WAVE 1 OF ??? DETECTED.
I looked up at a horizon full of striped canvas and painted grins, all of them turning toward me at once, and understood with a clarity that should have terrified me and somehow only made me laugh harder that killing it hadn't been the end of anything.
It had only been the opening act.
They came pouring out of every tent, every collapsed booth, every hollow-eyed carousel horse still bolted to a frame that shouldn't have been standing smaller than the boss, faster, wearing the same painted grins stretched too wide across faces that never quite matched the movement underneath them. A whole audience answering a curtain call nobody had asked for.
I didn't have time to be afraid of the number. I had a hammer dragging at the end of one arm, blood cooling down my back, and something rising behind my ribs that didn't feel like fear at all.
The first one lunged. I met it laughing, swinging the hammer in a wide, careless arc that connected clean and sent it sprawling into three others behind it like a bowling frame nobody had asked for either.
More things appeared in my hands as I needed them. I didn't summon them so much as find them there, the way you find your keys already in your palm without remembering picking them up. A deck of cards that cut like glass when I flung them, fanning out mid-air to catch three targets at once. Bowling pins that detonated on impact, throwing sparks and smoke across the ruined midway. The bat swapping back in when the crowd thinned enough for precision instead of spread, heavier and meaner than the hammer, better suited for the ones smart enough to hang back.
I don't know how long it went on. Long enough that my arms should have given out twice over. Long enough that the laughing in my chest stopped feeling forced and started feeling like the only honest thing I had left an engine running hot and clean underneath everything else. The betrayal. The grief. Two years of pending and unresolved and no further action required. All of it burning down into something that finally, finally had somewhere to go.
A clown-thing got past my guard once, claws catching my forearm in a line that should have hurt more than it did pain arriving distant now, muffled, like it belonged to someone standing a few feet away from me instead of inside my own skin. I turned the momentum of the hit into a spin, cards fanning out from my free hand mid-rotation, and three more of them dropped before I'd even finished facing forward again.
Somewhere in the smoke and the wreckage, I laughed hard enough that it turned into something closer to a scream, and I couldn't have told you, in that moment, which one it actually was.

I felt it before I understood it laughter bubbling up out of me again, uncontrolled this time, no longer a choice, my whole body shaking with it as the notifications kept firing, over and over, the same absurd cycle stacking on top of itself faster than I could read it.
QUEST COMPLETE: LAUGH. +5 to all stats. QUEST ISSUED: LAUGH. QUEST COMPLETE: LAUGH. +5 to all stats. I don't know how many times it happened. I lost count somewhere past thirty, doubled over on cracked pavement surrounded by the wreckage of an audience that would never applaud again, laughing so hard my ribs ached, tears streaming down a face that didn't feel entirely like mine anymore, until finally, mercifully, the notifications stopped.
The midway went quiet. Actually quiet the tinny carnival music finally cutting out, the canvas walls settling like something exhaling after holding its breath too long.
And past the wreckage, where the sealed gate had been, a violet shimmer opened clean and steady, patient, like it had been waiting the whole time for me to earn it.
I found a blowpop in my pocket. I don't know when I put it there some instinct, some new hunger the transformation had left behind along with everything else and I unwrapped it with hands that still had somebody else's tattoos climbing up the forearms, and put it in my mouth, and walked toward the gate like I hadn't just spent however long fighting for my life in a dead carnival.
I stepped through.
The extraction team was waiting on the other side guild liaisons, medics, a small cluster of onlookers who'd gathered once word got out that the floor had locked. Every single one of them went dead silent the second I cleared the threshold.
I looked down at myself. Twin ponytails, unfamiliar weight and color where my hair used to be. Tattoos I hadn't chosen, spiraling down arms that felt both entirely mine and entirely new. A hammer strapped across my back, heavier than anything I'd ever carried, somehow weightless anyway.
"What?" I said, around the blowpop, when nobody moved and nobody spoke and every phone in the crowd was already raised and pointed at me like I was the exhibit instead of the survivor.
Nobody answered. I didn't wait for them to.
I checked my interface instead, spatial storage, full, an inventory list scrolling past faster than I could fully process, loot from a fight I barely remembered clearly, class confirmed, name confirmed, stats climbing steadily under a header that hadn't existed in me twenty minutes ago.

VALENTINA CROSS THE LAUGHING QUEEN
I walked past the crowd, past the cameras, past a medic reaching for my arm who thought better of it the second I looked at him. I didn't look for Grayson. I already knew he wasn't there.
I just kept walking, blowpop clicking gently against my teeth, laughing quietly to myself at nothing and everything, the last normal version of me left somewhere behind on that carnival floor, buried under wreckage that would never make the sponsor reel it was supposed to.
