THE PATHFINDER: Chronicles Of Starlight

Chapter 28: Cracks in the Foundation

Chapter Twenty-Eight: Cracks in the Foundation

It started small enough that most of Thornwick dismissed it entirely — a tremor at dawn, faint enough to rattle crockery rather than topple it, the kind of thing a city built on old ground simply learned to shrug off after enough uneventful decades.

Kael felt it differently. He woke from the first true sleep he'd managed in days with his whole body humming, some deep instinctive alarm ringing through him before his conscious mind had even finished catching up.

That came from beneath Corrigan's district, Starlight said, already fully alert despite the hour. Not an earthquake, not natural settling. The resonance I've been monitoring just spiked, hard, and then settled back to a baseline considerably higher than it held even yesterday. Whatever is waking down there, novice, it is no longer waking slowly.

Bren was awake within moments, alarmed by his son's sudden tension, and the two of them stood in the grey pre-dawn light listening to the city's ordinary noise resume around them — a dog barking, someone laughing off the tremor two streets over, life continuing entirely unaware of what had actually happened.

"How bad," Bren asked, low.

"I don't know yet," Kael admitted. "But it's not stopping."

By midday, the Guild hall's usual brisk order had curdled into something closer to controlled alarm. Kael arrived for his ordinary training-yard session to find Coale and a dozen other instructors clustered near the administrative wing, voices pitched low but urgent, and it was Wren, catching him at the yard's edge, who filled in what official channels weren't yet saying openly.

"Three more tremors since dawn," Wren said, quiet and unusually serious. "All centered on the lower districts — Corrigan's territory, more or less. Guild engineers went out to inspect old foundation lines an hour ago and came back saying half their instruments failed within a hundred yards of some specific spot near the Baron's hall." A humorless, nervous laugh. "Sound familiar?"

It should sound familiar to us more than anyone else in this city, Starlight said grimly, as Kael's stomach dropped. The same equipment failure Penn described from forty years of failed survey attempts. Whatever's stirring beneath that seal is beginning to bleed its influence outward, strong enough now to disrupt instruments at a hundred yards rather than the tighter radius it's apparently held for centuries.

Petren arrived moments later, his usually calm face drawn tight. "My cousin serves in Corrigan's household guard," he said, low enough that only Kael and Wren could hear. "Sent word this morning — the Baron's called in every wielder he's got on retainer, Reven Ashcroft included, and sealed off two full streets around his own hall. Officially it's precaution against structural danger from the tremors. Unofficially—" He hesitated, glancing at Kael with something that had shifted, in the last weeks, from wary distance into genuine trust. "Unofficially, my cousin says the Baron's been shouting at his own engineers since dawn about something moving that shouldn't be moving. Whatever that means."

It means Corrigan felt this too, Starlight said. Or his own investigators did, and reported it plainly enough that even a man used to careful patience is now reacting with open urgency. This is no longer a quiet contest between interested parties, novice. This is becoming a crisis the whole city will eventually notice, whether Corrigan wants it contained or not.

Director Halloway convened an emergency board session that afternoon, and this time, unlike the earlier hearing about the Hollow's beast pattern, there was no pretense of measured deliberation at all — simply a tense, rapid accounting of every strange report the last twelve hours had produced, delivered to a room considerably more crowded than Kael remembered from his last visit.

"Structural engineers confirm the tremors originate from an unmapped substructure beneath the lower district," Halloway said, grim, addressing the assembled instructors and senior Guild members packed into the chamber. "Historical records suggest this substructure has existed, sealed and inert, since before the city's founding. Until this morning, it has never once shown measurable activity in four hundred years of recorded history." Her sharp eyes swept the room. "As of six hours ago, that is no longer true. I want every available instructor and Level 4 wielder or higher on standby by nightfall. I do not yet know what we're preparing for. I intend for us to be ready regardless."

Kael sat near the chamber's back with Coale's group, feeling Councilman Vell's eyes find him across the crowded room — sharp, calculating, and, for the first time since Kael had met him, unmistakably afraid.

He knows precisely what's down there, Starlight murmured. Or knows enough to be genuinely frightened rather than merely curious. Watch him carefully, novice. A frightened man loyal to a Baron under this much sudden pressure may make choices considerably less careful than the ones he's made so far.

The session broke without resolution, Halloway dispatching runners to gather more instruments, more instructors, more information from a structure that had spent five hundred years refusing to give any of it up easily — and Kael walked out into Thornwick's tense evening air carrying a certainty that had settled, cold and absolute, somewhere beneath his ribs since the moment he'd first felt that dawn tremor.

Whatever slept beneath Corrigan's district was not going to stay contained much longer.

And when it woke fully, Kael understood, with a clarity that frightened him more than any beast pack ever had, there would be no way left to keep his own part in all of this quiet any further.
