

The slow movement between them gradually deepened afterward.

Kael’s restraint thinned another step at a time while his body settled more heavily against hers, the warmth and pressure of him surrounding her completely until she felt full of him everywhere they touched.

She pulled him closer rather than answering with words. He came willingly, his body settling between hers, and when he finally pushed slowly into her the fullness of it stole her breath so completely that she gripped his shoulders and held on against the wave of it, warmth, weight, and the overwhelming reality of him and what she had agreed to.

He went still immediately, his entire body taut with the effort of it, his forehead dropping against hers while he breathed deliberately through his nose. She could feel the restraint in him like something physical — a thing with mass and effort, held in place by the focused attention he was giving to her face, reading it carefully for whatever she needed him to know.

She kissed him softly. "I'm here," she said against his mouth, and felt him absorb those two words the way the mountain absorbed heat — completely, and down into the deepest stone.

Something in his expression released. Not all at once, not carelessly, but in the way of something that has been held a long time finally being permitted to set itself down. He kissed her deeply, his mouth open against hers, and moved again — slow and measured, feeling every reaction she gave him, his hands never still against her skin. Her waist, her thigh, her curls. He seemed determined to be in contact with as much of her as possible, as though touch were the language he thought in and her body had become the thing he most needed to understand.

The heat built between them in layers, each one deeper than the last, and she felt it in her throat and her hands and the arch of her back each time he moved. Her ears kept twitching helplessly despite every attempt to regain composure, and each time they did his eyes went to them with an expression that was dark and warm and entirely without restraint, and the sound he made low in his throat the third time sent heat flooding through her so fast it nearly undid her completely.

He pressed his mouth to the mark at her shoulder again, open and warm, his teeth grazing the heated skin there, and she felt the echo of the bite move through her all over again layered beneath the current sensation, and the combination of them — the memory and the present, his mouth on the mark he'd made, the weight and warmth and steady movement of him — built into something that gathered itself tight in her center and broke outward through her entire body in a long warm wave that took her breath and her voice and her last coherent thought with it.

She held him through it, her face against his throat, feeling his pulse fast beneath her mouth, feeling the roughness of his breathing against her hair. He pressed deeper at the sound she made, a groan low against her skin, his hands gripping her with a tenderness that never disappeared despite the hunger in him. He moved harder then — not roughly, but fully and without the careful restraint he had been holding earlier — and she felt the difference immediately, the way the careful restraint gave way to something more honest, more present, more purely him.

His face was against her neck when it reached him. She felt him gather and tighten and hold her closer in the final moment, his arms an enclosure around her that felt less like possession and more like shelter, and the sound that left him was low and not entirely formed, pressed into the skin at her throat like something he had needed to say and could only say this way.

Afterward, the storm moved through the mountain with its low and patient continuance, and the hearthlight held against the walls, and the room stayed warm around them in the dense and settled way of spaces that have been made into shelter by the people inside them.

Nia lay against his chest and listened to his heartbeat slow.

His hand moved through her curls in long, unhurried strokes, the same deliberate steadiness he brought to everything, present even now in the simple motion of his palm against her hair.

The mountain held them both inside its warmth and did not ask anything of either of them.

Outside, the storm continued its long and patient work against the stone.

Neither of them slept for a long time afterward.

Their night inside the mountain had only just begun.
