Chapter 32. The Thing That Watches Back
On the second day toward Ashmoot, we hit a ward mid-breach, and the deep-wilds things came up organized.
That was the change, and it turned my stomach worse than any amount of teeth. The swarm at the Sunk Hollow had been a flood — mindless, pouring, hungry. This was different. When we crested the rise to the failing ward, the deep-wilds creatures were already up through the crack, and they weren't feeding, weren't scattering. They were arranged. A screen of the small ones forward. The big ones held back. And when Bruno charged the causeway, they adjusted — flowed to meet him, tried to flank, pulled him off the chokepoint with a feint.
"They're being herded," Lila breathed, ice crackling off her fingers. "Something's — someone's moving them—"
"Ward first, theory later!" Vera snapped. "Adrian, feed it, we hold!"
So I stepped into the ring and opened the channel and poured — careful, controlled, the trickle-and-a-half I'd learned to hold at Sunk Hollow, feeling the Aura begin its climb, watching that bar in the corner of my eye, 40%, 45%, the King stirring at the edge of me like a sleeper turning over —
— and through the open channel, through the door that a feed always cracked between me and the deep, something looked back.
Not a beast. Not the pushing, herding will that was moving the creatures. Something behind that, vaster and older and utterly still, a presence sunk so far down in the deep wilds that it made the whole country of teeth feel like its front yard. It felt the ward brighten. It felt the King pouring himself into the stone. And it turned its attention up the channel, along the thread of my own aura, and it found me — and I felt it recognize me, the way the wards recognized me, the way the stag had knelt, a bone-deep ah, there you are.
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
I froze in the ring, the pour stuttering, every hair on my body standing up.
It didn't speak. It didn't have a mouth, or a language, or a need for either. But it pressed an impression up the channel and into me, wordless and enormous and warm in the worst possible way — the warmth of something that had waited a very long time and was pleased. Not enemy. Not prey. Something closer to —
Kin.Home. You came back.
"ADRIAN." Vera's voice, sharp, from very far away — I'd stopped feeding, the ward was guttering, a big deep-wilds thing was through the crack. I slammed the channel shut, wrenched myself out of that vast pleased attention, and the impression tore loose with a sensation like a hook coming out of skin.
I finished the feed on shaking legs. We sealed the breach. We won. And I stood in the ring after, cold to my bones, while my friends caught their breath around me.
"It knows me," I said. My voice didn't sound like mine. "There's — Yrsa, there's something down there, under the deep wilds, under all of it. Not the thing pushing the creatures — something below that. And when I feed a ward, it can see me. And it's glad. It thinks I—" I couldn't finish it. "It called me kin. It thinks I came home."
Yrsa had gone still and grey. "The old texts have a name for the thing the wards were built to hold," she said quietly. "Not the deep wilds. The wilds are just the country. The thing in the country. The thing the first King went down to face, and came back up changed, and spent the rest of his life walling away." Her wolf-thing pressed against her leg. "They never wrote what it was. Only that the King knew it. Only that, at the end, the part of him that drowned—" she looked at me, and did not say the rest.
The part of him that drowned wanted to go back to it. She didn't have to say it. The vise had just grown a second jaw, and I felt it close.
[Warden's contract: ward restored against directed breach.][+140 EXP. Rank D: progress 14%.][Anomaly: a presence in the deep is aware of you. Channel exposure: two-way.]Every feed opened a door. And now I knew something was standing on the other side of it, glad to see me, calling me home. And I could not hold the line without opening the door.
Great. Great, great, great.
