The Laughing Queen: [LitRPG, Sapphic, Evolution]

Chapter Four: No Hurt Feelings

The other side of the gate looked exactly like the file said it would, for about ninety seconds.

Faded circus tents stretched out under a sky the color of old bruises, canvas walls rippling with no wind to move them. Striped poles, rusted game booths, a carousel standing frozen mid-spin with horses whose painted eyes had long since chipped away to bare wood. Low-threat, the file said. Ambient hostile spawns only, mostly cosmetic, good visibility for sponsor content.

I had my recorder up, narrating soft background notes for the eventual edit the atmospheric decay here is genuinely striking, we're seeing signs of environmental degradation consistent with a floor that's been open roughly six months when Priya's tracker chimed wrong.

Not the clean double-beep that meant a scripted encounter. A long, dragging tone, low and rising, the kind of sound a system makes when it's recalculating something it didn't expect to have to recalculate.

"That's not right," Priya said, staring at her wrist. "That's not, that reading's not right, that's not a Tier 2 floor reading "

"Probably a glitch," Marcus said, already moving anyway, shield coming off his back on pure instinct.

The carousel screamed.

Not creaked. Screamed metal shearing against metal as the whole rusted structure lurched upright on legs it shouldn't have had, wooden horses peeling away from their poles like scabs, and underneath all of it, rising out of the frame the way a puppet rises out of a box, came something wearing the shape of a person the way a costume wears a person too tall, joints bending at angles that made my stomach turn just watching them, a painted grin stretched wide and static across a face that never quite matched the movement of the head beneath it.

My interface flared red across my vision.

??? THREAT LEVEL: UNKNOWN. FLOOR RECALIBRATION IN PROGRESS. "Fall back!" Grayson's voice cracked on the second word. "Fall back to the gate, now "

We didn't make it three steps before the world behind us sealed shut. No gate, no violet shimmer, just canvas and striped poles and old carnival music starting up from somewhere with no visible source, tinny and warped, a lullaby played through a broken speaker.

ACTIVE THREAT DETECTED. FLOOR LOCKED UNTIL RESOLUTION. That was when I understood, with the kind of clarity that only shows up right before something terrible, that ninety minutes round trip had just become an entirely different kind of math.

I wish I could say I remember it cleanly. I don't. I remember pieces.

I remember the ranger the young one, barely a year past his own Assignment Day going down first, one clean strike from something that moved faster than the eye wanted to track, his tracker chiming a flat, final tone that none of us had time to process before the fight kept moving.

I remember Priya screaming a heal that didn't land in time, screaming a second one that did, and then not having a third left in her when Marcus took a hit meant for all of us and folded sideways, shield arm bent at an angle shields aren't supposed to bend.

I remember the recorder still looped around my wrist through all of it, because some part of me trained, stubborn, useless in that moment kept thinking document, don't engage, you're unranked, you have no class, you are not equipped for this even as I dragged Priya backward by the collar of her robe, away from a swing that would've taken her head off clean.

Two down. Then it was Grayson, me, and Priya, backed against a game booth with a painted clown face grinning down from the awning, its eyes tracking us in a way painted eyes should never do.

"We have to split its attention," Grayson said, breathing hard, blade shaking in a grip that had looked so steady two years ago across a bowl of cooling noodles. "I'll draw it, you two get clear, find another exit, there has to be "

He didn't draw it.

He ran.

Not toward it. Away past me, past Priya, boots slapping against cracked pavement painted to look like a midway, and for one absurd, suspended second I thought maybe this was the plan, maybe he was flanking, maybe there was a version of this where he came back around behind it with a killing blow.

He didn't come back around.

Priya went down next a swipe I couldn't get to in time, no matter how fast I moved, no matter how many years of track and kendo and watching how people fought had trained my body to react. I felt something snap in my own shoulder just trying, and the pain was so total, so complete, that for a second the whole world narrowed down to white noise and the taste of copper.

I hit the ground.

The thing above me tilted its head, joints clicking in that wrong, deliberate way, painted grin somehow widening even though the paint never moved. Its voice, when it came, was cheerful. Almost gentle. Like a ringmaster addressing an audience of one.

"Oh, dddddon't take it pppppersonally, dear. No hurt feelings. This is ju juss jusst what the commander asked for."

I didn't understand the words. Not yet. I was too busy trying to drag myself backward on a shoulder that wouldn't hold weight, watching Grayson's back disappear between two collapsed tents, hand still half-raised from where I'd reached for him, some stupid, animal part of me still expecting him to turn around.

He didn't turn around.

The painted thing raised what might have once been a hand, fingers too long, nails like carnival nails on a poster gone wrong, and I understood in the half-second before it came down that I was completely, entirely alone, in a dungeon that had locked itself shut, with a boss the file swore didn't exist, and the only person who might have helped me had already decided, for the second time in two years, that I wasn't worth the risk.

Not personal, it had said.

Somehow, that was worse than if it had been.

The blow landed. The world went white, then red, then a kind of silence that didn't belong to any language I knew.

And somewhere underneath all of it, impossibly, something in me started to.

Laugh...
