the magical girls of war: Obsessive Tendencies

Chapter 2: The Pecking Order

They followed their hyperactive guide down a sprawling, gleaming hallway toward a massive reception desk where another magical girl was stationed.

This girl, however, looked like the complete and total opposite of their coffee-fueled escort. Her shoulders slumped, her eyes were dead, and her posture practically radiated the energy of someone who had burned through every single reserve of her life force years ago and was only clocking in because she desperately needed the paycheck.

Before they could even reach the desk, a rival magical girl group stepped out from a side corridor, intentionally cutting off their path.

The leader of the group—a girl radiating an intense aura of aristocratic arrogance—stopped and smirked down at them. "I think you're entirely lost, little boy. The Knights of Light are stationed on the completely opposite side of this hub."

Tony blinked, entirely unfazed, and tilted his head. "Knight Lights?"

Right beside him, Maya let out a sudden, violent pffftt! She burst into an uncontrolled fit of laughter, pointing a finger at him. "Tony!! You absolute menace!"

Tony raised an eyebrow, genuinely confused. "What? Isn't that literally what she just said?"

The rival girl’s smirk instantly vanished. Her posture stiffened, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "You are obviously brand new to the system, so... it seems I need to personally teach you some manners. I challenge you to an official magi-fight."

The moment the words left her mouth, the entire corporate lobby warped violently.

The pristine floor rapidly expanded, stretching into a massive, arena-style battlefield, separating Tony and the arrogant girl onto opposite sides of the room. The rest of Team 7-A was instantly shifted backward, finding themselves suddenly dropped into rows of spectator stadium seating, left completely disoriented.

The hyperactive representative clasped her hands to her cheeks in a total panic. "Oh dear!! She's absolutely going to tear him to pieces! Celeste really loves making sure every single newcomer understands the Syndicate's pecking order right away!"

Miss Marcy glared at her, her protective teacher instincts flaring up instantly. "This is... this is literal bullying!?"

The representative immediately waved her hands frantically, sweat pouring down her face. "Please, ma'am, corporate guidelines strictly state we do not condone such behavior! This is more like... an impromptu mock battle!"

Suki looked past her, her gaze locked tightly on the arena. "Tony is a complete beginner... So why allow this to proceed when she clearly possesses a massive advantage in experience?"

The representative’s smile stretched unnaturally wide, her eyes darting nervously toward the arena. "Because I am absolutely not going to be the one to tell her to stop. She would quite literally destroy me."

The girls of Team 7-A were stunned into a horrified silence.

Alice bit her lip, her eyes wide with worry as she stared down at Tony. "Come on, guys... we just have to... we have to make sure Tony knows we support him..."

But before she could even finish her sentence, Celeste—who had been wearing a pristine, stark white uniform—erupted in a flash of cosmic light, shifting flawlessly into her magical girl form. Her dress was ghostly, woven from a dark, ethereal fabric where entire miniature galaxies visibly swirled and spun within the layers. With a sharp hum of energy, her weapon materialized in her grip: a colossal, terrifying scythe.

The jaws of Team 7-A practically hit the stadium floor.

For his part, Tony’s stoic face cracked instantly, a look of pure terror taking over. "What the hell!!!?"

Celeste smirked at his reaction. She raised a single hand, the air around her visibly pushing back as if she were lifting an immense, invisible weight. As her fingers rose, a dozen hands burst out from the floor of the arena, bathed in deep red and corrupted purple shadows. Slowly, full figures pulled themselves out of the earth—shadowy, spectral forms of defeated magical girls and armored knights.

Tony’s face went entirely pale.

Celeste stood proudly behind her dark vanguard, her voice dripping with condescension. "Admit defeat now, boy."

But the intense psychological pressure was exactly the trigger Tony's subconscious needed. In a heartbeat, Pink aggressively took the reins. A violent, explosive swirl of hot pink magical energy erupted around his body, instantly replacing him with a cascade of frills, ribbons, and her signature Kawaii Hammer of Doom.

Pink smirked, resting the massive mallet carelessly over her shoulder. "Like hell I will!!"

A collective gasp echoed through the stands as whispers immediately rippled through the spectators.

"Is that... a girl!!?" one onlooker stammered.

"Wasn't he just a guy a second ago?! What in the world?!" another yelled.

"That's impossible!! He's a guy!?" a third shouted.

The corporate representative’s enthusiastic smile completely faded, her jaw dropping. "What in the name of sparkles...!!!?"

Celeste’s eyes went wide, her aristocratic composure breaking. "What... you're a complete freak!!!?" She shook her head, her face twisting in disgust. "Fine. I'll just have to beat you down and add you to my little collection..."

With a sharp thrust of her finger, her shadow minions bolted forward, sprinting straight across the arena toward Pink.

Instead of backing down, Pink just let out a chaotic, high-pitched giggle, her eyes flaring with a look of pure, unfiltered competitiveness. Above her head, her hammer rapidly expanded, swelling to a monstrous size. With a terrifying swing, she slammed it into the ground, a shockwave of pink energy completely pulverizing the incoming minions, turning them into nothing but harmless red and purple mist.

The entire arena went dead quiet.

Celeste’s eye twitched violently. "You... how did you...!?" She gritted her teeth, raising both hands. "It doesn't matter... You won't do that a second time!!"

Suddenly, the floor of the stadium ruptured completely. A massive wave of shadows tore out of the ground—more than there were actual people watching the fight. The sheer, overwhelming sea of dark figures completely swarmed the arena, surrounding Pink from every conceivable angle.

Beads of sweat began to form on Pink’s brow, but she kept her smirk firmly in place. "You... you really think this cheap trick can stop me?"

Celeste simply smiled back, cold and confident. "Oh, yes... I do. Because during that first wave, I wasn't even using their abilities."

Pink raised an eyebrow, her mouth opening to ask what that meant, when a massive ball of concentrated fire slammed directly into her back.

The force of the explosion almost knocked her off her feet. She spun around immediately, swinging her mallet in a wide arc to clear the space, but as she did, another shadow swooped in from her blind spot, hitting her squarely with an ice-infused fist.

This time, Pink hit the floor hard, but her competitive spite kept her moving. She swung her hammer from the ground, taking out the ice minion and three others along with it, but the gap closed instantly.

Celeste laughed, her voice echoing off the walls. "Time to teach you your place."

Pink’s face flushed red with absolute fury as she struggled to push herself up. "Yeah? Well, no!"

Celeste scoffed coldly, turning her back to the fight. "Beat her until she is physically unable to move."

The endless sea of shadows closed in, launching a relentless, synchronized assault on Pink from all angles. No matter how many she crushed with her hammer, three more immediately rushed forward to take their place. The numbers were endless.

In the stands, Alice gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Oh no!!"
